Editor -in - Chief Karen L , Martikainen EDITOR-IN-CHIEF ..... KAREN MARTIKAINEN BUSINESS MANAGER . . . DANIEL RICHARDSON FACULTY ADVISOR . . . .MR. CLYDE FOLSOM PUBLISHED by SENIOR CLASS of BRIDGTON HIGH SCHOOL PRINTED by AMERICAN YEARBOOK COMPANY CAMBRIDGE MARYLAND , 'Meath 3 I , -ig , ' -l , It is with great pride that we, the graduating class of 1963, dedicate our Corona to Mr. Fred Crouse. During the past two years, Mr. Crouse has served as our principal, counselor, and friend. Our memories of Bridgton High School are enriched by his sincere interest in us . 2 f I 'f 1 'if A f 'fumemaviam Dear Lord, please may we speak with you If only for a rninuteg Because you see now heaven has A special loved one in it. Thy tender loving hands have reached Down from your place above And taken from this world below A dear one that We loved. Her smile so friendly and so warm, Her voice so sweet and pure, Her everlasting love of fun Will in our hearts endure. L So keep her safely, Lord, We pray While in that far-off Land, And tell her that we feel her near, Our cherished friend, Dianne. 3 Superintendent's Message You have grown immeasurably since that Wednesday morning in September 1959 when you first entered Bridgton High School. There has been physical growth -- apparent to all, especially coaches, who found you big enough to win a place on the variousteams, and parents, who found you first growing big enough to wear their clothes, then outgrowing them. There has been mental growth -- not always so apparent but noticeable to those who were observing ashyou struggled to meet deadlines for reports and exams and as you took your N.M.S.A., P.S.A.T., S.A.T., and the rest of the alphabetical tests. And finally, there has been a growth in maturity -- an imperceptible change from harum-scarum scatter-brain ideas to an ability to make judgements and con- ceive plans that are viewed with respect by your elders . You have been pre- paring gradually to take your place in the adult world. I have confidence in your ability and faith that you will be able to cope with a world that becomes more complex each day. I lmow you will continue your growth and be a credit to your parents and your school. All of us, teachers, parents, and townspeople, wish you well. I shall miss the friendly wave you have given as you passed my window. Superintendent Chester R . Parker 4 if-liUm 4+ T T ? ii Principal'-5 Message You will soon be graduated from Bridgton High School. The diploma which you will receive at graduation is symbolic of your successful completion of your secondary education. You have realized many experiences during these last four years. We are hopeful that the skills, knowledge, and attitudes gained will serve you well in the future. This is not the end of the educational road for any of you. This is merely one more rung in the ladder of educational progress leading to success and happiness You have only the beginning of a real education. Education never stops. The good work of the world is accomplished principally by people who dedicate them- selves to a distant goal. Weeks, months, years may pass, but success is measured in ultimate achievement not in time spent. Men and women who hope to make a real contribution to life must learn to educate and re-educate them- selves periodically or they are doomed to mediocrity. The faculty joins with me in congratulating you upon your past accomplish- ments and wishing you success and happiness in your future endeavors . As Alumni, we hope that you will return often and share your experiences with us. Fred M. Crouse Principal 5 i R sa .. -sr. r .gg sws . . Qi. Q 'R Q X -as as-:S -X . - -it gl s S s XR? xiii MR. We are proud of our class participation in all of Bridgton High School 's 'extracur- ricular activities. Our class election was held on September 7, 1962, and our class officers were elected as follows: Linda Barker, President, Larry Newth, Vice-President, Carol Vachowski, Secretary, and Vaughn Kilborn, Treasurer. A school election was held last spring to chose Student Council members for this year, those elected to represent our class were Andrew Sanborn, Dan- ny Richardson, Lorna Hudson, Ray Cross and Deirdre Ryerson. One member, Maynard Smith, was elected this year. We would like to extend our thanks to members of the Junior, Sopho- more, and Freshman classes for the support given to our class sponsored , activities. ToMr. Crouse, our guidance director this year, we wish to express deepest appreciation for all that he has done to insure us of the best possible counsel in all of our future plans. Our class advisor, Mr. Spear, has been of greatest assistance in guiding our class through the Senior year. Respectfully Submitted, Carol Vachowski, Secretary Class '63' The Junior Class entered the school year with an enrollment of fifty-five students. The class advisors were Mr. Folsom and Mr. Kilborn. At the end of our sophomore year, the following student council members were elected: Kathy Beal, Mary-Lee Lane, Nancy Knight, Jeffrey Pike, and Mary Croteau, who served as secretary of the Student Council. We are proud to say that these members served our class well in this organization. During the 1962-63 magazine drive, Judy Hatch, Mary-Lee Lane, and Margaret Miller sold the greatest number of magazines for our class. For money-making projects, the Junior Class sponsored a food sale, and a Christmas gym dance. Our Junior Prom was held on May 10. Mary Croteau was elected Foliage Queen, and as a reward for winning, she spent an exciting weekend in Boston. Mary and Trudy Mowatt were nominated as Homecoming Queen candidates. Cheryl Walker Secretary Entering this schoolyear, the class of 1965 had an enrollment of ninety- seven. The class participated in many of the school activities. The class elected the following people to represent us on the Student Council: Joann Osgood, Paul Barker, Bruce Cole, and Phil Harmon. It is from the inside that comes the cheery smile and bright personality. For example, when Tod came to school for the first time, everyone considered him the homeliest, ugli- est boy in the whole school. However, when they got to know him, they found that he was the friendliest boy and had the best personality of anyone at school. He had true inside beauty. Nature is full of examples of beauty within. One of these is the bird family. Many birds appear to be ugly and completely useless. But, they do have some beauty, again, it is within. It is from the inside that come their beautiful songs. Another beauty that they possess is the talent or skill, to cheer people up and bring out their inside beauty . A lump of coal is another example of internal beauty. Who would ever think that, by looking at an ugly, bleak lump of coal that a beautiful