IPAGE Twol As a mute symbol of the crude beginnings from which a fine school sys- tem has grown, there stands on the corner of Monroe and Highland Avenues a small briclq building fondly referred to as The Little Red Schoolhouse. For many years this tiny school served the needs of a large portion of the present district. It was over a decade ago that this rapidly-growing community, realizing the inadequacy of the one-room school, erected at the Twelve Corners the present school building. Within a few years new wings were added in order to provide for the large number of students who desired high school training. Scarcely were the new wings in use before they were overcrowded, and the need for a separate high school building arose. This need the community is now meeting by the erection of a fine new high school on the Winton Road side of the Twelve Corners property. When this modern structure is completed, the present building can be turned over entirely to the grade school. Such a fast-growing school system denotes a fast-growing, progressive community. Firmly believing that our school has kept pace with the rapid development of the community, the Senior Class of Brighton High School presents in this boolq the picture of BRIGHTON, A PROGRESSIVE SCHOOL. The school of tomorrow, or rather the school of next year, is shown here as the artist has conceived it. More than a mere flight of imagination, however, the new school is already well under constr t' IPAGE. THREE1 ,7 , C Ni' , KM rx 1 ,f' I ,, 1 ,,,ln' -f '. 4 -, 1. Donley, the largest teaching staff yet to serve in Brighton High School now numbers sixty- tvvo members. Far from being classed as pedagogues by us students, the high school teachers are regarded rather as friends under whose sympathetic leadership we can acquire a Well-rounded edu- cation. As advisers of numerous extra-curricu- lar activities, they give many hours of time outside the classroom to help us with these interests of ours. No staff of teachers could be more scholarly in its point of view nor more devoted to its task. Brighton, a progressive school community, has its nucleus in its progressive faculty. mi f frank F0 URI 3rd Ron: Hzunmoml. lbonzxlrlson, Arnold. Friclxcr. Monkey. The foundations of a sound education are laid during the time the child spends in the grade school. Here he forms those habits and acquires those skills which will determine, in a large measure, the success of his entire scholastic career. No effort is spared, therefore, to make our grammar school as fine as possible. Under the guidance of a devoted staff, the child is taught respect for all work, confidence in his own ability, and control over both his body and his mind. Mutual understanding and close co-opera- tion between the home and the school bring about a natural, happy development of the young child. GRADE FACULTY CHRISTINE C. Donley, who has served this community in the capacity of principal and school superintendent for over a decade, and without the Board of Education, which has Worked so unselfishly with him, Brighton would not today enjoy the reputation which it has as a progressive school offering to its youth educational advantages comparable with the best found anywhere in American public schools. Far down the clearing vista can be seen a labyrinth- like chaos from which the Class of 1939 was finally evolved. Each individual threaded his way up the ladder of childhood, some destined to branch off and be forgotten by us, and others to be remembered and endeared as one of us. It is interesting to note that in reviewing histories of the preceding Senior Classes, there has been a common pattern of similar feelings experienced by each in turn-all profess to have felt a wide-eyed inferiority tempered with a spirit of de- velopment when but lowly Freshmen, to have honestly at- tempted to raise their scholastic and social ranking when slipping into budding Sophomorismg to have thoroughly enjoyed a full and worthwhile Iunior year, and to have donned the majestic robes of superiority in the Senior year, with not a few apprehensive glances into the future. So, since we also are a normal, healthy, rosy-cheeked Senior class, we find it only fitting to reiterate these traditional words. As usual, our class has had most of its important activities crowded into its Senior year, although a Freshman party, fre- quent Sophomore roller-skating affairs, and the Iunior Prom have been featured previously. This year, the Crossroads of 1939, a card party, the senior ball, and an extensive class day have fallen under the sponsorship of the Seniors. No class can function successfully without a competent group of class oiiicers. ln our estimation we have indeed been fortunate to have had the following students in oificial capacities. 