Rucker It is with the utmost respect that the Class of 1961 dedicates the Alpha to Robert W. Rucker, a most devoted member of the teaching profession. We are grateful for his numerous years of educational service and his countless contributions to his field and the entire educational process. In- spired by his profound scholarship and constant professional manner, the Class of 1961 wishes him to realize its appreciation. May the sense of a successful career bring Mr. Rucker much satisfaction and happiness. WESTON BARTLETT Sports Editor JOAN LUNDGREN Literary Editor ROBERT MAGNER Photography Editor PRISCILLA YOUNG Secretary MARIE SCOLARO Editor-in-Chief CYNTHIA QUIRK Art and Layout Editor CAROL REYNOLDS Treasurer STAFF AND FOREWORD In my hands, I hold the future This year marks the end of an era in the annals of the growth of our college. More than that, however, this year marks a beginning, the start of what we hope will be a better future. The growth seen at Bridgewater State College this year far surpasses the growth of any single year previous. Whether this growth is put to use wisely depends on the future students. Since the ability of these students depends on us as the future teachers, we, therefore, hold in our hands the fate and destiny of this new era. This is an important and ominous responsibility. It is towards this gpal that we have been striving and shall continue to strive. We, the staff, hope you will enjoy your yearbook for its memories, but more than this, we hope you will look to it as an inspiration in the future. It is my sincerest hope that this record will be for all a pre- dominantly pleasant one, to the end that this copy of Alpha will be a happy monument to the past, a nostalgic direction post pointing to four years of sincere effort and honest fervor. It is sad to note that on Commencement Day you will meet together as a class for the last time. A thousand different purposes may call you to as many corners of our world, to distant places in which you will subsist, at least in part, on your capacity to recall the past. Alpha, then, presents, almost in capsule form, a potpourri of happy far off things, like magic casements opening on The work of Fancy, or some happy tone Of meditation, slipping in between The beauty coming and the beauty gone. May it mean much to you as the years roll on to their end, for it is only too true as Dickens phrased it, the days of girls and boys can never come back again. My fervent wish for each of you is that the good and happy friendships of college days may persevere through the years ahead. Rest assured that your Alma Mater will be proud and happy to hear of your success and to know that you are carrying with you into your part of the world something of the Bridgewater spirit. How can I ever last through initiation? All these are ever present questions in the minds of freshmen. Most of our worries are unfounded, especially initiation which seems a horror in the process, but a pleasure in memory. In the freshman year, one of the president ' s major jobs is to start the treasury on its way. A Freshman Weekend is aways a good idea, but the class must also think of original ways to earn money. The President and the secretary attended the U.S.N.S.A. Congress at the University of Minnesota as an added effort to serve the college. This experience enabled S.C.A. to learn about issues on other campuses and to broaden the outlook of the Bridgewater campus. A governing council with elected student representatives from all classes attempts to solve common student prob- lems, co-ordinate college activities and stimulate increased responsibility by the students in executing the power of unified government.
