-- '......-.-119 SPARX 40 '------ SENIOR CLASS TRIP Last year's Seniors had a very interesting class trip. ' They first drove to New Salem, Illinois. It was in New Salem that Abra- ham Lincoln spent the most formative years of his 1ife.Here1s Work- ed in a country store and first studied law. He met Ann Rutledge, fell in love with hor, and mourned her death in New Salem. After Lincoln left, the county seat was established in Petersburg, and New Salem declined rapidly. The buildings were torn down and removed to Petersburg. Soon nothing remained but a windswept hill overlooking the Sangamon river. William Randolph Hearst became interested in having New Salem rebuilt, and so now after 100 years, the village lives again for the public to soo. Cabins have been rebuilt andfbr- nishcd as they were in 1830, The Lincoln-Berry Store looks very much as it did when Lincoln told his entertaining stories to hisadr mirers around thc fireplace. The Rutledge tavern is the largest building in the rebuilt village. There is one original building, the cooper shop, it was moved to Petersburg and then again moved to New Salem. The village is now a part of a park of about 225 acres, known as the New Salem Park. Everyone enjoyed seeing this little historic town even though it rained and the picnic dinner had to be eaten inside. From New Salem they proceeded to Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln's home and tomb are located there, the home has been preserved as it was then. In this home is the room where Lincoln was notified of his election to the presidency. The class went through his tomb and saw thepiaoe where he and certain other members of the family are buried. While in Springfield, they also went through the State Capital. 'It was a very interesting trip though a long drive for one day. We Seniors of 1940 also expect to enjoy our class trip very much. We plan to take a threeihour excursion boat-ride down the Mississippi, Through the locks twice. A picnic dinner will be one of the big items. The arsenal and other points of interest willpub- bably be visited.