1936 1937 1938 1939 Pres. An impressive majority of the great edu- cators of today agree that a modern school is sadly incomplete without some expression of student self-government. This need is met at Brighton by the Student Council. Although the powers of our tribunal are, of course, limited, we still maintain that sense of democracy which is so important in our later life as citizens of a great republic. At the beginning of the school vear, elec- tions were held in which class representatives were chosen to act as delegates to the Con- gress, Robert Yates was elected to the position of council president. The Council sponsored noon dancing in the gym during the winter months. mm STUDENT COUNCIL WAGE TwENTy,i3iGHTj ni ROW: Ruehy. Bnwu, Hopfmfr, Suxnimmruli, Hurst. Iicnnrich, ROSS, Humk. TRAPEZOID Again referring to our theme, we find that a parallel may also be drawn between the progress of our school and that of the school paper, the Trapezoidf' Functioning spasrnodically in its first at- tempt to gain a foothold, the paper has finally evolved into the uTrapezoid of today, a high school journalistic effort of which we are justly proud. Under the editorship of Russell Hopcraft, the laudable accomplishment of earning the general excellence award in a western New York school journalistic conference was at- tained. Again this year the paper took a third prize for schools of its class in the Columbia University Press contest. Illlllll 2 IPAGE THIRTYI i. The various student productions offered throughout the year under the spon- sorship of the Dramatic Club are eagerly awaited and enthusiastically received by us students. Early last falh as usual, each high school class selected two council members and two alternates to represent it at council meetings. Under the skillful direction of Miss Margaret Karges and Iay Gibson the club presented two one-act plays in the fall and a three-act play in the early spring. All of these plays were above the usual level of high school produc- tions. This year was, undoubtedly, one of the most outstanding in the history of our Dra- matic Club. IW , .. FRENCH CLUB The French Club provides an opportunity for students interested in the language to ob- tain a better knowledge of the French people themselves and of their language, their cus- toms, and their arts. With the assistance of its advisers, Mrs. Norma Fox and Miss Ruth Maxwell, the club prepared this year, in accordance with a time- honored custom, a display of French projects. The culmination of a pleasant and prohtable year for those of us who are members of the club came during the Week in May when these projects were on display. One afternoon of that Week, we invited our parents and faculty members to attend a French play and a tea in the school auditorium. llll H 1nuvvrv,rr1 rrr, rrrrfvn Y uvwuqrn u, rrvvr rv IPAGE THIRTY-THRIilil 'lily Row: Goldstein, laylor. Yenxur The ability to converse, argue, and comment intelligently on matters of world-wide interest is a vital necessity in our modern life. Debating is an ideal path towards the ease of manner, clearness of thought, and logic in reasoning which we all desire. Spreading its wings after its initiation last year, our debating club, known as the A'Acies, enjoyed an active, profitable year. Delegates from the club represented it at a conference held under the auspices of Syracuse University this spring. With the aid of its advisers, Miss Margaret Young, Miss Ruth Shattuck, and Gordon Allen the club presented several debates for the benefit of interested students. In it the student learns to do independent research, to evaluate knowledge, and to tap the treasures of literature. Since the library is so important, it follows logically that the Library Club is an important part of our activities. The members of the club render valuable assistance to Miss Ethel Regin, school librarian, while they learn how a library is run. During the year the girls have speakers appear before them to discuss questions which are of interest to high school girls. It is natural for the artist to wish to share the fruits of his talents with others. Providing an outlet for these artistic talents and ambitions, the Art Club gives practical aid to almost every other school organization by providing posters, charts, and sketches. It is ar- ranged so that the senior group alternates with the junior group. Among our student body the number participating in this educational recreation has always been large. The Philatelic Club, a comparatively new organization, was formed to meet the needs of our ardent stamp collectors. Under the lead- ership of Cassius Conner and Miss Marion Perrin this club meets frequently to exchange stamps and discuss philatelic problems. Football is a sport that develops Within its players courage and fight and the ability 'gto take itf, Our boys last fall demonstrated these qualities in full measure. The spirit of the team is reflected in the spirit of the student body which supported it so loyally. Under the leadership of an en- thusiastic corps of cheer leaders, the students gave the team the encouragement which it needed to keep it Hout there fighting all sea- SOD. -4. llllllll n-land-an IPAGE FORTYVTYVOI snl Row: llaicll. In accordance with its progressive policy, Brighton High School has been among the first in this vicinity to equip a field for this sport. This year our boys will appear in at- tractive, school-owned uniforms when they enter the vicinity meets. Although this sport is new at Brighton, our team performed cretlitably last spring. Bob Meredith, memher of this yearis senior class, placed in the Sectionals at the University of Rochester. Under the leadership of Cassius Conner, who is acting as coach, the team will enter the Monroe County Class A League, playing teams from Irondequoit, Hilton, East Rochester, Brockport, Spencerport, and Webster. ln the opening game with Irondequoit our team lost a 5-3 decision, but nothing daunted, the lads are out to better their fourth place tie received in last yearls league tilt. lllllll W I lg?