STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE AT BRtDGEWATER July l, 1955 ytj dear Seniors of the Class of 1956: I am most grateful for the opportunity given me by the editor of your yearbook to say a word of farewell to you as you depart to take up the work for which you have been preparing yourselves during these past four years. What I have to say has probably been said frequently to you in the classroom and phrased far better than I may express it, but with my thoughts go a sincerity and an understanding of your problems and your opportunities which may compensate in part for these oft repeated ideas and ideals of mine. Your chosen vocation requires an understanding deep and wide, a sympathy large enough to encompass the world, and a desire to help that will not be fettered by the chains of race or color. Hard work, unpleasant duty, personal inconvenience, these are the test tubes in which you will be tried. The way you face your daily obligations will certainly decide whether you are to be run-of-the-mill teachers or teachers with a mission. There will be times when this mission will seem impossible of realization, when the troubles of the day and the watches of the night will induce discouragement and apathy. At such times, the very well springs of your enthusiasm may seem to run dry. Then your inner self, your convictions, your capacity for prayer, your sense of dedication will prove themselves your firm- est allies. The good teacher has the faculty of putting first things first. He knows the value of records and research, but he doesn ' t allow himself to become enmeshed in the plotting of graphs and the making of charts. Don ' t permit your ministrations to become depersonalized, for thus you may become full-time bookkeepers and part-time teachers. The teacher may be lost in the statistician. Your life ' s work at any given moment is the education of the child and his prepa- ration for life. Your dedication, then, is not to statistics, but to man. The life you have chosen is not suited for the dilettante. You will soon know how much courage, fortitude, and determination are necessary to keep you in the groove, to steady you when you falter, to help you combat the blandishments of easy work and lazy leisure. There must be literally hundreds of boys and girls in our Commonwealth well equipped by God and nature for the hardy, satisfying task of teaching. Let your light so shine, your joy in your work so persuade that others feeling the glow of your happiness may be inspired to follow in your foot- steps, to walk the path you are treading, to do the good you may be doing for the minds and spirits of students. Casual criticism of the difficulties of your profession taken out of context may repel those whom, otherwise, you might encourage to follow the gleam. Here as in most other matters, it is better to light a little candle than to complain of the darkness. I wish each of you Godspeed and happiness in your work; may good fortune attend you and smile on you during every moment of your professional careers. Cordially, Ij yu uJC L President
