Dedication Admired for your devotion to the teaching profession, your forthrightness, and your in- vincible wit, you are to us an example of a man possessed of the gifts for both understand- ing and being able to satisfy the needs of your students. It is with great respect and admiration that we, the Class of 1954, fondly dedicate our yearbook to you . . . MR. JOHN L. DAVOREN. STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE AT BRIDGEWATER January 6, l°51i Dear Seniors: Though William Wordsworth probably never heard of college year books as we know them today, I think he was stating his sense of loss of the happy hours and delight-filled days that are so much a part of youth and yet so impossible of reliving or recapture, when he wrote: There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream, The earth, and every common sight To me did seem Apparelled in celestial light, The glory and the freshness of a dream. For you and your undergraduate colleagues, Alpha accomplishes what in Wordsworth ' s day only a poet ' s inspired imagination could do. It is a nice amalgam of sensitive pictures: plans and their outcomes, athletic activities and the highlights, social activities and their magic memories, pictures which, however dimmed, can be lightened up again, re-etched sharply by a hurried glance at your year book. Unfortunately for all of us, only time and retrospect can create the perspective necessary to see our college years in all their simple splendor: Yesteryear ' s good round of pleasure Every hour ' s gay crown of fun. We admire with a deeper, a more lasting affection the good friends of our undergraduate days, the happy experiences which rise out of wholesome friendships, the men and women who, in class and out, tried so diligently to interest us in the good life, and, finally, Alma Mater, whose kindly motherliness has placed these geramy gifts at our disposal. May God speed all of you 1 You have Bridgewater ' s philosophy as your guide! God ' s providence as your strength. Teach effectively and fearlessly. With St. Paul Fight the good fight keep the course. Alma Mater asks no more; no loyal child of Bridgewater should offer less. Under the coaching of Coach Swenson and the fighting leadership of Joe Pauley the Teacher ' s fought to one of the. best seasons in the history of Bridgewater. The Pedagogues, in a ten game season, won seven, tied one, and lost two ... a banner season in any league. With sometimes as many as three men competing for any given position Coach Swenson was able to follow a policy of liberal substitution which en- abled BTC to have at all times, a fresh team on the field. This season was the swan song for seven senior lettermen; Captain Joe Pauley, Manager Don Wormwood, Wally Malone, Ed Keller, Chris Koumantzellis, Charlie Christie, and Bill Hughes. THE RECORD BTC. Lane. The baseball team of 1953 can take pride in the 7 and 1 record which they collected for the season. Coached by Mr. Swenson and piloted by Captain Reese LeVasseur, this team had the fight and the spirit to win — the type of which Bridgewater should be justly proud. Coach Ed Swenson had a strong, reliable, right arm in Don Morey who won six games in as many starts. Relief hurlers Meserve and Pauley combined for the other tally which was won by Joe Pauley in the later innings of the game. Sharing the hon- or of guarding the initial sack, were Doc Blanch- on and Scoop Green. Ed Texiera and Paul Hickey filled in the right gap of the diamond by covering second base. Mr. Shortstop himself, Reese LeVasseur, turned in the same brillant performance in 1953 as for three years previous. At the hot corner for his second year, Joe Bruno was always alert for a bunt from opposing players. Switching to the outfield, we find Paul Sprague in left, Andy Miller in center, and Eric Benson in right. These three accounted for most of the power at the plate with Paul Sprague trying for that long ball and Miller and Benson poking those bingles to the opposite field. Bridgewater came up with a game-winning back- stop in spirited Joe Fratianni with Pete Lane also a strong contender for the receiving position. Credit is due assistant manager, Jack Hackett, and man- ager, Murray Karlsberg, for their help in supplying the needs of the team. On courts all new and smooth as glass We really played with lots of class Tournaments and playdays had us on the run, Callused hands, horrible scores, all in fun. BASKETBALL Thursday afternoons, how the whistle did blow! Pushing, charging, traveling — always on the go. We won a few, lost a lot, But best of all were the laughs we got! SOCIAL DANCE Wednesday nights really had us in a spin, One, two three — get the beat and you ' re in! Rumba, waltz, girls grab the men! Remember! the ratio ' s one to ten! SOFTBALL Memories of many a softball bout Yells of safe or strike three you ' re out! Losing or winning a rousing game Then back to the Dorm — friends just the same! Richness of life is largely a matter of friendships. I don ' t know who said this or why, but if it is analyzed could anything be more accurate? Four years at Bridgewater have been far from the Country Club life, both from the social as well as the financial viewpoints. Our swimming pools have been very dry, our golf courses too rough, and our cars too few. The friends we have made are the gold and silver of Bridgewater. We feel that a large amount of this gold and silver has been given to us through the objectives and activities of the Womens Recreation Association. The first rule of freshman initiation — everyone speaks to everyone else on campus — plus the first activities of W.R.A. bring everyone together from the freshmen to the seniors. The fall activities are always greeted with an almost overpowering enthusiasm. Bruised shins, tennis sets, flying birdies, and arrows, along with that delicious feeling of physical exhaustion seem to be the perfect culture in which brief acquaintanceships rapidly develop into lasting friendships. The perfect test of this is the question so often asked the senior who is happily out training, How do you like training? — the answer — I love it, but how I miss my kids! We will not be conceited enough to credit all these loyal bonds of friendship to W. R. A., but shall throw a rose to the college in general. The atmosphere that prevails everywhere on campus — the tennis courts, Tilly, Wood, the commuters ' rooms — is that of friendship and comradeship. In closing, we will never forget the happy times at Bridgewater or the friends four years have given us. Words don ' t say too much in themselves but these are only too fitting: As one grows older, one ceases to look for new friends, but all the dearer become the old and trusted ones .
