Dur- ing our four years in high school, some pupils have been lost, and some have been gainedg our enrollment now stands at 17. At the gruesome ,Freshman initiation, the lofty upperclaosmen vainly tried to humble us, but their efforts were useless, for we emerged more determined than ever to make our high school days suc- cessful ones. Q And our determination was realized as a fact during our four years. In our first year, we entered whole-heartedly into declamatory, athletics, and music. Our ability to nburn the mid- night oiln was proved by Bill Kraemer, who ranked first in the state in the Science Academic Test in 1935. During our Sophomore year, our athletic boys were awarded foot- ball and basketball letters. lusic and declamatory also attracted many of our number this year. The girls were not to be outdone by the boys in athletic ability, so in our Junior year, our girls basketball team came through with flying colors to defeat the Senior girls, and vin the 1939 girls basketball chmfipionship. - Our Junior Play, nLook Uho's Heren, e hilarious comedy, was definitely enjoyed by the audience. ' Junior-Senior Banquet. And a lovely banquet it was! All the grace and dignity of our colonial ancestors seemed to be present that night at our Colonial Banquet. A There is an old saying that the Senior is the most dignified creature imaginable. Perhaps so, but we did not let this dignity interfere with the good times we enjoyed this year. Sometimes our times were so good that a list of names greatly increased the list on the detention book. 'But of course this time to make up merely gave us some time for much needed study. Several members of our class are interested in teaching as a vocation, and our Normal Training class numbers seven. During our Junior and Senior years, we have completed the course outlined. This year each student has had one week's practice teaching in a rural school. This teaching experience will prove valuable to all the students, especially Elsie Stout and Betty Jo Leppert, who are going to teach in rural schools next year. This yeargthe musical organizations entered more events in the contests than ever before, with the Seniors contributing their talents. Many of these entries won the privilege of going to the State contest, and our class is justly proud of Jeanne Hoskins, who is going to the National contest to sing her Soprano solo. We are also proud of John Chuck who made a very good showing in basketball this year. John was a member of the Ke-Wash and All Sectional basketball teams. Richard Arnold was also a member of the Ke-Wash basketball team, and a second team member of the Ke-Wash football team. Again this year, the girls won the class Basketball championship, led by their star forward, Isabelle Pacha, Isabelle was also elected Football Pep Queen and was crowned at our Homecom- ing game with Richland. Several of our girls were members of a new- ly formed organization, the Pep Club, and Mildred Horner, a member, was also one of our cheer leaders. Three members of the one-act contest play, 0TriflesU,were from our class. We also presented a three-act play, WSunny Days Farmn, which was surrounded by mystery and suspense,. and greatly enjoyed by all who BEM it. In the com ercial department, John Chuck entered the amateur typing contest, and placed third. Mildred Horner and Patricia Edwards were able to transform words into little symbols known as shorthand with enough speed to become members of the shorthand contest team. We Seniors will always remember the pleasant days we spent at Brighton High schbol, and we hope we have loft something of value by our brief stay here. lW19 SPARX 4-Of JEANNE HOSKINS Jeannie Normal Training Course Soprano Solo 1, 3, 43 Glee Club 3, 43 Band 1, 2, Sextet 3, 4, Mixed Quartet 3, 45 Asst. Those who complete the Normal Training course, includ- ing the Normal Training examinations, are given certificates and do not have to attend summer school or take the regular teachers' tests to teach in rural schools. With one year of experience, they may take the tests for their first grade certificates and teach in a rural standard school. hr. hchfee, who has been the Brighton Normal Training instructor for eight years, is well prepared for this work with a major in Education and experience as a rural tea- cher as well as a high school teacher. This year seven students will complete the course and the three who are old enough to teach have already secured schools. COMMERCIAL Brighton's Commercial Course is thorough, complete, and has the further advantage of much individual instruction. A special typevriting room has been provided which is equipped vith eleven standard Underwood and Remington typewriters. These are replaced by new machines every three years. Typevriting is a fascinating subject and attracts many first year students, the best of whom continue with advanced typing. Although typing is beneficial to everyone who takes it, bookkeeping, shorthand, and business train- ing are also essential for a complete business course. Brighton offers all of these under the supervision of Miss Rossing a very competent full time commercial instructor. This year the novice typevriting team placed first in the dis- trict contest at Ottumwa, while Mildred Helmick ranked third in in- dividual speedy other members of the team were Ray Leppert and David Wentworth. 