Text from Pages 1 - 72 of the 1956 volume:

« We, the Annual Staff, proudly present our 1956 Corona. With our school year swiftly closing, we find ourselves hold- ing closely to our hearts the fond memo- ries of Bridgton High School. In later years, while turning these pages, if you should recall the many smiles, sorrows, and dreams of'56, we shall be content, knowing that we had done the thing we were called upon to do. The Corona Staff Published by the SENIORS of BRIDGTON HIGH SCHOOL Bridgton, Maine Printed in THE UNITED STATES of AMERICA TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY Dallas, Texas Oecfication We, the Class of 1956, fondly dedicate this issue of the Corona to Mrs. Joan Hotch kiss, who, for the past two and a half years, has patiently devoted her services in English as well as various other activities We are sincerely grateful for her help ful guidance and friendship. nncipa. The record of events presented in this book by the Class of 1956 is a reminder of the many experiences which a modem secondary school provides for today's teenagers. These experiences, if given in a teach- able situation, are valuable in developing proper attitudes, skills, and personalities. A teachable situation depends upon adequate facilities and equipment, a good teacher that stimulates the mind, and an inter- ested and responsive student. We feel the Corona for 1956 records such a situation. Therefore, congratulations to the Class of '56 for a job well done and for contributing so much to Bridgton High School. The ideals that we hope you have found here will serve you in good stead for whatever the future may bring. As alumni, you have additional duties in life that will carry you away from home. The experiences of today should remind you that only strict observance of what is right and good results in a full and happy life. Good luck to you all. Clifford P. T'ootball The B. H. S. football squad, consisting of about 25 boys, turned out for an early fall practice. The team was under the direction of coaches Austin and Stevens. The boys got off to a poor start by losing to So. Paris. A much improved team lost its second garpe to Jay in a hard-fought battle. A powerful Lisbon outclassed them for their final defeat. Bridgton's first victory was over Wilton. A spectacular play was Berry running 81 yards for a touch- down at the opening kickoff of the second half. The second victory was over Rockland in a high-scoring game. The Bridgton eleven broke the Farmington jinx of the past three years to gain its third victory. The team beat Livermore Falls in the final game, giving them a 4-3 record. Chuck Berry was elected Captain by the members of the team for 1955. Boys receiving letters were: C. Berry, R. Johns, G. And left me with my solitude - alone; I would not have the standards to comply And endless worldly troubles to condone. Could I abide in nature's simple state, And watch the world from eyes of one at peace; T'would be acceptance of a kindly fate To let this discontent forever cease. Shall it forever be that I must hide My true self; and all that for which I hope Be unfulfilled, and endlessly denied True bliss and happiness in my world's scope? These thoughts and longings shall forever be Within myself for all eternity. Janet Tracy If I could write a sonnet I would try To write a poem so beautiful to me; That all the world would read it and reply, A girl with talent like that was meant to be. But I can't take two words and make them rhyme. Or write of life and love and nature too - - To tell the world of feelings so devine; God didn't give me that great task to do. I’d rather read the works of other men Than dare attempt to write a poem of mine. I shouldn't even know where to begin. So 1 enjoy the beauty, friend, of thine. So ends this little sonnet I derived; At least no one can say 1 haven't tried. Ellen Greene LIMERICKS There once was a girl named Faye Who led all the boys far away But then she met Stein And had a good time And now 'tis Faye that's astray. Keith Kilborn Audrey Preble There was a young lady named Marge Who backed into the garage Said her father, My dear. I'll take over from here That door lias noHf been enlarged. Nancy March There once was a man called Steve And like all others he had a pet peeve Study halls are a riot And no price could buy it But he really wouldn't want to leave. PREMEDITATED MURDER Little Susie was hurt. So hurt in fact that the pain of her suffering gave her a great amount of agony. She had been hit by an automobile and had broken all her ribs, one of which had punctured her left lung. She lay on the ground writhing, her chest bleeding like a fountain of red water. She screamed and cold chills ran up and down the backs of the on- lookers. The woman who stood watching became nauseated at the sight and turned away crying. I knelt beside her small body and tried to comfort her, but it was of no avail for she could not recognize me. I was torn with grief, for the smallest member of our family had to die - - there was no hope. Then 1 decided that I must do the deed. I took her up in my trembling arms and carried her writhing body into the house. Once inside, I broke down. I wept profusely and walked blindly to the cellar stairs. I went down and laid Susie’s body on the table. She screeched and looked at me with pitiful eyes that seemed to know what I planned. I tore myself away and ran upstairs for my pistol. When I returned, she was writhing and screaming in a last attempt to get away. I took her off the table and laid her body on the floor and through tear-filled eyes begged her forgiveness. Then I stood up and lifted my gun and fired--------three shots into her small head. She was still. I fell to my knees and wept over her body. I had killed my cat.
