We of the Alpha staff are no exceptions. Through our yearbook we have tried to present the Bridgewater we have known and loved in a way that would be a little unique, but, above all, in a way that would be most meaningful to the whole college and, in particular, to our class. Bridgewater in its ideals and values is essentially unchanging, yet growing and encompassing the very best of the new and the modern. We have tried to portray it in that way through the medium of these pages. We present to you the 1956 Alpha. ■.• •  — Albert Gardner Boyden Gymnasium Training School Woodward Hall Tillinghast Hall dedication With great admiration and respect for all those fine qualities which ennoble and enrich the teaching pro- fession, we, the Class of 1956, dedicate the memoirs of our Bridgewater years to you, Miss S. Elizabeth Pope. It has been through your untiring guidance as our dean of women, instructor, advisor, and friend that you have made the word — teacher — into a way of life. What I have to say has probably been said frequently to you in the classroom and phrased far better than I may express it, but with my thoughts go a sincerity and an understanding of your problems and your opportunities which may compensate in part for these oft repeated ideas and ideals of mine. Your chosen vocation requires an understanding deep and wide, a sympathy large enough to encompass the world, and a desire to help that will not be fettered by the chains of race or color. Hard work, unpleasant duty, personal inconvenience, these are the test tubes in which you will be tried. The way you face your daily obligations will certainly decide whether you are to be run-of-the-mill teachers or teachers with a mission. There will be times when this mission will seem impossible of realization, when the troubles of the day and the watches of the night will induce discouragement and apathy. At such times, the very well springs of your enthusiasm may seem to run dry. Then your inner self, your convictions, your capacity for prayer, your sense of dedication will prove themselves your firm- est allies. The good teacher has the faculty of putting first things first. He knows the value of records and research, but he doesn ' t allow himself to become enmeshed in the plotting of graphs and the making of charts. Don ' t permit your ministrations to become depersonalized, for thus you may become full-time bookkeepers and part-time teachers. The teacher may be lost in the statistician. Your life ' s work at any given moment is the education of the child and his prepa- ration for life. Your dedication, then, is not to statistics, but to man. The life you have chosen is not suited for the dilettante. You will soon know how much courage, fortitude, and determination are necessary to keep you in the groove, to steady you when you falter, to help you combat the blandishments of easy work and lazy leisure. There must be literally hundreds of boys and girls in our Commonwealth well equipped by God and nature for the hardy, satisfying task of teaching. Let your light so shine, your joy in your work so persuade that others feeling the glow of your happiness may be inspired to follow in your foot- steps, to walk the path you are treading, to do the good you may be doing for the minds and spirits of students. Casual criticism of the difficulties of your profession taken out of context may repel those whom, otherwise, you might encourage to follow the gleam. Here as in most other matters, it is better to light a little candle than to complain of the darkness. I wish each of you Godspeed and happiness in your work; may good fortune attend you and smile on you during every moment of your professional careers. SOCCER The 1955 soccer team may be credited with compiling the finest record in the history of the school. Led by Captain Doc Blanchon, the team amassed an impressive 12-1 record, and captured both the New England Teachers Colleges ' Conference and the Southern New England Coastal Conference championships. In the course of the season two records of note were set. The old team record of twenty-seven goals was supplanted by thirty-four, and Bob May registered a new individual scoring mark by scoring fourteen goals in thirteen games. With the final game five seniors made their exit from the soccer spotlight: Captain Blanchon, Bob May, Andy Miller, Eric Benson, and Jerry McVey. The plot thickens as sweet and shy Cindy Lu arrives at the school, brought there by her hi. billy, mountain dew-brewing family. The title song, Campus Moon, is sung by Ronnie and his new sweetheart, Cindy Lu, with a chorus of Observation Hill lovers. Campus Moon :::•::: Looking for the hillbillies that watered down the hooch, the bootleggers trace Pappy to the college. Time off from studies on this carefree campus as the chorus does the Yahoo Drag. Pamela tells Imogene about her plan to get Ronnie back from Cindy Lu. Ronnie goes in to win the game after being dejected and disin- terested. The boys celebrate by serenading their flapper sou- veneers. All ends well with Yahoo win- ning the first game in sixteen years because of Ronnie ' s efforts, and the Campus Moon shines again. a : •••.•. ' ; Dance Kids ' n Kanes 1 wML l ,_  4 .- % ' J.l . x.