'The novice shorthand team, consisting of Ray Leppert, Mildred Horner, and Patricia Edwards, ranked second while Patricia won third individual honors. ' They first drove to New Salem, Illinois. It was in New Salem that Abra- ham Lincoln spent the most formative years of his 1ife.Here1s Work- ed in a country store and first studied law. He met Ann Rutledge, fell in love with hor, and mourned her death in New Salem. After Lincoln left, the county seat was established in Petersburg, and New Salem declined rapidly. The buildings were torn down and removed to Petersburg. Soon nothing remained but a windswept hill overlooking the Sangamon river. William Randolph Hearst became interested in having New Salem rebuilt, and so now after 100 years, the village lives again for the public to soo. Cabins have been rebuilt andfbr- nishcd as they were in 1830, The Lincoln-Berry Store looks very much as it did when Lincoln told his entertaining stories to hisadr mirers around thc fireplace. The Rutledge tavern is the largest building in the rebuilt village. There is one original building, the cooper shop, it was moved to Petersburg and then again moved to New Salem. The village is now a part of a park of about 225 acres, known as the New Salem Park. Everyone enjoyed seeing this little historic town even though it rained and the picnic dinner had to be eaten inside. From New Salem they proceeded to Springfield, Illinois. Lincoln's home and tomb are located there, the home has been preserved as it was then. In this home is the room where Lincoln was notified of his election to the presidency. The class went through his tomb and saw thepiaoe where he and certain other members of the family are buried. While in Springfield, they also went through the State Capital. 'It was a very interesting trip though a long drive for one day. We Seniors of 1940 also expect to enjoy our class trip very much. We plan to take a threeihour excursion boat-ride down the Mississippi, Through the locks twice. A picnic dinner will be one of the big items. The arsenal and other points of interest willpub- bably be visited. ,Smear up-------..........,ee e ACADEMIC CONTEST For a number of years, the Brighton Hiah School has annually competed in the Iona NEverypupilNacademic contest held each spring The restlts of xhese contests have given the schoolaveryenviable record and indicate that the classroom instruction of the school is on an extremely high level. In 1939, the school average was seventh of eighty eight class O schoolsg and the Biology class, taught by Mrr L. E. They also were runnerups in the County and Sectional Tournaments. In the County Tournament, which was held at Wellman, the Bears fhumped Crawfordsville, 53-39, and then tripped Riverside 30-24. They lost to Wellman in the final, by a score of 44-25. In the Sectional Tournament, which was held at Fairfield, fha Brighton boys over- powered Farmington 36-l9. In the second round they put Birmingham out of the running with a 43-27 score, but were eliminated in the final by Packwood 43-32, The Ke-Wash Conference was exceptionally strong this year with Wellman and Kalona having very fine teams. It is interesting to note that three Ke-Wash teams, Wellman, Kalena, and Brighton all played in the finals of their respective sectional tournaments. It is also interesting to note that Brighton was defeated only once out of the Ke-Wash, and that defeat was by Packwood in the finals of the Sectional. .1...-4-Q1-in-n-no-0 -v-asia-ruuux 1 9' S P lk R. The new policy by which the merchants pay the band as a group, rather'than the indivi- dua1s,for summer concerts is making it possible to buy two or three high quality instruments per year. , This year the band made its best showing in the district music contest receiving a II ratingg moreover, Richard Day received a I rating on his scueaphone so1o,and the brass quartet received a sim- ilar rating. Richard later achieved a II rating in the state con- test at Fairfield. The present band is a very young organization. There are only a very few seniors on its personnelg and approximately ten of its thirty seven members are still enrolled in grade school. Mr. Joseph Christy, director, has been working with the present band only about two yearsg and will have two or more years with most of the group. VOCAL AND PIANO Brighton has one of the strongest vocal and piano departments of any school in this sectiong and the director, Miss Virginia Mar- solf, has raised this department to a very high plane. Outstanding achievements were the ranking of Betty Jeanne Hos- kins as I in soprano solo, in the state music contest at Fairfieldg and the similar ranking of Ray Leppert in piano in the sanmscontest. In addition the girls' glee club, girls' sextct, and the following soloists received II rankings in the state contest: Richard Arnold, tenor, and Ruth Reighard, contralto. In addition to the above, Wanda Smith mezzo-soprano, and the boys' glee club ranked I in the district contest. The boys' glee club was a new .organization this year and its showing was surprising since it is not usually possible to produce a district winner inane year. The boys are learning to enjoy singing, and should be a strong group in another year. The vocal music program at Brighton now begins in the pre- primary and continues through the twelfth gradeg Mies Marzolf has charge of all vocal music above the first grade. As a result the children -are learning the fundamentals of music and to sing at an early age. From all indications, there is a wealth of musical talent in the grade school, and the vocal department should continue toim- prove from year to year. are 19 Sigh-BX.. .4O1feee SENIOR BAND Back Row: E.
