tke L a££ a- i4 Greetings: As you go forth to begin your work as teachers you will find that facts were never more important than they are today; you will find, too, that students must be informed and trained to think. But these things are just means to ends. The test of a liberal education is to be found in the attitude of mind developed in the learner rather than in the mere accumulation of facts and the mastery of techniques. The question is not, how much informati on has the person, nor how skillful is he? The question is is the person socially minded; what use does he make of his social privileges; how does he meet his social obligations and civic responsibilities? If we fail to cultivate a liberal and courageous spirit, tolerance and open-mindedness, a genuine desire to improve humanity, our failure is complete. There is no real virtue in mere stores of knowledge, mere erudition. Books and libraries are better repositories of facts than are the minds of men. Let the motto of your college, Not to be ministered unto but to minister, be the foundation upon which you will build your educational philosophy. May you enioy success and happiness in your chosen profession.
