DAVIS Supervisor of Training PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE Though the whole world is staggered by a profound concern for the future of our civilization, there must be somewhere a center of calm and assurance. That center can be found only in the mind and in the heart. The fear of war must give place to a deepened confidence in the good that still exists in human nature and in the will of the great majority of human beings everywhere that there shall be peace on earth. The supreme requirement of the hour is a dynamic leadership of youth, clear of mind and clean of heart, dedicated to the cause of peace through the education of all of the children of all of the people in freedom, and in the fellowship of God and of all men. The fate of civilization rests in the hands of those who teach. At no time in our history has the responsibility of the teacher been greater for the preservation of these ideals of civilization which we cherish. May your leadership contribute to the perpetuation of these ideals! May you know and experience the joys and blessings of success in the years to come! DEDICATION A dedication is a serious undertaking; and we, the Class of 1950, wish to be sincere when we make our dedication to world freedom. Freedom from oppression seems to have no meaning in the world of today. It is a term we read about, only a hope in the hearts of men, a memory for none. In our four years at college we have studied the economic, geographic, scientific, and social aspects of the world. This has placed an enormous responsibility on our shoulders. We have been freed from the ignorance that blinds those who work know- ingly and unknowingly to destroy freedom. As teachers, as leaders, it is our solemn duty to lead our fellow men. Maybe we can start one infinitesimal fire of freedom somewhere— a fire that can be fanned to a blaze strong enough for the entire world to feel its heat! We realize that this will not be an easy task, but we accept it as a challenge. .E o G 1 0) c ! o -i 5 -; 111 = 3 « id £ c a -1 3 Q e ■5 i — i O Q_ O m V if) s x 5 5. . Bridgewater Baseball Team THE SPORTS PROGRAM The sports program at B.T.C. is maintained by the Men ' s Athletic Association and is supervised by Athletic Director Frederick Meier and Coach Edward Swenson. Var- sity squads in soccer, basketball and baseball engage in intercol- legiate competition; while class squads compete in touch-football, basketball and softball, as a part of the fiery intramural program. Starting from scratch, the post- war program of of the M.A.A. has reached a commendable peak due to the excellent spirit displayed both by the competing athletes and the entire student body. The success of the sports program is one of the most concrete mani- festations of the Bridgewater spirit. BASEBALL 1949 SPARKLES FROM THE DIAMOND 76 Last year ' s baseball squad showed the results of diligent practice, by placing on the ledger a record which was definitely a credit to Bridgewater. Sargent Smith, Warren Thuotte and Don Morey turned in fine performances on the rubber, while Captain Ricky Sargent teamed up with Will Ford, and Mai Dillon and Hap Mazukina produced at the plate. Marsh Douthart turned in the fielding gem of the year to sew up Sargent Smith ' s three hitter against Durfee and to sweep the series. Captain Sargent ' s big bat helped to subdue Durfee twice. Suffolk University was the only tough nut which the locals couldn ' t crack. Coach Edward Swenson found himself with a strong nucleus about which to build this year ' s squad for a successful season. It ' s, a strike! B. T. C. SOCCER TEAM SOCCER JOTTINGS FROM THE FIELD A determined, senior-studded soccer squad matched the pluck of its co-captains, Paul Salley and Walter Morrison, to turn in the most successful season recorded at B.T.C. since the war. Coach Edward Swenson provided the strategy but found it unnecessary to inspire this outstanding eleven. Opposition was provided by Durfee Technical, New Bedford Textile, Boston University, Suffolk Uni- versity, and Fitchburg Teachers College. The out- standing victory of the year found the Bridgewater lads displaying a well-oiled offense backed by a solid defense to upset a highly-touted Boston Uni- versity combine. A penalty shot by George Pappas matched an early B.U. score, while a clever left- footed drive by Paul Salley provided the margin of victory. Co-captains Paul Salley and Walter Morrison were ably assisted by such versatile performers as Hap Mazukina, Gene Margozzi, George Pappas, Warren Cooke and Burnham Miller. A bright future was promised by the work of returning under- classmen: Chester Smolski, Frank Souza, Dan Cag- nina and Fran Curran. INTRAMURALS A three-team touch-football league presented a fiery display of clean, hard competition during the brisk fall afternoons. A fighting Eagle team, cap- tained by Sam Gomez, showed its stamina by coming from behind in two successive games to capture hard-fought victories. Thirty students engaged in this program and the vigorous cheering of wildly partisan spectators indicated the interest which it aroused. The excellent response to the touch-football program has prompted Warren Thuotte, president of M.A.A., to lay plans for the organization of a greatly enlarged softball program. Get that ball! 77 Varsity Basketball Team PERSONALITIES Soccer co-captains, PAUL SAL- LEY and WALTER MORRISON, win our opening salute for their inspira- tional leadership. Basketball cap- tain JOE KUDERA shared honors with GEORGE Swish PAPPAS; while on the diamond, JOHN HUGHES, FRANK HENNESSY and WARREN THUOTTE were the stars. HAP MAZUKINA, MARSHALL LAFORET and DICK HOVEY proved to be all-round performers, while rugged IZZY GREENBERG distin- guished himself as the most depend- able. We salute a host of other fine athletes led by BOB