When the University Librarian, in a letter to President Franklin S. Kar- ris in 1923, expressed embarrassment at not having sufficient library space nor shelf room to take care of the increasing numbers of books, the initial impetus was given to a move- ment which culminater in the con- struction of the spacious Heber J. Grant Library. . . . and in view of his sincere love of books, and his generosity as Trustee-in-Trust of the Church in pro- viding funds for this building, the new Library was named in honor of the li- ' te President Grant. 13

Just a war ago, a single-storied building, to be used in war work, was being rushed to completion. However, with the unantici- pated signing of the Armistice, the building was converted to peacetime usage for classes in auto mechanics and woodwork, and was known as the Mechanic Arts Build- ing. Years later, in 1935, in order to meet the demands of the University, the Board of Education authorized the erection of two additional floors, and the new building was re-christened in honor of George H. Brim- hall, an enthusiastic supporter and one of the earlier presidents of the school. In addi- tion to its former services the new building provided space for the teaching of the exact and biological sciences, and for the Depart- ment of Office Practice. 15
