While Douglas Goodyear was on a tour in France, he wrote his mother from Cannes saying that he had saved a young lady from drowning. His mother immediately started the story that her son was a hero and a champion swimmer. Unfortunately, Doug was unable to swim a stroke On his retum to America he found a hero's welcome awaiting him. In trying to live up to his mother's false stories about him, Doug was forced to enter a swimming contest against a true champion swimmer. When the race was about three weeks away, Doug disappeared. He returned, however, about an hour before the race began and swam to victory. Under the careful direction of Miss Pratt, our play was a great success. lt was presented at the Mayfair Theater on November 24, with a full house. Everyone fully enjoyed the many rehearsals and we all had a good time. We wish to thank Miss Pratt for all the time and patience she gave us. Eleanor Ring '54 4' Standing: H. Daraich, A. FOOTBALL Irregular practices were held throughout the summer with formal sessions beginning the first of August. The only loss was to Farmington under the lights at Hippach Field, Chuck Berry led Bridgton to a traditional first game victory over South Paris with 20 and 25 yard touchdown runs. Sanborn brought the score to 14-7 with two conversions, while Merrill and Chase stood out defensively. The next game proved to be an easy touch as we ran over Wells High 47-0. Johns, Berry and Moulton each scored twice with brilliant runs. A Daraich to Merrill pass accounted for the other TD. Sanborn booted four extra points and Ward went over for the other. Bridgton ran up its third straight victory with a 35-7 victory at Lisbon. Johns and Berry accounted for four Bridgton TD's, with Moulton carrying over for the fifth. Sanbom made good on all five conversions. Bridgton continued its winning ways in Class FF by defeating Wilton Academy 33-13. Berry and Johns each scored twice in the first half to assure Bridgton's win. P. Ward carried across for the fifth TD. Sanbom made the extra point while A. Ward stood out defensively. Bridgton ran over Richmond 35-0 as Johns, Moulton and Merrill each scored once. The play of the game was when Berry raced up 95 yards on the opening play of the game. Sanbom conver- ted five times successfully, Farmington upset Bridgton's hitherto undefeated eleven 29-7 under the lights at Hippach Field Moulton carried over for Bridgton's only TD with Sanborn converting. Farmington's defense was outstanding. Bridgton closed its successful season by completely outclassing Livermore Falls 34-0. Smith, GIRLS' BASKETBALL At the first practice in November, about twenty-eight girls turned out. After carefully observing the candidates, Coach Lord picked the first eight varsity members - E. Rollins fCaptainy, B. Edison, C. Swanson and N. Cooper as forwards, and B. Hill, L. Gyure, P. Hebb and B. Dodge as guards. Captain Rollins was high scorer with an average of twenty-six points per game, making a total of 338 points, followed by C. Swanson with 170 and B. Edison with 84. B. Hill did a fine job at stealing the ball away, aggressiveness and keeping the team spirit up. L. Gyure was steady and always with her man. P. Hebb was good on rebounds and did great work bringing the ball up the floor. Much credit goes to B. Dodge and N. Cooper who helped us out in many tight spots. With five varsity mem- bers graduating this Iune, we will depend on them next season. Much appreciation is given to Mrs. Lord who spent a lot of time helping us through a successful sea- son. Pauline Palmer was our manager. The IV's won three games which shows promise for next year. Daraich was the winning pitcher striking out nine opposers. Bridgton lost a close battle to S. Paris by the score of 9-7. Bridgton had the necessary runnerS but cound not push them across at the right times. Bridgton walloped Livermore Falls 18-4 in a District IV qualified game. Berry, Libby and Durgin led the winners with four, three and three hits respectively. Daraich pitched a fine ball game striking out sixteen men. Johns homered for the winners. Kennett pushed across ten runs in the first three innings to top Bridgton 10-3. Johns and Welch led the losers with three and two hits respectively. Cockburn started the game with San- born coming on the last of the third to finish up. Bridgton lost a close slug-fest to S. Paris 13-9. Libby led the winners with three hits. We collected twelve hits, but a leaky defense contributed to many S. Paris runs. Bridgton triumphed over Mexico High in another District IV qualifying game by a score of 6-1. Bridgton collected only five hits but made every one of them count. Daraich pitched fine ball for Bridgton, striking out thirteen. Norway's Richie Dyer threw a fine one hit ball game at Bridgton to lead his team to a 5-1 triumph. Davis pitched good ball for the losers after allowing four runs in the first inning. A. Douglas hit a long nip1e for Bridgton's only hit. Bridgton whacked Mechanic Falls 9-3 in a District IV quarter final game. Daraich allowed only five hits while striking out eight McFalls' batters. The game was strictly a team triumph with everybody playing fine ball. Durgin led the winners with three hits. Bridgton won over Norway in an exciting District IV semi-final game. J. Welch sacrificed Merrill with a winning run in the last of the ninth. We made our only three hits count for three runs. Bridgton lost a heartbreaking 3-2 ball game to Richmond under the lights of Pettingill Park. As this game was a District IV final, it eliminated us from the Western Maine Championship. Everybody played fine ball but we were not able to get across for necessary runs. Daraich threw fine ball all the way for the losers. Eddie Durgin had the top batting average for the year, followed closely by Chuck Berry. Much appreciation is given to Mr. Stevens. W. Sanborn '. N 'u Standing: Manager D. Lingley, W. Campbell, R. Bridgton captured the Class B meet at Wilton over host Wilton, Stearns, Fryeburg and Buckfield. Moulton won the Ski-Meister Award which is given to the meet's top point-getter. This qualified Bridgton for the Class A title meet at Auburn. Bridgton's ski forces took fifth place competing with tough opponents Gould, Edward Little, Farmington, Rumford, Andove. and Wilton at Rumford, Bridgton would have done much better but bad falls in the slalom event lost many valuable points.
