DEDICATION The Alpha Yearbook of 1951 is hereby dedicated to George H. Durgin, a veteran of twenty-five years teaching experience at Bridgewater State Teachers College. A graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, class of 1911, Mr. Durgin furthered his studies at Harvard University, receiving the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education. During World War I he served as watch officer on a, gunboat in the Medi- terranean and as an executive officer of a Navy transport between British and French ports. In 1926, after five years of teaching in ' local high schools, a new day dawned for Mr. Durgin: he became a mathematics instructor at Bridgewater State Teachers College. The years sped by and once again the war clouds burst in Europe. The cry of battle sounded forth and Mr. Durgin answered to its call. As Com- mander Durgin writes: I served four years in World War II at various naval stations fom Boston to Okinawa. I also served one year with Women Appointed for Voluntary Emergency Service — as one of the original men behind the women behind the guns. After a quarter century of teaching expe- rience at Bridgewater, Mr. Durgin notes that the distinctive feature of this college is the friendliness of the students and the faculty. He has also watched, with keen interest, the growing up of his students into parents and grandparents. We salute you, George H. Durgin, mathematician, philosopher, humorist and friend.
