Zo the Class of ' 46 Alma Mater will observe this year the centenary of the first Normal School building in America erected at public expense. This is, in a most particu- lar w ay, our pride, for it was on Bridgewater ' s campus this edifice was built in the name of teacher education. As you go forth into the classrooms of the Commonwealth and beyond into a world still torn and confused by the selfish issues of the moment, the attitudes of those who would destroy man ' s dignity and rear in its stead cringing fear, blind obedience, and servility, may you find your strength and your solace in the principles and ideals inculcated by Bridgewater. Refresh your spirit at the front of Horace Mann ' s wisdom: Coiled up in this institution as in a spring is a power whose uncoiling may wheel the sphere. As graduates of this college you have demonstrated your power and desire to serve selflessly, to challenge and to accept challenge in the cause of wisdom and goodness. Keep your democratic faith firm, your courage high, and your principles uncompromised. Only so may you battle valiantly and effectively against those forces which would reduce man to the level of machinery. May your philosophy of education inspire you to seek always the end of all good education: a knowledge of God, the Creator; full intellectual, physical, moral development of man; a perfect sense of duty. Thus must we fight the good fight, run the good race, keep faith with our profession. May progress and success be yours.
