With a firm and ample hose And ascending and secure Shall tomorrow find its place. Longfellow MaeA e i From its vantage point on the crest of University Hill, and looking westward over beautiful Utah Valley, the Maeser Memorial Building stands today as a tribute to the most prominent man in the early history of this University — Dr. Karl G. Maeser. As the first teacher, and later as the first presi- dent of the youthful University, he estab- lished the high standards for which this institution has become well-known. Dignified by majestic columns, this mem- orial hall, first of the buildings to be located on the upper campus, houses the adminis- trative forces of the University: the Office of the President and his correlative depart- ments, the Associated Students Offices, and the University Press. ' TiC ' : ' ( il : :x - ■■I I iS 8 i V ' V- SQ Against a backdrop of the tall, rugged Wasatch Mountains, the stately and modern Joseph Smith Building is the most recent of all the campus buildings. Though planned as a center tor activities in the humanities, it has also become a popular social center for campus life. Around the cheery fireplace on Sunday evenings, students gather to discuss subjects of interest. Within its assembly halls during the week, the learned or famed talk of prob- lems of today, or noted artists help us to acquire an appreciation of the finer arts. There also students enjoy the spirit and talents revealed in student body assemblies. And as the evening comes, youth dances in the handsomely decorated ballroom. II 12 When the University Librarian, in a letter to President Franklin S. Kar- ris in 1923, expressed embarrassment at not having sufficient library space nor shelf room to take care of the increasing numbers of books, the initial impetus was given to a move- ment which culminater in the con- struction of the spacious Heber J. Grant Library. . . . and in view of his sincere love of books, and his generosity as Trustee-in-Trust of the Church in pro- viding funds for this building, the new Library was named in honor of the li- ' te President Grant. 13 I i I r t f p [[rrr III JnMmrv.lLj 11 I 1 (V ' 7 yTy« jB g; liigiiaMiMOTiir ' - - ■ i Just a war ago, a single-storied building, to be used in war work, was being rushed to completion. However, with the unantici- pated signing of the Armistice, the building was converted to peacetime usage for classes in auto mechanics and woodwork, and was known as the Mechanic Arts Build- ing. Years later, in 1935, in order to meet the demands of the University, the Board of Education authorized the erection of two additional floors, and the new building was re-christened in honor of George H. Brim- hall, an enthusiastic supporter and one of the earlier presidents of the school. In addi- tion to its former services the new building provided space for the teaching of the exact and biological sciences, and for the Depart- ment of Office Practice. 15 4 Through the generosity of ten prom- inent Utah citizens, whose names appear on a marble plaque on the wall within, the College Building was erected and dedicated eight years after the occupation of the adjacent Education Building. This gave the University added prestige as an in- stitution of higher learning, and sep- arated it from the High School. Today within this building, stu- dents of the Fine Arts learn to appre- ciate more fully the subjects of their particular fields — music, speech, and drama. 17 Zducatij n Mantled with ivy, and partially hidden among the evergreens of the lower campus, the Education Building, dedicated early in 1892, is the oldest of the University buildings. To those who were striving hard to keep the struggling Academy going, the dedication of this building was significant. In contrast- ing the first humble home of the University with this fine new structure. Dr. Karl G. Maeser said, The old man taught in a cabin, but they have built a palace for his boys. It served well its purpose then, and it continues to do so today. But as new and modern edifices appear on the upper cam- pus, the old Education Building grows more picturesque with its towers, and arches, and clinging vines. 19 20 BOOK 10 22 And when we thin we lead we are most lead. Byron 23 The youth of Zion who heretofore have known but one president of the Church — the late President Grant — now look with trust and confidence to their new leader, President George Albert Smith, for the continuance of counsel and guidance in the spiritual and temporal ways of living. Known throughout the country and the Church as a friend of the young people. President Smith possesses the wisdom, dis- cernment, and foresight, the spiritual vitality, and understanding love with which to guide them onward through this chaotic post-war period. He teaches truth as a shield against temptation and sin. The youth of Zion heartily sustain and honor him as prophet, seer and revelator — our leader. 