diamond would come from within. This is, perhaps, the most astounding beauty within and ugliness without! There was an angleworm -- Bill, He lived on a window sill Until one day He got in the Way And he never made out his will. Virginia Lackee THE SCHUSS OF THE TENSLITTLE SCHUSSBOOMERS Ten little schussboomers were skiing fast and fine, One missed a turn and then there were nine. Nine little schussboomers were playing with fate, One broke a ski and then there were eight. Eight little schussboomers were dream- ing of heaven, One really jumped and then there were seven. Seven little schussboomers were doing fancy tricks, One didn't signal and then there were six. Six little schussboomers were skiing to the jive, One caught an edge and then there were five . Janet Martikainen Said the turtle to the rabbit, you may Find it hard to believe what I sayg You will think it absurd, But I give you my word, They fined me for speeding today. Bonnie Chadbourne Five little schussboomers were having fun galore, One hit some ice and then there were four. Four little schussboomers were skiing as fast's could be, One hit a sitzmark and then there were three. Three little schussboomers were skiing straight and true, One hit a pine tree and then there were two. Two little schussboomers were brim full of fun, One found a girl friend and then there was one. One little schussboomer was quite safe and sound, He skis safely to this day -- and he's still around-. The members of the National Honor Society are elected by the chapter council, con sisting of the principal and five other faculty members. Membership is based upon scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Eligible candidates and members must also maintain an average of 87. Mrs. Cook and M r. The Safety Council members have taken various tests utilizing the facilities which test field vision, distance, judgment, and color vision. The Council sponsored a Reliability Run, and, in the spring, conducted a Safe Driver's Rodeo. Karen Martikainen Secretary Club The varsity B Club is comprised of those athletic letter winners who wish to continue their service to the school beyond the playing fields. The purpose of the club is to instill the student body and the faculty with a high level of school spirit and interest, and to improve the athletic facilities at Bridgeton High School. Reactivated under coaches Kilborn and Goodson, the B Club sought to uphold its purpose in various ways. This year's more important projects were the direction of the Homecoming Weekend, selling of basketball programs, and the purchasing of much needed athletic equipment. Henry ,TEAMS The Boys' Ski Team this year completed its most successful season in the past few years. The team, con- sisting of only one senior, one junior, and several ' sophomores and freshmen, placed second in a field of thirteen schools at the Western Maine Regional Finals held this year at Tn ,, Kents Hill. Because of their strong finish in that meet, the ski team members qualified for the State of Maine Championships, which were held at Auburn on February 8 and 9. In the State of Maine Championships, Bridgton placed seventh in a field of nine schools defeating both the Eastern Maine and Northern Maine Regional Champions. We were especially pleased with this fine record, because the team was hampered in its efforts by the loss of three of its mem bers due to injuries early in the season. Next season, when all except one of these skiers return, Bridgton High School should be strongly represented on the ski slopes of Western Maine. The B.H.S. Girls' Ski Team, coached by Mr. Fred Ross, had a successful season, this year. The girls competed in two regular meets and the Girls' State Meet, held at Sunday River Skiway in Bethel on February 16. Each class was represented on the team this year -- Seniors: Lorna Hudson, Eleanor Martikainen, Carol Vachowski, and Deirdre Ryersong Juniors: Mary-Lee Laneg Sophomores: Cynthia Pike and Sharon Ryerson, Freshmenslanet Martikainen. The team held regular practices at Pleasant Mountain each Monday and Wednesday afternoon immediately after school. Special practices were sometimes called on Saturdays when no meets were scheduled. Wiley, Treas, 5 Reminilscence of Mrs. Oberg The old order changeth, yielding place to new, And God fulfills himself in many ways, Lest one good custom should corrupt the world. Many changes have taken place in the last twenty-five years in the field of educa- tion and especially in home economics. The role played by family members in this modern, topsy-turvy world has changed. There are more working mothers, and commuting fathersg there is a shift from a producing to a consuming unit, there is more mechanization in the householdg there are more leisure hours, more elderly peopleg there is the increasing emphasis upon higher standards of education, espe- cially in mathematics, foreign languages, and the sciences. Everyone feels pressed for time lest the things to be done cannot: be finished. Yet there is one truth that re- mains constant: the family unit is, has been, and always will be all important. Twenty-five years is a long time, yet it passes quickly if a person is engaged in work he enjoys. My association over the years with girls is a happy memory, which I shall always cherish. When thinking back to the class of '38, my girls had the same ambitions and dreams as those of today, their ultimate goal being to build a happy home and family lifeg and I like to believe that our homemaking courses had some influence in this di- rection. We met in surroundings far less attractive than our present homemaking room, yet the girls came to the gym, so-called, climbed two flights of stairs into our rather barren-looking rooms, ready and eager to start a sewing project on our old treadle sewing machines, or have a cooking lesson, using the old wood stove, oil stove, or individual electric plates placed on a long table. At times personal problems, child care, and home improvement were discussed in a quiet, unhurried atmosphere. Enthusiasm was never lacking. Class of '38, I salute you for a job well done, as evidenced by daughters of many of you whom Ihave had in my classes, they are attractive, lovable, lively girls, ready and willing to carry on this most important of all careers: the building of a happy home. You and they have all helped to keep me young at heart over the years . Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years . People grow old only by deserting their ideals. Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. My wish for all of you is to reach for the stars, keep your enthusiasm, have courage when things look dark, and get as much joy as possible out of this game of living. 3555355945 at 5-SES E Mrs. C.
