In the spring of 1959 the Brighton Dis- trict One School Board adopted a state- ment of philosophy. Included in this statement were ten objectives. We have chosen these objectives as the theme for the 1959 CROSSROADS. Each objective is artistically expressed in our ten divi- sion pages. In each section we show how the objective was accomplished at Brigh- ton High School in the school year 1958- 1959. And now we have done with this school, and must move on. 'We will try what we have been taught, we will think and do. fit is not Hnished now. fl' here are others to take our place, there always will be. 1 1 A Ob ectnva Objcctlve Objectna Qlucctne Objectnu Oblutlu Qbyfxtlx L OIUILLIINL Olmntlve 0I7jLLtlVC IABLE OF CONTENTS I I I V V V V I X Enghsh and Forelgn Lannua es Mathematncs and Suence Muslc Art and Drama PI15 s1caI Izduaatlon Hnetory DLINOCFHYIC Lum Thmkm and Rczmonm Sdf Cundancc Practlcal Arts Moral and Spmrual VaIues 5 ll 0 21 '79 '79 -I4 47 76 77 60 Sl JW 02 06 97 100 101 JS 109118 X k KN BOARD OF EDUCATION: Fred Painter, David A. To enter this national honorary society, a student must have completed the BHS journalism course, done outstanding work on the school paper or literary magazine, and been chosen by Sherman Selden and a committee of the faculty. Nine juniors and seniors received the honor in 1958-'59. Brighton's literary magazine, the Galaxy, is published once a year with material from the school's outstanding poets, essayists, short story writers and artists. Ellen Rosen and her staff, with the help of Sherman Selden and the English De- partment, select the suitable material. LIBRARY CLUB j Fenmore, treasurerg C. Shacter, sccretaryg M. The Math Department offers courses ranging in difficulty from Eighth Year Mathe- matics through Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Engineering Math. Stu- dents especially talented in mathematics may progress through advanced sections of Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Year Math to a college-level calculus course for seniors. This advanced placement course, when satisfactorily completed, gives the senior at BHS college credit. Next year it is planned to offer advanced placement courses in Biology, Chem- istry, and Physics if the registration for them warrants. These courses will be designed to be the equivalent of a first year college course in each of these areas, said Richard Savage, Science Department head at BHS. Many juniors, contem- plating Advanced Biology, took Chemistry this year, swelling classes to almost twice normal size and requiring the addition of Robert Moore to the department. The annual Science Fair was held again this year, and top winners were sent on to the Science Congress at Brockport. The greatly increased number of students this year who are interested and have the necessary B average in chemistry has caused the club to divide in half. Mem- bers of each Chemistry Club have pursued their scientific interests under the leadership of Harold Kruger and Robert Moore through a varied program, includ- ing trips, student demonstrations, and a speaker from Eastman Kodak. 24 I r 1 Eleven licensed members continued the operation of school amateur radio station KQKHB this year. KQKHB is located in room 306, and here the club also teaches radio skills in preparation for Federal Communications Commission licenses. To join Mu Alpha Theta, a student must have an 85 over-all average and a 92 average in mathematics. Sophomores and juniors may then take a special test in February or March, and those who pass are assigned a mathe- matical topic upon which to write. If this is successfully completed, sophomores become associate members, and, when juniors, become full members. Through the efforts of the officers and the advisors, Roger Van Buskirk and Antoinette Hondelink, the club this year toured Eastman Kodak and heard speakers from the University of Rochester and various industries. Upon entering an art class this year, one could have seen students sketching from live models or still-life, throwing on a potter's wheel, constructing three-dimen- sional design, or expressing themselves through Abstract, Non-objective, Cubist, and Social-comment compositions. These projects, plus the pursuit of experiments in fields of individual interest, were enjoyed by all grades at BHS, the more difficult and advanced curriculum being offered to upperclassmen who chose Basic Art or Drawing and Painting as electives. Mr. Smith and Miss Payne taught the funda- mentals of their course through lectures, art