What a difference those four years have made in our livesl Then we were not much more than young boys and girls, now we are almost mature men and women. We have grown educationally too. Some have absorbed more than others, but all of us have had every opportunity to prepare for college or business, and for life itself. Our outlook has changed greatly. Then, before war-clouds darkened our country, we had little care in the future. Now war has come and our Future and what it holds in store for us is not certain. But this we lcnow-wherever we go and whatever we do- we will always remember Brighton High School and remain true to its traditions. DONLEV Aubrey D. Donley, Superintendent of Brighton Schools, is truly the nucleus of our high school Iile. It is he who both organizes and directs the manifold duties and intricate routines ol successful high school management. Besides advising Mr, Gordon Allen in the high school and IVIiss Alice Foley in the grade school, Mr. Donley is in charge of the teachers, the janitorial statf, the expenditure of the budget, assemblies, school correspondence, and XKQ4' the ordering of supplies and equipment. Much of the credit For the planning , ,.--f ' fi and completion of the high school building belongs to Mr. Donley whose untiring erlorts helped achieve the dream ol a new high school. 'IO VICE-PHINEIPAL UFTHE HIGH SEHUUL Gordon Allen Years ol teaching, coaching, and advising have well qualified Gordon Allen for the post ol Vice- Principal oi the high school. Besides directing the faculty ol the high school, Mr. Allen also untiringly discusses various problems with students and advises seniors concerning their choices of vocations and colleges, This year his work as adviser has been greatly increased as boys and girls need guidance in military as vvell as civil matters. Qperating the switch board, talcing messages, arranging appointments with Mr. Donley and Mr. Allen, and keeping records are only a few of the many duties vested in Mrs. l'lelen Yavvman and lVlrs. Foley Upon the shoulders of Miss Alice Foley, grade school Vice-Principal, rests the responsibility of malcing the grade school run smoothly. Besides carrying out the various intricacies of school routine, advising the teachers, and planning assemblies, Miss Foley assists students and parents in numerous difficulties and problems that arise. Much of the success for the foundation of a high school student's education belongs to the grade school and its principal. Working and playing together Pleasant surroundings insure interest 14 Junior dramatists rehearse play l.aying Foundations ln the Grade School lies the taslc of founding in the pupils the ability to learn, From the lcindergarten through the seventh grade, a foundation is consistently being laid to insure both excellent scholarly traits and Fine characteristics. Under the able guidance of the grammar school Faculty, a Brighton pupil is instilled with democratic ideals as Well as historical Facts. This is amply illustrated by the Minute Mann Flag which is Flying at the Brighton Grade School because 90 per cent or more of the pupils have bought vvar stamps to preserve their democratic way oi life. Throughout the year, grade school pupils participated in the radio program The Rochester School ol the fixirf, Music appreciation, science, and bool4 reviews vvere featured on this program. Musically minded, the students have a school band, and the Fifth, sixth, and seventh grades have glee clubs. Assemblies presented before the school were planned by many of the pupils. Next year the Social Studies program, which is now incorporated in the seventh grade, vvill be con- tinued in grades 5 and 6. It has tried to sponsor projects which would help the war ettort, increase school spirit, and give enjoyment to the students. At Christmas time the Student Council sent greeting cards to our graduates who were then in service. It sponsored dances alter several ot the baslcetball games. It engaged in a campaign over the public address system to further the sale ot vvar bonds and stamps. It obtained information which it passed on to the stu- dents concerning the correct method of saluting the Flag. The Council with the co-operation ot the faculty staged a senior-faculty baslcetball game the proceeds of which vvere turned over to the Red Cross. The Student Council also presented its annual dance which was well supported by the students. . 19 , , , ,,,, Q 1 ' , ., , ., 'x -' ,f-A a wwf' fwfr K V 'TIL In 'V T ff df A, - Ijjr - ' ff , X A 7 9 , . .ff I PLANNING STUDENT ACTIVITIES Standing: Mur , Smith, Wells. Those science note-boolcs and crowded study halls were rather confusing at First, but vve soon got used to passing classes in the narrow halls. The gym holds memories ol noon-time dancing and basketball games when the score was provided by cardboard signs in the balcony. Under the presidency of Bob lflvvell our class held a roller slcating party during the year and terminated our class activities with a picnic at Ellison Park. ln our sophomore year vve were fascinated and still a little be- vvildered by the intrigues of the nevv l-ligh School. We decided on business or academic courses and settled ourselves For oncoming years of languages and other course sequences. Qur class president was Jerry Closen. Qur junior year, under president John Mahoney vve attended a Junior-Senior dance at the invitation ol the seniors and in mid-year piclced out class rings. As a theme for our Junior Prom We choose A Night at the Circus. Alter electing Buell Culver, class president, and Diclc Smith the student council president, vve started wondering about colleges and a little later on, the draft. ln the spring vve struggled through scholastic aptitude tests, and reinaugurated the Junior-Senior dance. We terminated our year vvith a Senior Ball and Class Day. Leading a class ol 123, Arthur Couch with an average ol 96.6 and Buell Culver with an average ol 96.4 were awarded highest scholastic honors as valedictorian and salutatorian respectively. Although the statt was momentarily stunned by the autumnal departure ol adviser Miss Alice L. Foley to the post of grade school Vice-Principal, the appointment of Mrs. Mabel G. Mccleary restored confidence and the Hlrapezoidu has con- tinued to provide the student body with news and comments. No small amount of credit For the success of this yearis mlrapezoidu should be extended to the business stati, to the photography statl of Al Cooper, Dick Floberg, and Merrill Palmer, to cartoonists Buell Culver and Dick Jones, and indeed to all the ink-begrimed Workers who aided immeasurably in the unromatic tasks of writing, re-writing, headline-counting, and copy-reading. 47 Jane Shavv Fritz Ostendorf Janice Burrows Sports Boys: Dick Smith John Mahoney Girls: Ruth Clark Pat Latimer Grade Editors Pat Dunkel Peggy Benjamin Nancy DeGroot Exchange Editors Ono Lee Schlageter Elsie Weiner News Editors Rog Williamson Jo White Art Couch Don Sayles Business Managers Carmen Giacomo Bob l-lannon Top Row- Remington, G. HThe show must go on, but how? became the battle cry ot the Dramatic Club Council last lall. The war presented some serious problems to this group consisting ol Barbara Wells, President, Ken Masters, Vice-President, Pat Kelley, Secretary, and Tom Killip, the Treasurer. l-lowever they mustered up some real Dionysian spirit and delighted a lall meeting ol the club with a play entitled Who Gets the Car Tonight? A tense moving drama, Show Up, which was rather diilicult lor high school students to undertake was attempted lor the assembly presentation. The success ol this play proved that Brightonians liked serious drama just as well as comedy. That old and beloved story ol Daddy-l.ong-Legs was unfolded by the dramatists ior their spring play, .lane Shaw and Ted Tucker headed the cast. This was one ol the largest productions we have ever at- tempted as it claimed lour acts and a large list ol props, to say nothing ol two changes in scenery. S100 ol the proceeds went into the Crossroads publication. 48 FUHUNI Top Row: Williamson, Culver, Leene, D. Smith, Masters, O'Brien. Third Row: G. Cohen, Killip, Thiede, S.
