X_Jo M c-no y- PVC Uw % ryrue n s ) State Teachers College At Bridgewater, Massachusetts ' o PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE The spiritual vacuum in America today is the fruit of an educational policy which for all too long has ignored God. Over three hundred years ago the great poet John Milton wrote, The end of learning is to know God aright, and out of that knowledge to love Him, to imitate Him, to be like Him, as we may the nearest by possessing our souls of true virtue, which being united to the heavenly grace of faith makes up the highest perfection. Man ' s ascent through the a ges has been long and hard, and at each step he has accumulated new knowl- edge about things, about people, about the relationship of men, one to the other, in accordance with the Divine Plan. It is important that those who guide the thinking of the student of today and make of him the responsible citizen of tomorrow should be men and women of sound ideas. We must never forget that what is in the teacher ' s head and heart passes into the minds of the young. As teachers, we must bring back into the classrooms these and other Christian truths which form the basis of our existence and the existence of our United States of America. Education must train the human will along with the intellect. It must produce a free man. This is the basic education which our Founding Fathers urged as needed for the perpetuation of the Republic. To be a teacher is to have a great mission in life. The teacher is one of the great channels whereby the heritage and traditions of civilization are transmitted to the young whose habits, ideas, and ways of life will determine the course of our national and world future. There can be no greater work. May you be recognized and respected by those who have a true philosophy for right living, as A TEACHER. JOHN J. KELLY President DEDICATION The Alpha Yearbook of 1951 is hereby dedicated to George H. Durgin, a veteran of twenty-five years teaching experience at Bridgewater State Teachers College. A graduate of Phillips Exeter Academy, class of 1911, Mr. Durgin furthered his studies at Harvard University, receiving the degrees of Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education. During World War I he served as watch officer on a, gunboat in the Medi- terranean and as an executive officer of a Navy transport between British and French ports. In 1926, after five years of teaching in ' local high schools, a new day dawned for Mr. Durgin: he became a mathematics instructor at Bridgewater State Teachers College. The years sped by and once again the war clouds burst in Europe. The cry of battle sounded forth and Mr. Durgin answered to its call. As Com- mander Durgin writes: I served four years in World War II at various naval stations fom Boston to Okinawa. I also served one year with Women Appointed for Voluntary Emergency Service — as one of the original men behind the women behind the guns. After a quarter century of teaching expe- rience at Bridgewater, Mr. Durgin notes that the distinctive feature of this college is the friendliness of the students and the faculty. He has also watched, with keen interest, the growing up of his students into parents and grandparents. We salute you, George H. Durgin, mathematician, philosopher, humorist and friend. Low, Assistant Professor of English and Speech at Bridgewater State Teachers College. Not to be ministered unto, but to minister ALMA MATER Within thy life we grew; The task you set we knew; To burn thy beacon bright Where fall the rays of light. Chorus O Alma Mater, thy children strive To keep thy faith alive; O Alma Mater, we sing for thee This song of loyalty. O Alma Mater, thy voice alone Will guide in paths unknown. Within thy life we sang Of love and peace that rang Throughout thy sounding halls, Now memories in thy walls. Beyond thy life we raise Thy worthy name in praise; Where e ' er we chance to be; We honor B. T. C. Let ' s face it. ] l ? SENIOR SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Rose Marie Welch Secretary Thomas J. SPORTS SOCCER 1950 With the return of several varsity players and new frosh material, the B. T. C. soccer team, under the captainship of Chet Smoleski, looked forward to a great season. However, after a slow start with defeats suffered at the hands of New Bedford Textile twice (3-0 2-1) and Fitchburg Teachers (4-1), the team began to click and score. Bridgewater then tied Durfee Tech ( 2-2 ) and New England College ( 3-3 ) while at the same time strengthening its defense. Goalie Dan Cagnina, improving with each game, began to see less of opposing forwards. Victory smiled on the B. T. C. squad as they cavorted to wins over Suffolk U. (5-0), R. I. C. E. (5-1) and Durfee Tech (2-0) with the scoring line of Zoino, O ' Brien, Chase, Christie and Fletcher adding the necessary points. In the Suffolk U. game Johnny Zoino booted in all five goals. The final game of the season pitted Boston U. and the Teachers in what was supposed to be a romp for B. U. After holding their own in a fine defensive game, B. U. scored in the waning moments of play, a goal that was bitterly disputed, to eke out a 1 to victory. The final team record: 3 wins, 4 losses, 2 ties, and an even better season to look forward to. BASEBALL 1950 Coach Ed Swenson decided to hold this year ' s spring training in the south so all the erstwhile candidates carried their gloves and spikes southward — to Lower Campus. The team, with a few main- stays, brought out the talents of the many freshmen, and the varsity team featured many a new face. We opened the season at home, where we and Suffolk U. were both beaten by Jupiter Pluvius. After win- ning a close contest from Stonehill, B. T. C. defeated Curry (6-2), here at Legion Field. Recovering, but not completely, from a 10-run deficit, B. T. C. was just edged by Durfee Tech. (12-11). In the best played game of the year, B. T. C. edged out Durfee Tech. at Fall River, in extra innings. Red Nolan tripled Will Ford home and later scored himself. The play that saved the game for the teachers was a Hughes to Ford to Bielski double play which erased the winning run for Durfee. New Bedford continued to jinx our boys by edging them twice (2-0; 8-5). Good defensive play kept the games close, a Ford to LeVasseur to Morey double play and one by Douthart unassisted. It looks as if the boys are mov- ing up to the majors? lilFrp ' -•■ « BASKETBALL 