CORONA 1969 BRIDGTON HIGH SCHOOL Bridgton, Maine Editor-in-Chief. . . Jane Glatz Business Manager . . . Jon Beal Faculty Advisors . . . Mrs. Abigail Lumsden Mr. Robert Dwelley PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Graduation is drawing near and you will soon be receiving the diplomas which you have successfully earned. As you, the Class of 1969, join the ranks of alumni of Bridgton High School, may the friendships you have enjoyed, the concepts you have learned, and the experiences you have realized contribute to your future success and happiness. Your generation, like all others before you, is confronted with many anxieties, frustrations, and problems. Fortunately, you also face num- erous changes, improvements, challenges, and opportunities. It is my sincere wish that each of you continue to develop the qualities and characteristics of understanding, respect, patience, and tolerance which will be valuable in providing for your personal happiness and satis- faction and which will contribute to an enjoyable relationship with others. The Class of 1969 is the last class to be graduated from Bridgton High School, which has served the youth of this area for nearly a century. As we look to the future at Lake Region High School, may the excellent characteristics exemplified by B.H.S. students for these many years continue to prevail in this new educational facility. The faculty joins with me in extending to you our sincere wishes for a successful and gratifying future. Fred M. Crouse Principal 2 CONTENTS ACTIVITIES SPORTS UNDERCLASSMEN SENIORS BRIDGTON HIGH SCHOOL 20 46 66 74 94 DEDICATION Ours is the last class ever to graduate from Bridgton High School. For this reason, the dedication of our CORONA was not a simple matter, but a task which re- quired much deliberation and thought. We wished to make our dedication unique, and to someone truly de- serving of such an honor. We therefore chose a teacher who has taught, influenced and aided, a friend who has welcomed and guided, and most of all. a leader who has shown us the way through four difficult years of growing up. As we face the future, we look back over those years and, with great pride and pleasure, dedicate the 1969 CORONA to the Bridgton High School faculty. 4 t 6 ADMINISTRATION Mr. Woodbury Saunders-Superintendent of Schools University of Maine, B.S., C.A.S.; Boston University, M. There was a man from South Paris, And his voice was like that of Phil Harris, Every morning at eight, he sang as he ate And that’s why the neighbors left Paris. His pretty young wife leads a much different life, For she loves her garden and flowers. Every morning at four, she goes out the door To her garden of posies, which is mostly of roses. And remains there for hours Just smelling the flowers, While her lazy husband still dozes. MALCOLM BACON CORONA 1947 THE BREEZES The breezes, the breezes. They blow through the trcezes. They wheezes and wheezes Wherever they pleases. They give me the sneezes. And all kinds of diseases; Disgusting, isn’t it? DORIS GILMAN CORONA 1947 LITERARY BIG BLOOMER BLUES Those ugly suits of navy blue. Equipped with giant bloomers, too. With tops, an object of distaste, Are small and skimpy, short of waist. The maker must have been obscessed. Or else he just went mad and guessed. For what he thought of, I declare. Look just like King Kong underwear. susan McDonald CORONA 1966 END OF THE TRAIL Before I owned a pair of skis. I’d gaze upon the slopes And see the graceful figures fly The T-bar and the ropes. I vowed that I upon those boards Would in the future glide With grace and skill and nonchalance Upon that mountainside. But woe is me. No skier, I, I found without delay; For on my first attempt at it, A tree got in my way. CHEERLEADERS Bizike! Bizuke! Bizish! —Bidily—Oten-Doten-Bo-Bo -Ba-Ditcn-Daten- Wha Daten Dat. So went a cheer introduced to the BHS students by the cheerleaders of 1946-1947. This tongue-twister has long since been abandoned and replaced by shorter, simpler ones, but the spirit still lingers on. The cheerleaders are to be congratulated for doing a fine job backing the teams and making every game complete. Many thanks to Mrs. Kilborn and Mrs. Richards for the guidance and advice that they gave the girls during the year. A lighthearted start... a tense climax ... Coached by Mr. Buckncll, the softball team completed a successful 1968 season. . . . a confident finish. 