CORONA 1964 It is our hope that this Corona will serve you as an accurate pictoral his- tory of the 1963-64 year at Bridgton High School and that in the years to come it will continue to bring back pleasant memories of your high school days. The Corona Staff Editor-in-Chief. . Business Manager Faculty Advisor . Published by Senior Class Bridgton High School Bridgton, Maine .Dorothy Evans . . Larry Glatz . R. Craig Gray Printed by American Yearbook Company Cambridge, Maryland CONTENTS DEDICATION PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE FACULTY SENIORS CLASSES ORGANIZATIONS ATHLETICS LITERARY ALUMNI ADVERTISING - yCl It is with great pleasure that through this dedication we, the Class of 1964, can express to some extent our heartfelt grati- tude for all that Mrs. Cook has done for us in the past four years. Our high esteem for this dedicated teacher is in part due to the sincere friendship which she has extended to us. She is genuinely concerned with the welfare of each of us, and no problem of ours was ever too big or too small to receive her attention. Her advice and council on all matters have always been sound and helpful. In class she has tried to bring out the best in us in our aca- demic work and in our attitudes toward life and other people. Her tremendous school spirit has served to inspire the same in us and to encourage our efforts to help our class and our school. Her support of many of our extracurricular activities , whether sports, music, clubs, or fund - raising, has given us the desire to participate in them and to do our best in them. And thus, we feel that her interest in us and her efforts in our be- half have been very important in enabling us to successfully reach this educational goal in our lives and in encouraging us to set even greater goals for the future; and for these reasons we are dedicating the 1964 CORONA to Mrs. Hazel Cook . 2 You will soon be alumni of Bridgton High School. During the last four years you have realized many experiences in your association with teachers and fellow students. May the attitudes learned, the concepts realized, and the skills developed serve you well in the future. In the crucial struggle being waged today for the minds and souls of men, two rival philosophies exist. One is a philosophy which considers man a slave of the state. The other is a phil- osophy inviting free men to govern themselves. No one knows what the future will bring. However, this I know -- that God planned for man freedom and peace; not serfdom and war. Your future holds many unknowns, many changes, and many challenges. We hope that you have the fundamental knowledge and skill enabling you to face the future with confidence, cour- age, and determination that you will make a contribution to a better world. May each of you find that place in life that only you can fill The faculty join with me in offering our heartiest congratu- lations on your forthcoming graduation. You may be assured of our continuing interest and faith in each of you. We invite you to return often and share your friendship and experiences with us. Fred M. Crouse Principal MR. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is an organization of secondary school students who are elected by their school chapter councils on the basis of their scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Our local chapter is called the Triangle Chapter because it has members from three towns, Bridgton, Harrison, and Naples. Mrs. Cook and Mr. Crouse are our advisors. Elections of new members are held each fall and spring. A certain percentage of the Senior and Junior classes may be elected as members of the Honor Society as well as Sophomore probationary members. All eligible candidates and members must main- tain an average of 87. The Triangle Chapter sponsors an alumni get-together each Christmas vacation. We sponsor a gym dance to raise funds. We hold joint meetings with the Student Coun- cil sometimes and attend the state convention of the National Honor Society in the spring. Members elected in fall 1963. SEATED: D. BOYS’ BASKETBALL Coach Kilborn's Varsity Blackhawks were certainly an exciting ball club to watch this year. Though their record was 8 wins and 9 losses, with a little luck at various times, this would have been a highly successful year. Throughout the season team play stood out along with hustle and spirit. High scorers were Dick Dudley with 314 and Lyndon Curtis with 270, the co-captains, and Lynn Wood with 178. Kenton Richardson represented B.H.S. at the regional foulshooting contest. In the last game of the season the team broke the school record with a score of 113-81 against North Berwick. Coach Stewart's Junior Varsity squad had a successful season, compiling a record of 8 wins and 6 losses. Standouts for the team were Tommy Tarr, Gary Mclver, and Danny Mac- Donald, aided alternately by 4 varsity players. JUNIOR VARSITY: FIRST ROW: B. White; G. Mclver; D. Macdonald; R. Graham; R. LITERARY DOWNHILL The first runner has left the starting gate. The other racers watch as he gathers speed 1 - and gathers his powerful frame into a downhill crouch. The first control gate looms into sight. He decides to turn above it and drop like lightning through it. His skiis protest as he forces them to turn. A fine spray of snow billows behind him, and all he can hear is the rush of the wind as he pummels downward. His legs ache with the strain of keeping his feet under him. The second gate is easily gained and a treacher- ous mogul field lies behind him. Quickly his skiis are forced into a chattering turn and the speed decreases. His legs look like shock absorbers as they recoil with each bump. The next gate is set at an odd angle forcing him uphill. Using every ounce of strength within him, he poles furiously and negotiates the next gate with a mad frenzy of motion. The finish is in sight. All that remains is the icy schuss to the bottom. Again he crouches low and sets his face with an expression of defiance. Speed gathers until the racer’s form is just a blur on the slope. Through the finish he dashes with a fanatical burst of speed. He has done it; he has conquered the mountain. Bruce Taylor JED A foolish young man named Jed Started out to paint the town red. He punched a cop Who spun like a top And Jed awoke in a jail house bed. James Lewis WHO GOT STUFFED? Thanksgiving day came with a blast of cold wind And a storm of light fluffy snow. We gathered around the table for twelve And gave thanks for what's reaped and what’s sowed. All eyes stared cravingly at the plentiful meal Spread out on the table before; All mouths received every bit they could steal, 'Til no one could eat any more. The platters were empty, not one morsel left, Not even a crumb for the pet. We were filled to the brim, had loosened our belts, 'Though not with any regret. But the whole atmosphere of this pleasurable scene Was invaded by the doubt of us twelve; For we'd all like to know who it was that got stuffed. The turkey or our own little selves? Kathy Beal SKIBUNNY There was a skibunny named May Who skied from the top one day. It's easy,” she said, But then caught an edge And awoke in a cast the next day. Pat Cushman SPRING The other morn as I awoke, I knew that it was spring. The sun shown and a robin spoke, And I wanted to sing. The brooks were running in the road. The birds were in the trees; I heard a rooster as he crowed. A song was on the breeze. This is a beautiful season. As I hear the bells ring, I think there must be a reason; I guess because it's spring. Susan Roberts LOST DAYS My heart was filled with lingering memories; It prompted me to go for a ride. I drove by the old pond and cabin And decided to step inside. I opened the door and I knew at once That no one had been there since then, For there in the corner lay all our lost days, Shattered by the cold winter's wind. Janet Haggett A HUNTING HE WILL GO There was a sportsman named Joe Who was very much on the go. One day he went hunting With thoughts of a bunting, But shot off his little left toe. James Flint 61 On November twenty-second In nineteen hundred sixty-three Our handsome young President was slain By a bullet from a sniper's gun. It was with shock we heard the news For in a country so great as ours Who could have thought that a deed so crude Could be done by any man. Dismay, despair, disgust were what we felt; Fear too we had for quite a while For lives and for our nation dear; And regret is in our hearts to stay. This deed, of course, set us thinking Of all that our leader had done. It also made us realize The world-wide respect he'd won. He was a church and family man, A hero from the last World War, A successful, respected politician, And a good and honorable man. 62 Lewis W. Andrews Haven F.
