DEDICATION With great admiration and pride the Class of 1959 dedicates the Alpha to you, Ralphs. Bates, Ph.D. In your quiet and unobtrusive manner you have shown us the way to explore the endless frontier of knowledge. You have instructed us to take advantage of the opportunities at hand— the jet age, the International Geophysical Year, and the atomic submarine. By your scholarly example you have inspired us to accept the challenges of the world and to attempt to solve these most perplexing human problems. In your everyday role of gentleman, scholar, and teacher, Dr. Bates, you have acquired the respect and sincere admiration of each member of the Class of 1959.

MARY LOU CANNIFF Editor-in-Chief if STAFF AND FOREWORD . . . to Know Ourselves Notwithstanding the rapid growth of Bridgewater during our four years here and the many changes which we have experienced, we of the Alpha staff are aware of the ideals, values, and traditions of Bridgewater which make us proud to acknowledge this school as our Alma Mater. We know that these enduring values have had a great influence on us while at Bridgewater and will continue to influence our lives after we have graduated. In the pages of this yearbook, we have tried to present the Bridgewater which we know and love and which, through its devoted faculty, has helped us to know ourselves.