53 BOYS BASKETBALL The Varsity team completed the 1968-1969 season successfully with an 8 8 record. Having won the magazine drive, we received free refreshments at the V.I.P. Dance. Our top salesman was Richard Douglass. At initiation the Freshmen displayed good sportman- ship with their hilarious performances. Other than the flying feathers and scrambled eggs, the evening went off smoothly, and everyone had a wonderful time. The Freshman Class chose Debbie Burnell as Home- coming Queen Candidate. Jeff Ingraham was her escort. We placed first in attendance at the dance. Student Council representatives from the Freshman Class are Karen Bothwell, Gregg Speed, and Marcia Warren. We offer the Senior Class our sincere best wishes for graduation and the future. SOPHOMORES Class of 71 The Sophomore Class began the school year with an enrollment of seventy-five. We elected Martha Gyger, Donna Martin, Ann Skillin, and Jim Ellis as Student Council representatives. Cathy Quinn was chosen Homecoming Queen Candi- date. Although we did not win, Sophomores still showed great class and school spirit. The Sophomore Hop, featuring the Untamed Sound, was held December 13. We welcome the Freshman Class to Bridgton High and congratulate the Juniors for their success in Homecoming. And most of all we wish the Seniors best of luck after graduation from B.H.S. Future Plans: College 91 IN REMEMBRANCE OF THE PAST IN CONTEMPLATION OF THE FUTURE 93 BRIDGTON HIGH SCHOOL Bridgton High School originated in 1872, with the opening of a new Grammar and High School on Gibbs Avenue. Previously, the local children could obtain a secondary school education only at private institutions, such as Bridgton Academy. The original building was enlarged in 1931, when a new wing was completed. This included a manual training room in the basement and a freshman homeroom upstairs. In 1949 a new high school building was opened. With the rapid increase in enrollment, a large addition was soon added, and finally much of the curriculum had to be resumed in the original building. In addition to the local scholars, many tuition students also were enrolled. In 1931 tuition was $100 per year, and advertisements described BHS as “A spendid school for pupils who must leave home to acquire a secondary education.” By 1939, for some reason, the tuition had dropped to $80 per year. Over the years, Bridgton High’s curriculum has changed to accompany the trends of changing times. Elocution and Music courses were begun in 1882. Although later discontinued as regular courses, they are still available in modified forms as Prize Speaking, Glee Club, and Band. Greek was once taught, but was replaced in 1904 by French and German. Later, German had to be discontinued for lack of a teacher. Although College Preparatory courses were offered from the beginning, the need for other courses was later realized. Domestic Science and Manual Training were established in the Twenties, and the Commercial Course was begun in 1935. These courses provided more useful training for students who did not intend to go to college. Extra-curricular activities have provided the welcome pleasure of frequent breaks from the daily grind of the “3-R’s”. Glee clubs have been active for many years at BHS. The Boys’ Glee Club was begun in 1926 as a separate organization from the previously—formed Girls’ Glee Club. In those days, the clubs put on operettas in the local theater. More recently, the Glee Clubs, now combined, put on two concerts during the course of the year, under the experienced supervision of Mrs. Mona Irish. The Girls’ Glee Club has always been well-attended, but the Boys’ Glee Club has experienced fluctuations in popularity. The 1940 CORONA states that during that year “the dreams of our director came true,” for boys attended Glee Club for the first time in six years. The band has been an active musical organization at BHS. Bridgton also once had a High School Orchestra. In 1961 a separate director was hired for the band, somewhat alleviating the duties of Mrs. Irish, who could then devote her full time to choral music. The least popular extra-curricular activity was begun in 1933. This was the organization (or more probably the semi-organization) of a regularly scheduled detention period. A magazine drive, similar to those of today, was conducted in 1926. To increase subscriptions, the drive was organized on a competitive basis. Three teams were formed, the Comets, the Rockets, and the Meteors. The two losing teams were required to put on a “Trip to the Moon” party for the winners. Half the proceeds were awarded to the school and used for new gym equipment. Winter Carnivals have been a familar activity at Bridgton High. In bygone days, plans included snowshoe races on Highland Lake and a hockey game between schoolboys and outsiders. A fire was built, and the spectators and participants ate their dinners at the lake. Later, ski racing and snow sculpturing became the primary activities of the Winter Carnival celebration. During the Thirties, several Athletic Carnivals were held as money-raising projects. Performances included boxing, folk dancing, basketball drills, calisthenics, a dumb-bell drill, and a tumbling and bar exhibit. The Athletic Carnival of 1933 featured a game between the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams. Although inhibited by boxing gloves, the boys won. In the mid-Sixties, a similar fund-raising activity, the annual Gymnastic Demonstration was begun under the direction of Mr. Fred Ross. Sports at Bridgton High School have varied over the years. Currently, boys’ sports include football, cross country, basketball, skiing, and