1950 Bridgewater basketball players received new uni- forms this year and a new scoreboard in the gym. But, unfortunately, that was all they got. Marsh Douthart, captain of this year ' s team, Don Morey and Red Nolan were the only hold-overs from last year ' s varsity five. Johnny Zoino and Chris Christie were the other two starters on the floor at the tap- off. BTC started their season by beating one of the finest alumni teams to appear here. But then the deluge started. Inability to play fine, fast basketball during the late stages of the game, injuries, failure to capitalize on control of the backboards, and the fouling out of first-stringers proved to be the down- fall of the team. Leads that were built up the hard way during the first half disappeared and when the game ended Bridgewater would find itself on the short end of the score. There is no doubt that the caliber of the opponent ' s basketball game greatly improved, but BTC just couldn ' t keep up with the pace. Outstanding for the Teachers during the season were Douthart, Zoino, Morey, Nolan, Christie, O ' Brien and LeVasseur. Regardless of the record we have to say that win, lose or draw, Bridgewater al- ways fought to the last whistle. Wait till next year. INTRAMURAL SPORTS Softball The Seniors were no match for the rest of the loop as they ran away with the honors in the Softball league. With superb pitching, hitting, and all-around defensive play they proved their right to the crown. Next year four groups will scramble to occupy the vacated throne. Football For the second year in a row the Juniors, co- captained by Bill Whalon and Bob Cooper, swept to their second straight championship by taking five straight games. Each game had its thrill as Tiny Lemieux drew up five different combinations in an attempt to defeat the Junior set but to no avail. The Juniors will be out in an effort ot make it three con- secutive championship years next season. Who will stop them? Basketball Thirty-five rugged men of the college started the intramural basketball season. Under the competent direction of Dan Cagnina six teams were formed and a thrilling season loomed up. The first round ended with the Oilers capturing the honors without suffer- ing a defeat. Close behind were the Whalers. The other teams were, in the order of their finish: Bullets, Packers, Celtics and Stags. a M. A. A. FATHER AND SON BANQUET Men ' s Athletic Association, in conjunction with all the varsity sports, gave their annual Father and Son banquet at Tillinghast Dining Hall. The banquet was not the only highlight of the day, for it was preceded by a baseball game in the morning. Bridgewater sent Stonehill down to defeat and started the festivities that were to last for the remainder of the day. After a satisfying meal, the speakers of the eve- ning were introduced by Coach Swenson. The first speaker, Denny Myers, then coach of the Boston Col- lege football team, spoke about the merits of sports in the college and the part that they play in building up the character of the individual. Gerry Nason, sports editor of the Boston Post, then delivered his address, which included many an amusing anecdote about famous sports figures of the past and present. Mr. Nason also stressed the fact that we, the students of Bridgewater, must be aware of our responsibilities in the field of teaching. At the conclusion of the banquet Coach Edward Swenson awarded the members of the varsity squads with certificates and charms to attest to their athletic prowess. I am sure, said Coach Swen- son, that these men of Bridgewater will make a noble showing whatever be their field of combat. F V Xi. C S fa ib e v y  « e° if S UN r«e io l l t J« 1 0 6 Dec  nbvi lo . The themes Of Greece have long since vanished in the night For you are from an age that is no more. Wm. K. Sprague, Jr. To Phaeton ' s Sisters In Lombardy the long-leaved poplars weep Although he died a thousand years ago. They weep for Phaeton though he lies in sleep — Hurled from the heavens to the world below. They sadly whisper his beloved name, But no more does he answer to their cry. I Along the blue Italian Po the flame Of hope burns low; its smouldering embers lie In scattered heaps across the void of time, Despoiled with fire by the hand of Jove. And yet the sisters sigh and act the mime Of grief. O sweetness of a sister ' s love, How long we search and we may find you not, But though unseen thy love is not unsought. Wm. K. Sprague, Jr. Age Age is to some an awful thing, Although it cannot be controlled You dread the day the feeling comes That you are growing old. When you begin to doubt and fear, And dread those darkened things untold, When you cannot laugh at yourself, Then you are growing old. When you lose hope and you lose faith, And then become bitter and cold, When you have left your dreams behind, Then you are growing old. But age is always in your mind If life ' s gifts and love you ca n hold, No matter how the years fly by, You never will grow old. Marie Corcoran To Keats, 129 Years After His Death A moment more of life and Adonais Might have reached the stars. But one brief moment From eternity and with the impetus Of years he would have sung with ravishment. Where wert thou might mother when he lay, When thy son lay pierced by the shaft which flies In darkness? But he had vanished far away. Now Shakespeare is secure upon his throne Though hundreds sing, for Adonais died Before his lyric song had fully grown. The earth wept, the murmured forest sighed Unwanted grief, though with his fragrant breath He oft had welcomed the approach of death. Wm. K. Sprague, Jr. (ail mm CLASS ODE 1. i Sing, chorus, sing; softly sing a sweet farewell And let thy music echo in our hearts. Oh glorious dawn Of youth. The world before us lies In shadows, but arise! Ascend upon The wings of morn and, soaring, touch the skies In which the long-winged swallow flies. The night Is near and far away the cannon roar; But they are fleeting shadows on the plain Of life. Awake! The light Of freedom lies beyond, though with the lore Of earth we live and love and for a moment reign. 3. Now we are gone; yet still the ivy twines. The autumn comes, the green of spring has turned To burnished gold and still the ivy twines. And now the flickering flame which once burned Fiercely in our souls flares forth, the thoughts Of youth emerge from out the endless throng Of years, as on the air a once familiar Melody is wrought.
