STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE Bridgewater, Massachusetts 359 DEDICATION With great admiration and pride the Class of 1959 dedicates the Alpha to you, Ralphs. Bates, Ph.D. In your quiet and unobtrusive manner you have shown us the way to explore the endless frontier of knowledge. You have instructed us to take advantage of the opportunities at hand— the jet age, the International Geophysical Year, and the atomic submarine. By your scholarly example you have inspired us to accept the challenges of the world and to attempt to solve these most perplexing human problems. In your everyday role of gentleman, scholar, and teacher, Dr. Bates, you have acquired the respect and sincere admiration of each member of the Class of 1959. MARY LOU CANNIFF Editor-in-Chief if STAFF AND FOREWORD . . . to Know Ourselves Notwithstanding the rapid growth of Bridgewater during our four years here and the many changes which we have experienced, we of the Alpha staff are aware of the ideals, values, and traditions of Bridgewater which make us proud to acknowledge this school as our Alma Mater. We know that these enduring values have had a great influence on us while at Bridgewater and will continue to influence our lives after we have graduated. In the pages of this yearbook, we have tried to present the Bridgewater which we know and love and which, through its devoted faculty, has helped us to know ourselves. We now present to you, in the 1959 Alpha, ourselves and our school as we know them. Maxwell, President The phrase Class of 1959 has been seen and heard by all of us many times during our four years at Bridgewater; but this phrase is no longer an abstraction, it has become a realization. Such a realization does not just occur, but must gradually be developed. At times, the road leading to the much desired end, graduation, has been long, dark, and uncertain. At these times the administration and faculty of our school have given us the inspiration to continue so that in June 1959 graduation has become a realization. We, the Class of 1959, are aware of the fact that the results of our days at Bridgewater will be reflected daily throughout our lives. It is for this reason that we wish to thank you, President Maxwell, and the members of your faculty for holding a philosophy of teaching which we all hope to retain— one of teaching people rather than books. It is because of this philosophy, combined with your understand- ing and patience, that our four years here have not only increased our general knowledge b ut have taught us also to know ourselves, so that we might better understand ourselves.