24 PRESIDENT HOWARD S, McDONALD Bringing with him a thorough background of training and experience in various fields of education, particularly in school administration, and possessing strong re- ligious convictions and an enviable record in Church activities. President Howard S. McDonald, on November 14, 1945, became the fifth president of the Brigham Young University, succeeding Dr. Franklin S. Harris. President McDonald ' s winning smile, his radiant warmth for meeting people, and his sincere interest in the students and concern for their welfare, have endear- ed him to our hearts. His visions of a great building program in the future to handle adequately the growing registration at the University, lets us look forward with eager anticipation. President McDonald, we welcome you. 25 In stately and inspiring inaugural services, President Howard S. McDonald accepted the two-fold charge given to him by President J. Reuben Clark, Jr., of the first presidency of the Church: first, to penetrate the mental fog which surrounds the world and unseat ignorance, and second, to teach the gospel of God. In reply to the charge, the President stated, ' These responsibilities I accept, and I will try to uphold the great traditions of this institution established by my predecessors. Thus Howard S. McDonald, on November 14, 1945, was inaugurated as the fifth president of Brigham Young University. 26 27 Ever vigilant in guctrd- ing the youth of Zion, this illustrious group sets the standards and determines the policies of B.Y.U. With such an interested and capable body of men to guide us, we could do naught but progress to heights unknown. i J. Reuben Clarkr David O. McKay. Top: John A. Widtsoe, Frank- lin L. West, Adam S. Sauls, efficiently handles his duo-titled task as Secretary-Treasurer of the Uni- versity. He is capably assisted by Miss Carma Ballif who super- vises the business of the Trea- surer ' s Office. These smiling of- fice workers are Harriet Young, Laie Thurber and Lavon Whiting who wrestle with the unending columns of figures which find their way into that office. 30 Since the declarations of peace, and the return of service men and women, registration at this University has been climb- ing to unprecedented heights. But with that same genial com- posure and efficiency that mark- ed the registration of his first dozen college students of the Brigham Young Academy in 1904, Registrar John E. Hayes, with his competent staff, handles the three thousands who are en rolled today. 31 2) eon Dr. Wesley P. Lloyd, as Dean of Students and Chairman ot the Committee of Special Services, two newly-created offices, capably assists the President of the University in supervising the welfare of students, noting their progress and accom- plishments, and assisting with their problems. In this position, Dean Lloyd, efficiently aided by members of the Faculty, deals with Freshmen orientation, the activities of social units, and student employment. Clark, of the College, of Commerce, possesses that rare and amiable personality which makes all who know him like him. Living about as far away as possible to be still considered a resident of Provo, Dean Clark walks to and from his home — and loves it. Among those who have classes from him, it is said that his stories always apply to the principle at hand, and his associates know him as one to stimulate individual thinking. Students of the University, and residents of Provo and the adjacent area are indebted to Dean Clark for the excellent and varied lyceum programs which are brought to us, and ore appreciative of nis efforts in obtaining the best artists and lectures for our entertainment and betterment. 36 Pioiessor E - Se Processor aouliii ,tan ;aUon and ssls ,tant ProlessoT s: - 37 2 eon If it is true that the first test of a great man is his humility, Dean Carl F. Books hold a great fascination for him, and he lectures to students with great zest. In response to his characteristic love of the out- of-doors, he spends a considerable amount of time traveling. The opening gome was the an- nual grudge battle between Alum- ni and Varsity, which resulted in a close win for the Alumni. This game nevertheless served to con- vince supporters and critics alike that a successful season awaited this near-girls school. A pre-sea- son trip through Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming farther accentuated the possibilities of the team ' s mak- ing it a close Big Seven race. He returned to the Y in October, ' 45 and has since been plan- ning and building a fight- ing eleven comparable to our scheduled opponents of next season when we re-enter the conference for the first time since ' 42. Mentor Millet, a graduate from BYU, has been checked out on every coaching position on the campus. In ' 41 he was made basketball coach and when Eddie Kimball left for the Navy in ' 42 Floyd took over and engineered a determined squad to our first upset over the U. of U. grid team in twenty years. An all-round Y athlete in col- lege days. Coach Buck Dixon returned to the Y in 1928 to teach an dcoach athletes of Y high and University. His pres- ent duties are confined mainly to varsity tennis, teaching phy- sical education classes and managing the Intramural pro- gram. Qaackei Wayne Soffe who was assigned to the coaching staff of the varsity boxing and wrestling department, with- line coaching duties on the gridiron is expected to be separated from the Navy this Summer to aid in developing a brawn team next year. He spent the majority of cm extend- ed leave working with prospective linemen in Spring football workouts this season. 