books, magazines and clippings, and examples of art , they measured their success by a final exam in each class and by the quality of each student's creative work. vi? af? if P 'ff' tin :La A 4 PML fm QJJQQ' ART CLUB Third row E Hersey C Wald Vogel L Merlnng l Blumenthal C Shacter R Ward prcsxdent V Hansen E Colle E Lxeblmg L Atkm R Allen 1 Clmxno C Lrsson S Yates Second rou B Bryant R Messenger D Katz sec retary C Valkenburg E Bless j Falk Txrst row M Sprllcr K Kramer S jack K Krug ,I Meteycr D Pellatt Art Club members expenmented m clay, oils, tempera, and charcoal at weekly meetmgs under the guldance of Rhoda Payne Hrghllghtmg the years program were Held trxps and guest speakers from the Art Gallery CRAFT CLASS Seniors C Valkenburgh and D Pcllatt contemplate art problems K I f 1 , X , . x- f X R V--V, K ,' X ff I K iff - J fy X I ,ff Ralf , X ' f ff, f, ff fff gf f f X 14 ,ff X f ff f 45 X QM cp A , 71, ., 5 qf ,f MM XXX 1 my ff! xx 5 '5'- 'xx N -wi ff W f L f A x Kqk ff XX X QQ ,Lf ,!fy!C 55 XA 1 V X X , X , K f if f 'I f X ff xy f 56X ff X x J AM f x X Z!! ! PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT: Carl Witzel, Herbert Carlberg, john Carbaugh Hours of physical training in the daily gym classes develop in the youth of BHS co-ordination, physical fitness and sportsmanship. Although the spotlight of publicity falls on the boys' varsity teams, an extensive intramural program gives to all interested students a chance to partake in competitive games. The annual fall Water Ballet is one of the highlights of the girls' program. Speedaway, basketball, volleyball and softball played in class and in after school pro- grams develop in the girls poise, team spirit and an appreciation of sports. During and after school, the Physical Education Department offers outlets for the energy and enthu- siasm of the student body. 46 RESUME OF FALL SPORTS FOOTBALL Improvmg enough by the season s end to capture three and t1e one of the last flve games the football team ended wnth a 3 4 1 record The year s fnrst game a 15 13 loss to Cormng Free Academy was a thrrller The Barons matched touch down for touchdown but lost on a Cormng safety Llntll the East Rochester game Baron luck drd not 1m prove Then a combmatlon of ram and determmatnon pulled out a 14 13 wm m the last three mmutes Newark handed Brlghton a 40 14 shellackmg but the Barons bounced back the next weekend to txe LeRoy then a flrst place contender m the seasons best game A wm over Webster brought the season to a close SOCCER The Brlghton pxtchmen complled a 2 9 3 record for the fall soccer season Hlghlrghtmg the season was a defeat of the cnty champlons the Occr dentals from West I-hgh School Prevlously the West I-hgh goalne had been unscored upon but the Barons proved too much for the champs and put across two goals to w1n the game 4 2 CROSS COUNTRY Toby Hull coached the Baron Harrners to an undefeated season beatmg a total of 27 teams The fleet footed Barons placed second at the Buffalo lI1Vlt3tlOl'l3l meet and fourth m the Hobart sec txonals In the fourth annual Brrghton lnvntatlonal Cross Country Meet the Barons bested a fxeld of 14 teams 47 1 1. The season was marked by close contests , the East Rochester overtime win being one of the more spectacular come-from-behind victories. In all, the Barons put together a 13 won, 5 lost record for the season. SWIMMING: Four successive years and 70 meets later, the Baron Finmen were still undefeated. Coach Bernie McNamara's boys swam to victory against both city and county schools, setting pool records wherever they went. But the ineligibility rules and a strong Franklin team combined to defeat the Barons in their last meet. In the sectionals two days later, McNamara's boys captured second place. A four point victory over Brockport, breaking Brockport's 27 game win-streak, followed by a defeat of East Roch- ester in a close overtime contest, put the Barons in a tie for second place. The combination of Jensen, Cooze, Burgess, and Reynolds won games in regular competition. jensen's jump shot from the foul line averaged him 16.1 points a game and a berth on the All'County AA team. Dave Burgess, a second team All-County choice, along with play-maker Craig Reynolds, also provided a scoring threat. jerry Cooze's rebounding, backed by Drummer Hastings' and Bruce Corbett's floorwork, kept the hardwood boys among the leaders until the season's end, when a one-point loss to Webster, followed four days later by a loss to Brockport, dropped the Barons into third place. v I4, ii -i s ,..-1-' J.V.