baseball. Girls may participate in skiing, basketball, and softball. A sad episode in Bridgton High’s football program occurred in 1926, when a BHS player was killed as a result of injuries sustained in a football game. Following this tragedy, football was temporarily discontinued. In 1929 Bridgton entered a basketball league organized by the YMCA, and in 1936 boys’ intramural basketball was started. That same year girls’ interscholastic basketball was discontinued, but due to the resourcefulness of Martha Harris, girls’ physical director, intramural soccer, basketball, volleyball, and softball were made available to the girls. Martha Harris also oversaw the formation of an Athletic Council of Students, which chose intramural team members and deliberated any questions which arose. A ski club was formed in 1946 and later became the Boys’ Ski Team. A ski team for girls was later formed. Undoubtedly the best year for Bridgton’s sports was 1947-1948, when the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams and football team each played an undefeated season, and the football team captured the state championship. 1965-1966 proved an excellent year for Cross-Country. That year Dennis Crane was the top runner in Maine, while his brother Darryl placed third in the state. The CORONA was started under the supervision of Mr. Albert Richardson, the first principal of Bridgton high, who held the office between 1873 and 1883. The CORONA was a monthly paper. Later, as a small paperback, it was published semi-annually at a fee of thirty-five cents. During the Depression, because of a scarcity of funds, the CORONA could only be published once a year. Because of the high cost of photography in the yearbook, older issues of the CORONA were composed largely of written matter. This made possible a clear picture of student life. Besides writeups on the various sports and activities, the CORONA included editorials, incidental student news items and pages of student-submitted jokes. Most of these jokes were incredibly “corny,” which only added to the charm of the book. O’Brien: “I’ve an awful headache.” Cook: “It must be this damp weather. It gets into the bones.” And the inevitable faculty tease: For Sale: One second-hand car, guaranteed to get you anywhere late. Inquire of Mr. Chapman. A browse through past literary sections reveals cleverness and originality, (although it must also be said that some contributions totally lack these qualities). Two good selections are: Un Petit Poeme C’etait unjeune homme named Sam Jonah Qui venait all the way from boulogne. Now Sam met a gal Mais ca M’est egal Et peut-ctre this’ll go in the CORONA. Priscilla Chadborune ’38 1937 CORONA Two’s a Crowd Before I heard the doctors tell The dangers of a kiss, I had considering kissing you The nearest thing to bliss. But now I know Biology And sit and sigh and moan. Six million mad bacteria— And I thought we were alone! 1941 CORONA In a few weeks the doors will close on Bridgton High School for the last time. After nearly a century of service, BHS will be replaced by the demands of progress. Ours is the last class to graduate from Bridgton High, and we sincerely hope that this last volume of the CORONA has been a worthy tribute to our school. 97 IDENTIFICATION OF DIVISION PAGES Curriculum 1916 Faculty: Miss Ruth Parker, Miss Anna Hemming, Miss Ellen Harding, Mr. Herbert Cole. Wells, ’39 ABOLITION OF FOOTBALL After a series of unsuccessful seasons during which only a small proportion of the student body has shown any interest whatsoever in the sport, it would seem that football is out of place in Bridgton High School. During the past season about fifteen boys were accustomed to appear at the field for practice and perhaps half of this number would have preferred to have lieen elsewhere. So to state the facts bluntly, out of an enrollment of one hun- dred and sixty-five pupils possibly eight boys were really interested in football and desired an opportunity to play. But the interest of those eight boys gradually les- sened after being bruised and knocked around by the teams of schools repre- sented by larger and heavier squads. And why shouldn’t their interest wane? They were fighting for a losing cause in which there was little hope for support or aid. They suffered criticism and ridicule when they were doing the best they could. So, we ask, why continue football for the sole benefit of a few who are not given a real opportunity to enjoy it ? Furthermore, continued defeats have a decided effect on the character of a boy. He is soon going to lose all confidence in himself if time and again he sees himself overpowered by an opponent and into his mind will come the thought that perhaps he isn't cpiite as capable as the other fellow. Football as a sport is ideal in that it teaches a boy to take care of himself, to have fear for no one, and to take hard knocks without a murmur. But we be- lieve that more harm than good results from football as carried on under the con- ditions present in Bridgton High School. Henry A.
