Serving as guardians of the student body, Brighton's Board of Education is directly responsible for the welfare of the school as it carries into effect the wishes of the community. Besides making the special decisions that account for the smooth running of the school, the Board is responsible for the hiring of the teachers and the balancing of the budget. Allen B. Gates, president since l936, presides over the monthly meetings and confers with Mr. Donley on faculty appointments and school affairs. Vice-president Schuyler C. Wells, Jr., oversees instruction, supplies, and insurance. Mrs. Edward B. Miles serves as secretary, while C. E. Coapman acts as treasurer. ln charge of transportation is Arnold B. Swift, while L. Dudley Field, new member of the board, supervises maintenance. 7 we Mfzife anal guicle Aubrey D. Donley Superintendent of Schools Mrs. Helen Yawman With his ever-expanding, ever- changing staff of teachers, high school, grade school, office and janitorial staff' about him, Super- intendent of Brighton Schools, Aubrey D. Donley, commandeers from the head of the family table. He is the good father. Mainte- nance of both red schools, includ- ing correspondence, expenditures, supplies, and educational policies, come under Mr. Donley's guiding hand, and he wields his duties with foresight and wisdom. Mr. Donley has belonged to Brighton since 1927, the year the average departing senior took his first step in the ultimate direc- tion of the red-brick schoolhouse. Through all the beginning days, of the energetic, pioneer board of the first wee, but spirited, graduating class, of the gradual developing of her strong founda- tions, Mr. Donley, as principal, chartered for his Brighton school a course of enrichment and progress. J As wild fields in the dewy com- munity became transformed into squares of neat green, as shiny houses climbed up to comfort the few former lonely buildings, as more and more young eyes looked from these houses, curious to learn, Mr. Donley watched the subsequent construction of sev- eral additions to the Elmwood Avenue School and finally the rise of the new high school down the road, when he was made super- intendent of Brighton schools. Today, with Miss Alice Foley and Gordon Allen, principals of the grade school and high school, he oversees learning, character- building, and an awakening of fresh minds that promise truth and progress and mean America. Mrs. Helen Yawman, in the right-hand serving place, guards the smooth-functioning channel through which pass all appoint- ments, mail, and business for Mr. Donley. ur rowin Shoo! jami 9 Dear Graduates: Congratulations upon achieving the goal toward which you have been work- ing for twelve years. In the confusion of a war-torn world, you will find many unstable influences attempting to warp your philosophy of American institutions. Make every effort to maintain the calm, clearjudgment your home and school have attempted to give you. May l welcome you into the family of Brighton alumni and assure you that you are always welcome, whether you come back as a guest to visit or to request any service our entire faculty stands ready to give. With such slogans, Brighton students, all mem- ers of the Junior Bed Cross, collected magazines for distribution at the Cobbs Hill Military Police Barracks and in- ested our money in enrollment and war funds for Bed Cross. Collection of wire coat hangers, decorations for Christ- ias dinner tables for Military Police Barracks at Cobbs Hill, eight hundred hfty greeting cards made and sent to Lrighton men and women in the armed forces, are among products of our Bed Cross work this year. Largely because of transportation difficulties, few schools had soccer teams this year, thus expalining the small schedule. Brighton, Spencerport, and Brockport were the only schools in the league, two games with each school rounding out the schedule. The locals split in their two encounters with Spencerport, taking the first contest 2-0, but losing the return game if-2. Both games with Brockport, ended in a scoreless lie. Spenceport won the championship, with Brighton and Brockport following in that order. Besides this league play, three non-league encounters were played, one with Monroe High and two with the Rochester School for the Deaf. Monroe fell to the Twelvecorners men, 6-4. The locals edged the School for the Deaf' in the first game 2-0, but lost in the second game, 6-2. Those who received letters were: Ted Tucker, Bill Hart, John Donohue, Jolm Hill, Joe Summer- hays, Gordon Swain, Fred Palmer, Bud Searle, Don MacKay, Dave McKenzie, Tom Hoardy, Tom Killip, Bill Wilkinson, Pete Jeffries, Bob Bowlin, and Manager Jack Van De Vate. 19-1,3--111 SOCCER SCHEDULE Brighton 5 Monroe . . 2 Brighton -1 Brockpmrt .
