' v , . , . as ' yr SOUTH BRIDGTON Years ago before the town of Br1dgton was lncorporated 1n fact even before It was known by the name of Pond1cherry an old stage coach road went from the coast near Portland up along Sebago Lake and across to the Wh1te Mountams About five m1les from Sebago Lake along the old stage coach road South Br1dgton 1S now located It was one of the first parts of Br1dgton to be settled Three of the oldest places were the Foster place near what IS now called Foster Pond two m1les West of th1s 1S the Ingalls farm and a mlle south of these formlng the po1nt of a txrangle was the place set tled by one of the Perley brothers Th1s place 1S now the well known Flve F1elds Apple Farm Another old farm st1ll stands where the stagecoach pas sengers sometlmes put up over n1ght When the narrow guage ra1lway from Harr1son to H1ram was be1ng bu1lt there was qu1te a controversy between the Fosters and the Ingalls fam1l1es as to where lt was to go The Fosters wanted the ra1lway to pass near the1r gr1st m1ll and the Ingalls wanted It to go near the1r box and shook factory The Ingalls won out and the ra1lway went through at the foot of the1r h1ll Th1s ra1lroad carrled the ma1l for many years from the Junctlon at H1ram to the l1tt1e post office at the general store Whlch was a meetlng place al most every even1ng for the men of the communxty who gathered there to dlscuss crops and settle the affa1rs of the natlon About a m1le east of the Foster Nelghborhood IS a h1ll known locally as K1ng H111 Its name comes from the fact that there were on that h1ll some extra large DIUCS marked for the K1ng of England to be used for Shlp masts These tall pmes were used as landmarks by wh1ch the steamboats on Sebago Lake set the1r course when steer1ng for the mouth of the Songo Rlver There was much dlscusslon at the tlme these trees were cut Just a few years back Many people cla1med that they should not be cut because they were such old landmarks and because they held the K1ng s seal There are several ponds 1n the v1c1n1ty of South Br1dgton namely Holts pond 1S noted for 1ts p1ckerel Foster for 1ts bass Peabody for 1tS salmon and Adams IS stocked w1th trout although 1n late years few large ones have been caught In South Br1dgton 1S located the only stone bear trap known 1n the State of Ma1ne There 1S a tra1l of stone markers leadlng up over Fltch s H111 to lt from the old Perley bu1ld1ngs The trap 1S made of large slabs of stone set up l1ke a box It works 1n the same way as a box trap w1th a barred door that drops down closlng the entrance when the ba1t IS moved A l1ttle dlstance beyond the trap an old stone quarry 1S located where the slabs of stone were cut for the trap and for the foundat1ons of many of the first homesteads I have been to both of these many t1mes and It IS an 1nterest1ng Slght to see 1f you l1ke mounta1n cl1mb1ng Bald Pate s another small mounta1n ln the v1c1n1ty of South Br1dgton From the summ1t of lt you can see a good part of Sebago Lake and some of Long Lake 1f It 1S a clear day Many lakes and ponds are to be seen from Bald Pate 1n many d1rect1ons There 1S sa1d to be an old Indlan spr1ng on the slde of the mounta1n towards what 1S now the settlement of H1lls1de al though nobody has been able to find lt for many,many years It IS Sald to be located half way between the barn at Camp Accomac and the h1ghest polnt of the mounta1n At the present tlme South Br1dgton has a small llbrary mamtalned 1n part by a Perley Memor1al fund Also the Congregatmnal church of South Brlgt ton IS supported by a fund establ1shed by the same famlly All th1s goes to show that even a small settlement 1n the country may have had an 1nterest mg h1story Davld F1eld 52 Foster, Peabody, and Adams. ' ' ' I . l I H . 7 . 3 ' THE SKIING BUG Johnny a chap who l1ved 1n the c1ty had an lmpulse to go Skllng H1s g1rl frlend had mentloned 1n a casual sort of way qulte a few t1m6S about the Joy of sk111ng She had also Sald that he hadn t llved untll he had skled Just once These remarks had kmdled a spark 1n hlm He declded that lt was about txme he trled th1s sport He 1nqu1red at dlfferent sources to find out what klnd of equlpment was sultable to use After many 1nqu1rxes bemg a frugal type of fellow looked for markdowns on skls but there Just weren t any This of course was 1m posslble 1n the helght of sk1 season Thus he reluctantly paid the retaxl pr1ces of fifty four dollars for boots forty n1ne dollars for skxs and fifteen dollars for sk1 pants He took th1S apparel to the car and discovered that he needed a Skl rack whlch lnvolved twelve bucks more During the next few days he pxcked up wool socks a wlndbreaker ski glasses and a pa1r of poles When he flnlshed on th1s buylng spree he dlscovered that xt would take a year to pay for lt all By then what would happen well everything would be worn out A doctor gave advxce on broken bones fractures and a number of other th1ngs Other frlends of h1S told hxm of the broken bones they had gotten on thelr first efforts 1n the art of sknng These comments dlscouraged hlm but he was urged on when he heard that there was nothmg l1ke a weekend of ghdmg over the snow 1n God s country H1s g1rl frrend accompan1ed h1m one beautlful sunny mormng as they Pleasant Mountaln Johnny had a squeamish feelmg in h1s stomach as he gazed at what seemed to be narrow slopes and trails His glrl frxend not1ced he was turnmg a l1ttle green around the edges and sald Don t worry The slopes are really qulte wlde At the foot of the mountaln they turned 1nto the road lead1ng to the hut He felt as 1f the mountam was Just wa1t1ng for another v1ct1m to arrlve After h1s g1rl frlend had buckled on his sk1s for he was to weak to he started out but fell flat Then remembering that one of h1s kmd frxends had told hmm he had better take a lesson or he would be sorry so he sought out a sk1 mstructor Durlng the next hour of tra1n1ng he became an expert snow plower He then declded that he was good enough to try the tow Sidehng up to the tow he watched It sp1n by and wondered Just how he could conquer thxs demon H1s attempts were unsuccessful He would grab on so tlght that he was spun 1n a heap 1nto the snow or he would get tangled up in h1s sk1s Fnally he made It and sped up the mountain slde At the top he trxed to get off but he couldn t H1s Jacket was wound tightly around the rope He d1dn't have tlme to th1nk He Just held on The machlne suddenly stopped and he opened h1s eyes A llttle plece of strlng hitched to the controls stopped the equlpment He was saved Thankful for this good fortune he Skled out onto the slope He looked breathlessly at the scenery then down at the people who looked l1ke ants crawl1ng around at the foot of the mountaln H1s heart began to s1nk but he started out praylng w1th all h1s mlght He whlzzed down the slope l1ke a pro and soon gamed confidence as he neared h1s lady frlend But alas he was too confident because he slid the remamxng flfty yards on the seat of h1s pants Well anyway he had caught the bug and was rar1ng to try to conquer the mountaln There was one more thmg he was gomg to add to h1S equ1pment and that was a dollar plllow Christ1ne Swanson 54 started out for Bridgton.
