'--....---.:-...1.9 SPARX 4Q::'..i -'- NORMAL TRAINING Brighton is one of the two remaining' places in the county where Normal Training instruction can be obtained by High School students. Those who complete the Normal Training course, includ- ing the Normal Training examinations, are given certificates and do not have to attend summer school or take the regular teachers' tests to teach in rural schools. With one year of experience, they may take the tests for their first grade certificates and teach in a rural standard school. hr. hchfee, who has been the Brighton Normal Training instructor for eight years, is well prepared for this work with a major in Education and experience as a rural tea- cher as well as a high school teacher. This year seven students will complete the course and the three who are old enough to teach have already secured schools. COMMERCIAL Brighton's Commercial Course is thorough, complete, and has the further advantage of much individual instruction. A special typevriting room has been provided which is equipped vith eleven standard Underwood and Remington typewriters. These are replaced by new machines every three years. Typevriting is a fascinating subject and attracts many first year students, the best of whom continue with advanced typing. Although typing is beneficial to everyone who takes it, bookkeeping, shorthand, and business train- ing are also essential for a complete business course. Brighton offers all of these under the supervision of Miss Rossing a very competent full time commercial instructor. This year the novice typevriting team placed first in the dis- trict contest at Ottumwa, while Mildred Helmick ranked third in in- dividual speedy other members of the team were Ray Leppert and David Wentworth. 'The novice shorthand team, consisting of Ray Leppert, Mildred Horner, and Patricia Edwards, ranked second while Patricia won third individual honors. Both teams later took part in the state contest at Deo Moines,
