I ii 1 1 1 [■■■' ■■Mptfoagl an State Zeaekefs College ftridgewater, Massachusetts To FREDERICK L WOOD our kind friend and erstwhile professor. Despite his brief stay with us as a member of our faculty, the class of 1946 will long remember his genial personality . Because of Mr. Wood ' s genuine interest in the college, his outstanding capabilities, and his depth of knowledge, he was admired and respected by all students. To a fine instructor we wish every success in his future pursuits. A Zribute To VIVIAN J. LOVELL June IS, 1942— May 9, 1946 Remembered always by the many friends She left too soon. The first to graduate, To wear her cap and gown forever, now. . . . To Vivian, who worked with us until The eve of triumph, we, the members of Her class, do dedicate our book — and hers. B. M. ' 46 Dedication Gras JOHN J. KELLY President Zo the Class of ' 46 Alma Mater will observe this year the centenary of the first Normal School building in America erected at public expense. This is, in a most particu- lar w ay, our pride, for it was on Bridgewater ' s campus this edifice was built in the name of teacher education. As you go forth into the classrooms of the Commonwealth and beyond into a world still torn and confused by the selfish issues of the moment, the attitudes of those who would destroy man ' s dignity and rear in its stead cringing fear, blind obedience, and servility, may you find your strength and your solace in the principles and ideals inculcated by Bridgewater. Refresh your spirit at the front of Horace Mann ' s wisdom: Coiled up in this institution as in a spring is a power whose uncoiling may wheel the sphere. As graduates of this college you have demonstrated your power and desire to serve selflessly, to challenge and to accept challenge in the cause of wisdom and goodness. Keep your democratic faith firm, your courage high, and your principles uncompromised. Only so may you battle valiantly and effectively against those forces which would reduce man to the level of machinery. May your philosophy of education inspire you to seek always the end of all good education: a knowledge of God, the Creator; full intellectual, physical, moral development of man; a perfect sense of duty. Thus must we fight the good fight, run the good race, keep faith with our profession. May progress and success be yours. to u. C 0+ JOSEPH I. ARNOLD M. ISABEL CALDWELL ft. s. JULIA C. CARTER MARY M. In that group were the members of the Class of 1946. Ours was the first class to begin studies at B. T. C. as a war-time group, and the future looked none too bright. Neverthe- less, we were a determined, if somewhat grim body of freshmen, and this de- termination to succeed in any undertaking was to be valuable indeed in the years to come. Only the members of our class can appreciate what it meant to have been allowed to spend our last year at Bridgewater as students in a world at peace. Our introduction to life at Bridgewater came with the physical exams in the gym. Shall we ever forget the first time we saw those angel-robes? That experience was hardly behind us when we found ourselves the victims of a well-planned and well-executed initiation at the hands of a somewhat ruthless class of sophomores. Clothespin curlers, assorted shoes and stockings, book- bags made from the pillow-cases of our long-suffering mothers, and loud rendi- tions of our Alma Mater will always be vivid in our memories. From this point on, life became more bearable. The Big Sister- Little Sister party started us out on the social life of the college, followed closely by the Barn Dance. Classes and extra-curricular activities made our lives busy, and then came our first Mid-Year exams with their accompanying head- aches and worries. The few men we had in the college left for the various branches of service, and the months moved along smoothly. In March we saw our Service Flag dedicated, and then studies occupied our time until June, when we left college with the bright prospect of returning in the fall as sophomores. Our second year at B. T. C. found us engrossed in such things as geography and physical science, and war-work of one kind or another. There were War Bonds to be bought in the rotunda, scrap paper to be collected and baled, Red Cross blood donations, and the minstrel show which S. C. A. spon- sored in its spring bond drive. In spite of all of this serious work, we had our lighter moments. To begin with, we enjoyed the initiation sorrows of those poor kids who were following in our footsteps — the freshmen. They bore up well the Class under the strain, however, and we were soon to learn that they were great kids and real pals. Then came the Christmas Banquet, which was an eagerly awaited event. We executed our duties as waitresses to the best of our amateur ability and heard no