Q9111' fllrthuies miss 413121111 4 ilflruntpsuu The sudden death on May 19 1948 of M1ss Mary E Thompson our beloved Bookkeepmg teacher was a severe blow as well as a great loss to the puprls and faculty of Bnghton Hxgh School Mrss Thompson was a dependable and conscrentlous teacher who made her pupils enyoy Bookkeeprng wh1le learmng 1ts complexrtres Her s was the task of tramrng commercral sophomores m hab1ts of accuracy honesty and neatness Th1s she accomphshed w1th consrderable ease for her natural tact and pauence plus a srncere sympathy developed respect and cooperatron Whrle her loss to us has been great to her farruly rt has been rrreparable In thrs modern world there are few daughters so happrly devoted to therr homes and mothers Today there are few who are more deeply relrgrous and who carry that rehgxon over to theu every act Of her rt can be truly saxd that she spoke rll of no one She was the happy possessor of a pleasmg manner a generous heart and a wrlhng hand The goodness and beauty of her lrfe have enhanced the teachmg pro fessron 'ILHIBS fhertruhe A ilunr After more than thrrty years of farthful loyal servrce Mrss Gertrude A Poor ret1red from the faculty of Brrghton Hrgh School on September 30 1948 When she started as an rnstructor of physical educatxon rt was the pr1v11ege of every grrl who entered Brrghton Hrgh School to come under her dxrectron And truly 1t was a pr1v1lege to be gu1ded by one so fundamentally farr mrnded wrth such warm human sympathy and qulet understandmg Dunng th1s penod of her career she organrzed the grrl s councrl the forerunner of our present Student Councxl and make of 1t a v1tal part of the school lrfe--and many a former councrl member must look back wrth pnde to the contnbutron of th1s organ 1zat1on to the proper functronrng of the school Upon the transfer of the school from the present Taft Burldmg to the Castle on the H111 she 1t was who drew the plans for our xmpresswe Class Day exercrses whrch grve such a splended opportunlty to show our spectacular settmg These exerc1ses w1ll cont1nue to be a frttrng tnbute to her In 1941 Mrss Poor a proneer 1n the field of Health Educatron transferred from the gymnasrum to the classroom when she rntroduced to the Bnghton Hrgh School the hrst course ln Health Educat1on 1n the Boston Publrc Schools Thrs transfer to the classroom necessar1lly but unfortunately decreased the number of grrls to come w1th1n her sphere of lnfluence-but rn no way was Mlss Poors zeal drmmrshed as she contrnued to teach her grrls to accept wrllrngly therr respons1b1ht1es rn an adult world God grant that Bnghton Hrgh School may be blessed w1th many more teachers who w1ll follow rn her footsteps exemng the same qulet rnfluence for good--and may God grant to Mrss Poor many years of happy healthy lrfe rn her Cape Cod home illlrss fhlrrv 4111 urleg The resrgnatron of Mrss Alxce Hurley hlled the hearts of her puprls wrth mrngled emotions of joy and sorrow Glad were they to thrnk of her as enyoyrng a happy marned 1116 but sorry to realxze that no longer would they have the pnvrlege of attendlng her classes A member of the Commercral Department smce 1938 Mrss Hurley brought to her classes a thorough knowledge of the commercral branches as well as a keen rnsrght xnto the drfflcultles and problems of youth Her enthusrastxc eagerness to help her pup11s and her gracrous fnendly manner made her loved and respected by all who knew her It rs the fond hope of both teachers and puprls that Mrs Ioseph Reardon as Mxss Hurley rs now known w1ll enyoy rn her new lrfe the happmess that she so nchly deserves o . yn -v Av ,sr 'QQ - v 'S' ., Y 1 1 1 . , 1 . . . . . . .. , 1 1 ' 1 1 . 1 . - 1 v 1 , . . ,sv .1 1 1 - , . 1 ' 1 . . , . 1 1 1 . . 11 . 11 . . . 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 . 1 . . . . . 1 1 'o 4 . y ,-v fu Q 1 1 1 1 - 1 1
