SQ Against a backdrop of the tall, rugged Wasatch Mountains, the stately and modern Joseph Smith Building is the most recent of all the campus buildings. Though planned as a center tor activities in the humanities, it has also become a popular social center for campus life. Around the cheery fireplace on Sunday evenings, students gather to discuss subjects of interest. Within its assembly halls during the week, the learned or famed talk of prob- lems of today, or noted artists help us to acquire an appreciation of the finer arts. There also students enjoy the spirit and talents revealed in student body assemblies. And as the evening comes, youth dances in the handsomely decorated ballroom. II

When the University Librarian, in a letter to President Franklin S. Kar- ris in 1923, expressed embarrassment at not having sufficient library space nor shelf room to take care of the increasing numbers of books, the initial impetus was given to a move- ment which culminater in the con- struction of the spacious Heber J. Grant Library. . . . and in view of his sincere love of books, and his generosity as Trustee-in-Trust of the Church in pro- viding funds for this building, the new Library was named in honor of the li- ' te President Grant. 13