complaints from our customers. The faculty entertainment was really something to see. Certainly none of us could ever consume cigarettes and cokes with the grace and dexterity of Miss Caldwell — and as for draping our- selves over a chair as she did — c ' est impossible! Spring of our sophomore year found us brimming with energy and bubbling over with good spirits. We really expressed ourselves and displayed our talents beautifully in what has now become a campus legend — our Sophomore Sophistries. Nothing quite like them had ever been seen on campus before, and no future production can ever equal them. (Everyone who saw them will re- member with a chuckle such performances as Rosella Mitchell ' s portrayal of Miss Graves, Jane Russell as Miss Pope, Barbara Kane as Mr. Tyndall, and several others.) May found us in a dancing mood, and we sponsored an informal dance for visiting servicemen. The dance was held in Tilly and the long hours of planning and striving, the numerous attempts to find available men were justi- fied. On this gay note we realized that another year had flown by. Of course, the matter of Final Exams was a mere trifle, to be dealt with in a manner known only to those who have ever spent a Memorial Day Week end with a note-book in one hand and a cup of black coffee in the other. September 1944. Two years had passed and we had arrived at the long-cherished position of upper classmen. We had several newcomers in our midst, for the suspension of classes at the State Teachers College in Hyannis sent the phys.-ed. majors to us, together with several other transfer students. The idea of having such rugged people with us was a worry — we might be expected to keep up with them. Our fears were groundless, however, and the Hyannis gals proved to be tops. We heard endless tales about their Camp Howes by the sea. In May we had a wonderful beach party there and learned that the tales were really true — there is no place like it. sm This third year of life at B. T. C. was really eventful. Feeling the need of financial aid for our treasury, we launched a sales campaign to provide fellow students with book-plates and name labels. After all, name labels did add that certain something to the letters going overseas, and the profit was good. The Day Student Party, Alumni Week end, canteen duty, and camp dances kept us happy, in spite of the old boogey that haunts every junior. Training School, however, proved to be eight weeks of fun or misery, according to the number of lesson plans one had to make. Grey blazers trimmed with maroon and adorned with the college seal were our next acquisitions. Things were really beginning to brighten up around the campus, and then came graduation. It was impossible to think that we were to bear the daisy chain in honor of the girls who had been our companions for so long. Even our pride in our own elevated rank couldn ' t subdue the lumps that so many of us felt in our throats as we watched the seniors receive their degrees and prepare to leave B. T. C. Somehow, in some strange way, we had now come to the final step, the last hurdle in our path. We were seniors and even the fact that we proudly wore our caps and gowns for a whole week couldn ' t make this seem real. Half of the class was out on their own — doing their practice teaching, while the other half launched into another year of note-taking, reference reading, and term papers. Such matters as class pictures, the selling of Christmas cards, etc., occupied our leisure time as the weeks flew by. The Supper Hike, as always, started the year off well, with Pepsi and Pat performing in their own unique style, and with a menu comprised of hot dogs, cocoa, Hershey Bars (a war-time casualty) and all the fixin ' s. Hershey Bars weren ' t the only thing to make a come-back to campus life. The male students were re-appear ing and life was rapidly taking on a normal tone. Dances and parties flourished, and by the end of January we had all completed our training and were well on the way to reaching our goal. By this time, graduation details were uppermost in our minds, what with a banquet and dance to be taken care of, and several of our members had already secured positions for. the next year. In spite of all of this, however, we still had time to think about our lives as students and what those lives had meant. Three years of study on a quiet campus while the world around us was being torn apart hadn ' t always been easy. Sometimes it was hard not to do something more worth-while for the war effort. However, this last, this final year had confirmed all of the hopes of peace we had been clinging to, and the post-college years ahead presented us with a real challenge, which can best be expressed by the words of our college motto — Not to be ministered unto, but to minister.
