We therefore chose to show the reader our school as the evaluators saw it. Many of the after-school activities in Brighton are really an extension of the classroom work. Thus we have grouped these voluntary academic activities with the department that sponsors them. We have also separated the student-administra- tion groups from the purely social groups, and finally we have printed in italics a brief comment about each department made by the evaluators 'in their forty-six page report. This repo is available to the readeylxpon request to Legmnpffffi. Smith, principal. L l , H V' A ' v- 5 -Aff if vf I7 4, J f 1 ! l g ,f fd L, - . f . ' I X S 1958 HISTORY OF BRIGHTON HIGH SCHOOL In 1928, Brighton High School consisted of twenty ninth and tenth grade pupils who met in the grade school building. The school became a fully ac- credited high school in l93l with an enrollment of sixty-four pupils. Expanding enrollment saw two extensions to the elementary building in 1930 and 1934. The present high school building, erected in 1940, and the new wing. added in l952, accommo- dates grades seven through twelve. The continually rising pupil population will necessitate the conver- sion of the high school building into a senior high school containing only grades nine through twelve. Execution of this plan is scheduled for 1959. .Very 'xl . 4 C . -I' -' CFM' ' .1 .I . Il 4-1, K hm 'V .X ri H A 4 . ' I - X 'il j. , ' ll V . Classes in French, Spanish, and German are scheduled for at least two periods a week in the sound-equipped language laboratories. The use of a tape recorder and recorded lessons facilitates the student's leaming of pronunciation. Modem lan- guage laboratories coupled with instruction beginning as early as the fourth grade, and thirty-one courses including Latin, offered in the high school, give the Brighton student proficiency in all phases of foreign languages. Brighton's Foreign Language Plan created a most favorable impression. Cer- tainly the results on the Senior High level are very much above those observed in a school where an underlying program is not present. T his is an outstanding program. 31 LANGUAGE CLUBS Additional practice in speaking a foreign language in a social group is offered to students of the language clubs. These groups also study the customs and life of foreign nations. Guest speakers, films, and parties at which- native foods are served highlight the year's activities.
