ALPHA 1952 State Teachers College qt Bridgewater, Massachusetts h m n - R ! t f § | DR. JOHN JOSEPH KELLY f § President of Bridgewater State Teachers College § | 1937-1951 | § § § LAST MESSAGE § | § § The world of education has always needed a devoted, intelligent guidance; § y today it is desperate for a leadership based on a true sense of values — values S 1 y of time and of eternity. § y The real problem of education, the responsibility of the teacher, is to § y show the child his wonderful possibilities, point a way to arouse his latent y y energies, and stimulate through the inspiration of precept and example his § y physical, mental and spiritual growth. y y No one, pupil or teacher, can make the most of himself until he looks y y upon his life as a magnificent promise, a possibility susceptible of realization. y y The promise, in our profession, lies in loyalty to our responsibility, our enthus- y y iasm for the sometimes arduous means as well as for the always glorious end. y y Our world needs good men and good women. Certainly it is part of our y y task to play a substantial part in the training that makes for the full life in y y today ' s pupils — tomorrow ' s destiny. It is platitudinous to say there is more y j to life than making a living, yet we do not need to be reminded in this day of y y multiple distraction that this is a mere incident in God ' s plan. We must not y j only believe this; we must feel it; it must become part of the very core of | j our beings. Then we shall, in a very special way, live the life triumphant, the y y life surrounded by the fruition of its sincere efforts. Life is God ' s great school y y for mankind; how blest we are to be part of His plan. y | May the measure of your good will and honest purpose in the adventure | y of teaching be the measure of your happiness and success. y I § t ! § § § t Administrator, teacher, gentleman and friend, Dr. John Joseph Kelly has become the quintessence of Bridgewater ' s ideals. Always ready to act as guide and counsellor, his every action was a mani- festation of the sincerity, understanding and unselfishness which so character- ized him. During his fourteen years of presidency, Bridgewater became the scene of many important advances: The college became an accredited member of the American Association for Teacher Education, University Extension courses were instituted and a summer session of the college initiated. Closely related with his interest in the problems of youth was Dr. Kelly ' s work in establishing the annual convention of Girls State, which is held each June at the college. Civic affairs concerned him deeply and in them Dr. Kelly exemplified a spirit of public-mindedness and service. An active member of many organi- zations, he was largely responsible for a municipal field being established in Bridgewater and provided opportunities for town children to participate in sports activities. In his messages and talks to the stude nt body, Dr. Kelly stressed open- mindedness, sincerity and service as inalienable parts of a true teacher. He was concerned, too, with the spiritual and moral aspects. To be a teacher is to have a great mission in life, he wrote, and then, on another occasion, May success in your chosen profession be measured by your contribution of service to those you instruct and to your fellow men in their quest for spiritual security. These were words in which he believed and words which he himself exemplified. To those of us who have had the privilege of being associated with him, Dr. Kelly ' s idealism will long be felt. Our hearts and our minds will retain his teachings — a benevolent influence, omnipotent and real, that shall guide us toward the richest fulfillment of our profession. And In His Spirit . . . And so the clouds hovering above the spire form, merge and pass on, one more beautiful than another, in the endless, timeless pattern of immortality. And so you: loose your thoughts like a thousand arrows from the bow of an open and agile mind, strung with the strings of truth, that they, too, may soar to lofty heights and join the clouds in that immortal procession. Again the S ox lost to the Yankees. Two of baseball ' s present day immortals retired: Bobby Doerr and Joe DiMaggio. The defeat of Joe Louis ended another shining era in boxing. But one bright spot was this year ' s edition of Bridgewater ' s Soccer team. Captained by a fighter, Tom Brunell, B.T.C. racked up its finest season in many years. The Red and White scored upsets over New Bedford Textile 5-3 for the first time in four- teen years and a stunning 4-3 win over arch rival, Fitchburg. Durfee fell to the Teachers 3-2 and later in the season Suffolk did, too. However, Durfee and New Bedford evened up the score by downing Bridgewater in later games and a heartbreaking loss was suffered at the hands of New England College at Keene, New Hampshire. Beside Tom Brunell, John Zoino, Fran Curran, Don Currier, Charlie Christie and Ernie Remondini were tremendous on offense. Frank Souza, Al Saulino, Len O ' Brien and Art Chase were pillars of defense. With only two seniors graduating Coach Swenson should have an even more successful season next year. After several weeks of practice, B.T.C. opened the 1951-1952 basketball season and at this writing, it doesn ' t look as though the team will exactly set the world on fire. However the season has already proven to be more successful than last year ' s. Individually, the team looks very good. Captain Dick Stokinger does a terrific job on the offensive backboard. Red Nolan and Don Morey are sharp-shooting forwards and John Zoino and Jack Murphy are dependable guards. We have plenty of good subs in Bob Ryan, Charlie Christie, Bob Ippolito, Armand Boissell, but it is impossible to get the breaks that go to win games. Never is the team outplayed or outfought; just constantly outlucked and outscored. Optimism is the keynote of the future; let ' s hope that 1952 brings to Bridgewater, its well-deserved success. The crack of ash on horsehide is sweet music to every lover of our national pastime, baseball. It means pop flies, sizzling grounders, and low drives, mingled with sensa- tional catches, nice tries and beautiful errors. Yes, here ' s a game of thrills combining skill, coordination, and teamwork. Hoping to get a break from Mother Nature, Coach Ed Swenson will call out the team early in April to do a rebuilding job after the loss of several good players. At any rate, the rebuilding job shouldn ' t be too hard. From last year ' s squad, Coach Swenson has some good dependable hitters in George Red Nolan and Don Morey; good fielders in Reese LeVasseur, Charlie Christie, Fran Curran and Ed Bielski and, of course, plenty of good B.T.C. spirit. Good pitching is expected from Carl McCauley and so in 1952 we look forward to a very satisfactory season in games with Stonehill, Curry, Durfee Tech and New Bedford. FOOTBALL The last sentence in last year ' s Alpha on Intra- murals was Who will beat the Class of ' 52 touch football team? Well, the answer is, NO ONE! Despite the fact that the Seniors suffered two ties, the Class of ' 52 went undefeated for the fourth year in a row. Members of the champs were Morin, Bar- rows, Nevirauskas, Cooper, Gomez and Whalon. INTRAMURALS BASKETBALL Intramural basketball also enjoyed another fine season with Guido Risi at the helm. Six well matched teams are competing for the championship and it looks as if there will be a lot of excitement from beginning to end. SOFTBALL In Softball, the classes of ' 51 and ' 52 ended in a tie, but Fran Bennett ' s superior pitching sparked the underclassmen to a championship. On Father and Son Day, the varsity team played the Softball All Stars with the latter winning, 12-9. Losing 9-4 going into the top of the ninth, the All Stars pulled the game out of the fire by scoring eight runs in the ninth inning. Again, in 1952, we expect to have another thrill- ing intramural Softball season. Another year, another fall . . . autumn leaves and colors bursting forth as the Women ' s Athletic Association begins a successful sports program once more.