LEMOS, GENE MARGOZZI, WARREN COOKE and BURNHAM MILLER. BASKETBALL THE BIG FIVE Coach Edward Swenson, Captain Joseph Kudera, and Manager Henry Hicks led a spirited but in- experienced Bridgewater array into the third year of competition in the Southern New England Coastal Basketball Conference. Eight league encounters were supplemented by eight independent set-to ' s to round out a rugged schedule. League opposition was provided by Stonehill College, Bryant College, New Bedford Textile and Bradford Durfee Technical. Independent competition found B.T.C. engaging Salem Teachers College, Suffolk University, Rhode Island College of Education, and Curry College. A pre-season encounter with the Alumni clearly showed that Bridgewater would sorely miss such veteran performers as Bob Teahan and Ricky Sargent, who graduated last year. However, the work of Captain Kudera, Marshall Douthart and Don Morey was outstanding; and the picture was considerably brightened by the display put on by newcomers Bailey, Zoino and Nolan. Fu ture Swimming Instructors INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL Directors Daniel Cagnina and Sam Gomez or- ganized a well-balanced league of class basketball teams, which swung into action early in November. As we went to press, the senior squad featuring Captain Paul Salley, Hap Mazukina, Marsh Laforet, Israel Greenberg, Bob Lemos, Gene Margozzi and Paul Dickie had established themselves as the lead- ing contenders for the mythical crown. Indications were that a dark horse freshman ' array led by Captain George Cahill would provide the most serious opposition to the seniors. Despite the out- come of the league, each of the sixty-odd competi- tors will have participated in some stimulating exer- cise. ATHLETES IN ACTION 1 Hf ■F I ' HhC The Coin Toss Soccer Seniors ATHLETIC AWARDS An impressive ceremony was held on Sports Night in May, when President John J. Kelly, assisted by Athletic Director Frederick Meier and Coach Edward Swenson, presented awards to senior athletes. Charms were awarded to those athletes who had accrued four varsity credits, and a certificate was issued for each credit earned. According to M.A.A. President Warren Thuotte, the following seniors had qualified, at press time, for the respective awards. CHARMS: John Hughes, Dick Hovey, Joseph Kudera, Marshall Laforet, Alfred Mazukina, Burnham Miller, Walter Morri- son, George Pappas, and Paul Salley. CERTIFICATES: Will Alden, Bob Driscoll, Warren Cooke, Israel Green- berg, Paul Dickie, Bob Firing, Bob Lemos, Frank Hennessy, Charles Mann, Gene Margozzi, Warren Thuotte, Malcolm Dillon, and Mike Sullivan. Intramural Touch-Football Intramural Softball 79 An Anxious Moment Officers and Board members of the Women ' s Athletic Association plan an active and varied pro- gram of sports. An active program? One glance at lower campus during the fall months revealed the field hockey program. The seniors captured top honors, an undefeated season. Again we sent a team to Wellesley, bringing back two wins and one defeat. While some were aiming at their opponent ' s goal, others were aiming at the target. Yes, Bridgewater has female Robin Hoods who develop the skill and steadiness of good archers. Along Graveyard Way, horseshoes were heaved by mighty members of the weaker sex, while tennis, oddly enough, was being played on the tennis courts. Hikers and bikers saw the landmarks men- tioned in CO. When the cold weather invaded, inhabitants of lower campus moved indoors to basketball, swim- ming, shuffleboard, social and square dancing. BOWLING It ' s difficult to tell whether the beautiful new alleys or the fact that bowling is now co-educational is responsible for the big turnout this year. Certainly, Bridgewater ' s Metro-Bowl is any bowler ' s Para- dise. And what Bridgewater gal will refuse an opportunity to compete against and bowl with the men of the college? WOMEN ' S TUMBLING Squash! To most students of B.T.C. this cry would bring visions of pie, a popular dessert in the dining hall; but, to members of W.A.A. ' s tumbling team this means fun, skill, precision, laughs and exercise. The tumblers build a pyramid by climbing on each other ' s back, and when the top member gives the signal, Squash, there is a squish accom- panied by gales of giggles. It ' s a stunt that might be compared to that of the unsuccessful magician who pulls the table cloth out from under the neatly stacked dishes only to see them tumble to the floor in a heap. MODERN DANCE The leotard-clad members of the W.A.A. may be distinguished from other sports enthusiasts, at first by their groans of aching bones, and when that stage is passed, by sudden glissades and leaps through the air. Ardent fans may follow their prepa- ration in the W.A.A. dance class as apprentices for the Modern Dance Club, an independent group. Springtime is the time to oil that glove, sharpen your batting eyes and report to the softball field. After the first workout, complete with aching mus- cles and sore fingers, you are ready for the play ball signal. Teams are organized and softball is under way with competition at its highest. Win or lose, the games are enjoyed by all. For those who fear freckles, there is volleyball and badminton in the gym where old Sol can only peer in through barred windows. Social affairs are as much a part of the pro- gram and include the Supper Hike, the Gym Jam, the Pern Dem and the Banquet. TABLE TENNIS Paddling ping-pong balls across the table in Wood ' s recreation room is popular, and credit may be earned at your convenience. Tournament members record their progress on a ladder, each rung matched with the one above. Champs in the ' 49- ' 50 tournament are: First, Margaret Jenkins, ' 50; Second, Marie Corcoran, ' 51; Third, Lois Melville, ' 52, and Jean Hassett, ' 53. SPORTS ' Phys. Ed.