15 , 135 pAma o dmii A combination of the late return from the Navy of our head football coach, Eddie Kimball, combined with the marked absence of eligible men, the Y was forced to forego Fall football competition, but with the inter- mittent return of skilled brawn material Coach Kimball organized Spring workouts giving special instruction to backfield poten- tials while Wayne Soffe, on leave from the Navy coaches the linemen. The return of the following lettermen will serve to augment, with Y exper- ience, the superior-planned squad for the season ' 46- ' 47. The next Fall schedule re-enters the Cougar club in the Big Seven league with auxiliary games being played with San Jose in California and a trip to El Paso, Texas for a dig with the Texas Miners. 137 jeHMU I , Varsity tennis opened a promising season with the return of four Ittermen: B. Bailey, Hyde, Mangum, and K. Wilson. The first competition was realized in a trip into Ute territory at Salt Lake where we made a fair showing. The Y netters bowed 5 to 2. Individual victories were; Singles, Don Evans, defeating Vernie Swenson of Utah, 9-7, 6-2. In the Double trouble, Thurgood and Mangum merged to humble Koch and Williams of Utah, 6-4, 2-6, 64. Other meets will be the BYU Invitational Track Meet, Divisional Tennis and the Conference Meet. 9. Above: Coach Fred Buck Dixon checking out hopefuls. Testing events for a relative- ly unproved squad were realized in the Invitational Track Meet the latter part of April, where the Y entered the 100-yard dash, mile relay, medley relay, high jump, pole vault, shot put, discus throw, and javelin throw. May 18 saw the Y repre- sented at the State Meet and for the finale we entered the conference meet at Denver. We can be confident, however, of the four lettermen above, who have in past years dis- tinguished themselves in track and field events. The lettermen are; Carl Clark, conference pole vaulter; Less Cannon and Brady Walker, weights; and Russ Nielson, all around. At the right is Nelson clearing the hurdle with ease. Below are the quarter-milers, Roberts and Newberry. 140 JpWi IcuiiA The academic year 1945-46 passed through the Cougar campus and observed the greatest conversion this school has experienced. The king of sports, varsity football was of necessity intombed. With the opening of the hoop season enough basketeers had returned to make the club into a going concern. Basketball held top honors as the major sport on the campus with the intramural program absorbing those interested in short, non-training periods of participation. Smokeless smok- ers held their share of the spotlight, with the full beam on the once quiet ghostly gridiron for spring football workouts. Coach Eddie Kimball returned too late to whip a fall team into shape but is well started on a hopeful season for next year. The sportslight flashed to the thirty-third Annual Invitation Track and Field Meet and Relay Carniv al, resumed after war years, to highlight the spring sports season. The Y campus is centered in the wonderland of a sportsman ' s paradise. To the north and east is found an abundance of superior skiing, hiking and camping; to the west, Utah lake offers ice skating, swimming and boating; to the south, a class A golf course and skeet range are growing in popularity. These aid in augmenting the regular campus activities which are speedily reaching adequacy. The Cougar is now poised on the threshold of a New Golden Era of University activities, tensed for the starting whistle to lunge into the world of oppor- tunity to battle his way to collegiate supremacy, main- taining our cherished individuality. ; 141 !)inimm44A 2li The Intramural system, under the direction of Coach Fred Buck Dixon flourished with new zest and active participation. The flexible organization of the system this year made it possible to absorb the ever present returning of masculine gender to the campus with sporting activities indoor and out- door placed at the top of their curriculum. Boxing and wrestling tournaments and basketball contests were featured durmg the fall and winter quarters with tennis, volleyball, softball and baseball on the schedule for spring aspirants. Hawkins, Stutz and Phillips carried the responsibility of the ring events with Paul Wilson worrying about the student man- agement of the system at large. Hart, meet director, Miss Leona Holbrook. in charge of women ' s events and B Y U Athletic Director Eddie Kimball the 33rd an- nual track and field meet and relay carnival unfolded a panorama of thrills and pageantry April 25, 26, 27 in the Y stadium Distin- guished athletes from 65 schools representing 6 states performed in ideal weather to successfully re-establish the cinder classic among the ouistanding sports events. The University of South- ern California captured a ead position in the inter- collegiate division, while Branch Agricultural College and East High won coveted honors in their respective departments. All - around champion of the meet was a junior from Mesa High School in Arizona, Wilford White. Proving himself the greatest trackster to perform in the Y stadium, White cap- tured seven firsts of the nine events to aggregate 6225 points. I 145 Skiing proved one of the most popular sports on the campus this season. A com- bination of Miss Holbrook ' s ski class and the Timpan- ogos Mountain Club served as organized units sponsor- ing weekly ski trips to the down-hill wonder lands of the State. The majority of enthusiasts in this pastime found good skiing at Alta, Snow Basin in Ogden, or at our own Stewart Flats in Provo Canyon. Highlights of the season were the vari- ous moonlight ski trips, both as a class and otherwise. As to the lone stranger in the per left corner, his identity uakes a good guess.
