Ma Sul P ANI APPRECIATION iWrrtten by Mrss Marlon A Hawes Former Head of Forergn Languages Departmentl When Srdney Peterson came to Brrghton Hrgh School rn 1901 he found a school of about two hundred and fifty puprls raprdly growrng rr numbers and rmportance under the leadershrp of Mr Frederrc Allrson Tupper rts Headmaster The new comer was greeted wrth a specral welcome by the lrttle corps of teachers who for years had been enjoyrng the wrse counsel and drrectron of hrs father Mr Ellrs Peterson Supervrsor and later Assrstant Superrntendent of the Bostor schools Mr Peterson came to hrs new dutres wrth an excellent preparatron havrng been graduated from the Boston Latrn School and Harvard College havrng taken. graduate courses at the Worcester Polytechnrc and at the Massachusetts Instrtue of Technology and havrng taught rn the Worcester Classrcal and rn the Newton Hrgh School Almost rmmedrately hrs hrgh scholarshrp and attractrve personalrty garned hrm a place rn the regard of teachers and scholars whrch trme has only made more secure -in athlete hrmself he was harled by the boys as therr leader and for several years he coached the track hockey and basketball teams and had charge of all the outsrde actrvrtres of the school On the great days of the competrtlve mrlrtary drrlls rn Mechanrcs Burldrng he went and returned wrth the Companres from Brrghton It was he who superrntended the hangrng of the beautrful orar. e and black banner who saw to rt that every cadet recerved the flowers and candy thrown to hrm by hrs frrends rn the audrence and who Jorned rn the trrumphal homeward march of hrs vrctorrous Companres proudly bearrng the flags whrch they had won All these actrvrtres however engrossrrw were only srde actrvrtres and were qurte subsrdrary to the real work of teachrng to whrch he devoted himself heart and soul The Scrence Department of our School under hrs headshrp yrelded to none rn the crty The record of hrs studres and achrevements rs a notable one He has taken graduate courses rn Scrence Educatron Psychology Musrc German and French at Harvard College and Boston Unrversrty At Bates College he took specral courses rn Educatron. Poetry and French He has travelled extensrvely havrng vrsrted Europe seven trmes, once for a stay of fourteen months durrng whrch he vrsrted Swrtzerland Italy Ger many Holland France and England He studred French at the Lnrversrty of Grenoble and at the Lnrversrty of Parrs he took courses rn Chemrstry and Zoology and had the unusual advantage of studyrng Radro actrvrty wrth Madame Curle Many a college presrdent has had no better equrpment and we may well be thankful that 'VIr Peterson had chosen to devote hrs unusual talents and acqurrements to the boys and grrls of Brrghton Hrgh School Mr Petersons hobby rs the Great Outdoors wrth rts rncrdental gardenrng wrnter sports and canoerng How often have we seen hrm Joyfully departrng for hrs vacatron rn the country but ever then not wholly free from cares of school for rn hrs surtcase was always the materral for the hrgh school program which he has made out for many years a masterprece of patrent rngenrous labor a mrghty maze transformed rnto a perfect plan No one can estrmate the value of hrs personal rnfluence Hrs unfarlrng courtesy hrs gerarrne krndness and readrness to grve help wherever needed hrs adherence to the loftrest standards of truth and honor are combrned wrth a keen sense of humor and a very human sympathy wrth the Joys and sorrows of hrs puprls In these days called by Henry Dwrght Sedgwrck the days of the vanrshrng gentleman he strll rllustrates Chaucers rdeal a veray parfrt gentrl Kmght 11 O o ' 1 9 . . . . bl . . , .
