r. eaching today is a direct challenge to young people in whom the desire to do creative work is strong; it calls for a type of skill that makes of it an art. Teaching as an art not only requires the technical skill that one may acquire, but it demands that one bring all his emotions and imagination to the task, thus lifting it out of a monotonous routine. Our experience proves the adaptability of well- educated young America to the changes and chances of life in peace or war. We have evidence from the battlefield that the man with imagination and understanding, is the man who meets the problem successfully. He understands the whole history of his people and the thought of their greatest men wears an armor of the spirit not easily broken through. If our schools believe in their task they should not let them- selves lightly be turned into induction centers. That is not their job. There is good reason to believe that they will yield the Army better material if they perform their work efficiently and well, leaving military preparation to the professionals. What America needs from her schools for peace or war is the development of free minds in free men. Let the schools realize that this is the basic training that they and only they can provide. Bridgewater has provided this training; it is yours to share with those who are to be your pupils, our citizens in the new America. May I wish for you every success in the profession.