-is IPAGE FORTY POURI lrtl Row: Mosher, Cottrticc, Kraft, R. The speed, the suspense, and the thrill of the game have made it one of the favorites of the competitive sports offered here. This year's team proved itself a worthy successor to those fine ones which have rep- resented our school in the past. Beginning the season with two non-league games, the quint improved steadily under the clever coaching of Ross Smith. Several times the boys were able to vvrest victory from apparent defeat by their never say die spirit. At the end of the season the team was tied with Irondequoit for third place in the County League, an accomplishment especially gratify- ing since, at the beginning of the season, pros- pects had been none too bright. X tnlura, Reiner Although golf is a minor sport in Brighton, it has at- tracted considerable attention from the links-minded students. From the eight or more boys who tried gallantly to gain po- sitions on the team, Fred Gold- berg, Arthur Taylor, Robert Yates, and Kenneth Schlegel appear to have the inside track for the four positions in the matches with East Rochester, Monroe and other local schools. Although it is difficult for the boys to get in much practice because our tennis courts are not yet completed, Brighton will be represented by a tennis team this year. The boys have three or four matches planned with neigh- boring schools and expect to represent our school in a credit- able manner. Mario Ventura, Fred Weis- miller, and Charles Reiner are the lads Who will carry Brigh- ton's colors on the tennis court this spring. This year, two leagues were ac- tively engaged in games within their groups, and also in con- tests with the intramural teams of other schools. Undefeated in home games, the team of nlinx- esl, fell into undisputable posi- tion of first place. INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL Ven '1 Chri 'I.i'lor, l'.i Rel ' WINNERS OF TOURNAMENTS N. The widely-followed bad- minton tournament was won by the Dick Miller-Norman Summers tandem who, after two unsuccessful attempts in the finals, defeated Robert Yates and Mario Ventura. Ralph Hurst again displayed his foul shooting ability by win- ning the annual contest for the second time in a row. Although below his record of 41 made last year, Ralph by a total of 37 baskets out of 50 tries, won again this year. IPAGE F0 TY SEVEN1 VOLLEYBALL ,LLLLL . L. llennriclm, F. Rochow, R. Rochow, Scega, Reiner Although Brighton did not have a reg- ular trained swimming team, a group of boys represented our school in Class B of Section 5 at a meet held at the Univer- sity of Rochester this spring. Turning in a surprisingly good per- formance, the team captured third place in its class. Charles Bowlin came off with top honors in the diving contest. COACHES Znd Row: Mr. Reed, Mr. Hill, Mr. Conner. lst Row: Mr. Smith, Miss Karges, Mr. Allen. Although formerly considered something of a girls, sport, participation in volleyball by the stronger sex has eradicated this belief. Organizing themselves in four teams of six men each, the players this year showed a L heartier interest than those of previous years. SWIMMING F. Rmlww, llennrith, R, Roehnw llmvlin, Rimlmll Without the untiring efforts of our coaches Brightonls progressive sports pro- grams could not he effected. To them we owe our gratitude not alone for the fine teams they have pro- duced but for far greater things-for the spirit of good sportsmanship, of clean, hard play for the love of it-which they manage somehow to inculcate within every student who is privileged to work with them. IPAGE FORTY-EIGHT I GIRLS' ATHLETICS The intramural program for girls fosters within us girls the spirit of good sportsman- ship and give us, in addition, many hours of fun throughout the year. Through our sports We girls become better acquainted with one another and learn how to take both victory and defeat. We experience the thrill of keen competition and the com- radeship that only sports can bring.. Basketball, soccer, baseball, badminton, ping pong, riding, swimming, archery, volley ball, Newcomb ball, and hiking are among the sports oPfered for our enjoyment. Of all these basketball is, perhaps, the favor- ite. This year Mildred Horstls freshman team won the intra-class championship after a series of exciting play-offs.
