V ■4 is E3 n F ■ kill T ill )■■■! ! ' 3i®W S5 s dedication The reasons are legion that have compelled the members of the Class of ' 60 to dedicate their Alpha to no one other than you, Mr. Balfour S. Tyndall. This year has marked your twenty-fifth at Bridgewater. Through these years you have endeared your- self to Bridgewater ' s sons and daughters because of your marked scholarship, your sterling character, your master teaching, and your subtle good humor. You have enriched your students and, by so doing, have enriched your profession. By your kindly example, you have inspired and helped others to discover those secret glories of the profession that you so obviously have known. With consummate gratitude and sincerity, we dedicate this I960 Alpha to you; however, this nor any other written or spoken word that we may write or utter shall be your reward. ROBERT GARDULA Treasurer SHIRLEY BUMP Art and Layout Editor JANICE FOURNIER Secretary staff and foreword Not to he ministered unto, hut to minister Contrary to the odious admonition over that portal of Dante ' s crea- tion to Abandon hope, we have cause to embrace hope all who enter out of these doors — a sincere and prayerful hope that we will be equal to the obligation that Bridgewater ' s name makes ours, con- sistent in the wisdom of her preparation, loyal to the profession for which she has prepared us, and ever mindful of the message of her motto. May the following pages of the I960 Alpha provide many pleasur- able and reminiscent hours that will rekindle the glow of Bridgewater ' s vital spirit. The purpose of the M.A.A. is to carry out the men ' s athletic program throughout the year. This program includes both intramural and varsity sports. Each year the male students of the college elect a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and M.A.A. board to function on behalf of the needs and desires of the men of the college. This year the students of Bridgewater through their Student Council have enlarged the athletic program by adopting football as a varsity sport. It is hoped that this move will add widely to the prestige of the college and to the spirit of both undergraduates and alumni. 116 FIRST ROW: J. Argir, M. Walsh, W. Bartlett, C. Bas- sett, J. This organization is nearly as old as the College whose first meeting was in 1842. It is as young, forward- looking, and vigorous as you, its nearest members. To you, as students, the Association has given many things which you have taken for granted: in the Horace Mann Auditorium the murals with their inspira- tion and beauty, and the organ with its glorious tones, the carillonic chimes that sent you speeding to or from classes; the battered furniture (once store-bright) in the lounges; the garden and the greenhouse, many library books, even the existence of the college. To ybu as members of the teaching profession and citizens of the co mmunity, will come contacts with hundreds of Bridgewater graduates who are to be found in many varied lines of work in every state and several foreign countries. These graduates will extend the right hand of fellowship to you. To them you may look for help and counsel whenever you need inspiration or guidance. Membership in the Alumni Association implies a responsibility on your part, a debt of honor to the college, which is best and easiest discharged through regular contributions to the annual Alumni Fund. As you well know, there are countless areas in the college which function on a marginal existence for lack of adequate support. In these areas the Alumni Association can help if it has your financial assistance. However, more than your monetary donations are needed. There is a tremendous need for intelligent, well-informed citizens to speak up for the cause of the state colleges, to explain to the public why teacher-training institutions must have increased facilities and larger budgets. The Association looks to you to join your new voices to its older ones and to release again that vigor which will wheel the spheres. Membership in the Alumni Association also involves the responsibility of keep- ing the Alumni Office informed of current addresses. This is extremely important, if the Office is to function in the way it should. May all the joy of a successful teaching career be yours ! 165 YEARBOOKS TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY The World ' s Best Yearbooks Are Taylor-made • i n ,, . - . - ! a , - —:__ « ■ ■■i : $ m%m mm i 00m ' ■■ ' . - ■ -•- —
