Brighton Bearcats FRONT: R. Gaboriault, M. Dufour, E. Lefebvre, T. Miller, P. Kane, BACK: W. Hawkins, Mgr., T. Henry, Mgr., S. Webster, B. Miller, E. Ovitt, D. Foy, W, Moore, Mr. R. Willard, Coach. As the basketball season comes to a close, the Bearcats can look back with a smile knowing that they showed the people in Island Pond and surrounding areas that Brighton has had a basketball team of which it can be proud. The won-lost record, after the 18-game schedule, stood at 13-5 as the Cats won 8 games in a row. In the final N.E.C. Tourney, the Cats fell to Canaan by 8 points but came back to whip Barton by 20. In the Class S play-offs. Brighton came through with flying colors defeating Wells River by 9 points to win a chance at the Eastern Division Championship. As a member of the team I can say that the boys played together very well and showed a lot of spirit, as well as sportsmanship. Earl Lefebvre came in as the leading scorer of our team with an average of 18 points. Raymond Gaboriault and myself, Ted Miller, came in with 15 points for an average. The Cats owe a lot of gratitude and appreciation to our coach, Mr. Rod Willard, who helped the team all the way. Without his help, we all know we couldn't have done what we did. Brighton Bearkittens FRONT: L. Leavens, D. Dailey, M. Blake, L. Testut, D. Wallace, J. Goulet, L. Noble, G. Barnes, S. Wing, B. Goupee. BACK: B. Worth, Mgr., Mr. R. Willard, Coach. i The girl's basketball team has had a fairly good season this year. We lost to Canaan at the be ginning of the season but then came back for nine straight wins. Our greatest victory was January 31, when we defeated Canaan by one point with a score of 26 to 25. That night we were out to get them and played one of our best games. All of the girls were hustling, which surprised Mr. Willard. Jackie's rebounding and great defensive work helped us out tremendously. After defeating Canaan, we had two away games left, which were with Craftsbury and Newport Center. We beat Craftsbury, but Newport Center was another story with a score of 35 to 31 in their favor. The Cheerleaders and townspeople have been a great morale booster at our games this year. We really felt like playing ball when they were all cheering for us. I'm sure all the girls agree that we could not possibly have done as well as we did without the instruction and guidance of our coach, Mr. Rod Willard.
