MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT The Mathematics Department offers courses ranging in dilliculty from eighth grade mathematics to college calculus. This year the department has offered advanced programs at all levels. Looking toward the future, Miss Hondelink. the department head. says. In the next dec- ade the high school mathematics program will undergo radical changes. In anticipation of this. a new mathe- matics othce and a new mathematics laboratory have been added to the available facilities. 8 The Brighton chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, an honor- ary mathematics society, was active again this year. A class average of B + and an interest in math indicated by a composition are the quali- fications for membership. Qualified sophomores enter as associate members and at the end of their junior year become full members. These criteria enable the group to carry on its activities with a high level of participation. In 1959-60 the club took a trip to Kodak and heard a variety of guest speakers. MATHEMATICS CLUBS 'Q ,ff tdfdfa fig? '5T1f?4Z ffwfc . feczvzf 4-ZZ V .M UML? ,?,14i Lf? It maintains its own ham station: call letters KZKHB. Members conduct a training program in radio theory and Morse Code for newcomers to the field. Upon completion of this course trainees take an exam given by the Federal Communications Commis- sion for prospective amateur radio operators. SCIENCE CLUBS Stundingt Kingsley. D, Peet. D. Disney. K. In English classes students are introduced to a wealth of great litera- ture and gain in both appreciation and tech i l skills. Miss Margaret Young, absent when the depart- ment picture tabovel was taken, discusses a book with her eighth grade group. From eighth to twelfth grade, there is an increased stress on creative use of the rudiments that have been studied: spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and research methods. Seniors are in a rotating program or an advanced place- ment class. e l 2 ., -.,- .'4 , I - A ' ,f'. I . . fy ML- -E-f . ' :', '-7. .. A-.4:f.,.-vi. ,'-A pdl. I- I I 'I ,ff I, Mgr! I. The design for learning of a foreign language begins in the fourth grade where pupils are introduced to either French or Spanish. ln the High School four years of French. four of Spanish, three of Latin and two of Ger- man are offered. Newness was the keynote of the Lan- guage Department this year with four new teachers as well as three new language labs, in which students listen to tapes and records over individual headsets in order to 20 improve their pronunciation. In language classes the aim is not only for verbal and written proficiency, but also for an understanding of the people, culture, history and geography of foreign countries. As an ideal way to ac- complish this understanding, fortunate students of Span- ish again took part this year in an exchange program with Mexican students. 15 . kh qllll W Comprendesq lpe recordmvs have become an es sentml part of modern language teachmg ix' X But resc lrch m the llbrary note takmg m class and llstemng to lectures necessary 'If' 4 Uh huh l though! so' TGIF 6? if are stnll -Af ,...1 N 4 0 Q XY ' 5. 1: 1 ' Q -L v ' 1 1 ' M - ' 1 Q K , H, ' ff . The creativity which is inherent in a design for leaming is inspired and cultivated in art classes at all grade levels. In addition to a required one semester course in the eighth grade, the Art Department offers students more advanced instruction in the history, theory, and technique of ceramics, sculpture, and the graphic arts. A sequence in art revolves around courses in Basic Art and Drawing and Painting. 26 .!, ' ' I Co-art editor Terry Michlin works on yearbook sketches. Far l.eft: Bradley Smith advises senior. Junior high students take a required general music course. If they so desire. they may play in the junior band or orchestra and sing in the choir. Senior high students have many chances to express themselves musically in the band. the orchestra and the many singing groups. Highlighting the year was the production of South Pacific, the joint effort of the music and the drama departments. A. Kanack V . A. Trung, 1. oghlii. NHS Chosen by the faculty for superior qualities of leader- ship, scholarship, character and service, the sixty-three members of National Honor Society this year instituted a student tutoring service. Under the guidance of Miss Allena Frisbee, they continued the baked goods sales to augment a scholarship fund. This year's members also created a scrapbook to follow and record the activities of Brighton High School students. In May new members were tapped from the Junior Class in the annual candle- light ceremony. They will usher at graduation. E FUTURE HOMEMAKERS Standing: Mrs. Getzler, P. Munshower, M. HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT An essential part of Brighton High School's de- sign for practicality, the Home Economics depart- ment prepares girls for the future responsibilities of homemaking. In the eighth grade a one semester re- quired course teaches the fundamentals of cooking, sewing, interior decorating, child-care, good grooming, and family relations. Senior high school girls may elect a three year sequence cul- minating in a regents com- prehensive examination. For Seniors the department also offers a Special Interests course in child-care and family relations. This year students put their acquired skills to good use making curtains for Miss Handel's oflice and enter- taining their mothers and members of the administra- tion at a smorgasbord. 62 lt X 1. PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT Forming an essential part of our daily lives, physical education aids in the molding of strong minds and bodies. A program of varied skills teaches the youth of Brighton a sense of discipline which goes beyond the bounds of athletic prowess and includes good sportsmanship and team spirit. This spirit, while plentiful in varsity sports, is also evident in the extensive intramural programs for boys and girls. In these extra-curricular activities the stu- dent finds ample opportunities to employ and further develop the skills leamed in gym classes. 70 Following close on the heels of soccer came basketball. A few minor rule changes were made for a smoother and easier game. Shera Banbury's Senior team was heading for a first place at the time of mid-year examinations. JJ RESUME UF GIRLS' SPURTS The intramural program at BHS has a high percent age of participation-one of the highest in the state. The program stresses sportsmanship, enjoyment and skill In the fall girls' soccer retumed to BHS. A little rusty at first about rules, the girls played to a close finish in the intramural program, but Mary Janetos's Senior team captured first place. . ig. tire.
