f - - Alpha for 1943 STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE BRIDGEWATER MASSACHUSETTS JOHN J. KELLY President r. eaching today is a direct challenge to young people in whom the desire to do creative work is strong; it calls for a type of skill that makes of it an art. Teaching as an art not only requires the technical skill that one may acquire, but it demands that one bring all his emotions and imagination to the task, thus lifting it out of a monotonous routine. Our experience proves the adaptability of well- educated young America to the changes and chances of life in peace or war. We have evidence from the battlefield that the man with imagination and understanding, is the man who meets the problem successfully. He understands the whole history of his people and the thought of their greatest men wears an armor of the spirit not easily broken through. If our schools believe in their task they should not let them- selves lightly be turned into induction centers. That is not their job. There is good reason to believe that they will yield the Army better material if they perform their work efficiently and well, leaving military preparation to the professionals. What America needs from her schools for peace or war is the development of free minds in free men. Let the schools realize that this is the basic training that they and only they can provide. Bridgewater has provided this training; it is yours to share with those who are to be your pupils, our citizens in the new America. May I wish for you every success in the profession. Who can forget how weird we looked during that horrible initiation week when we wore rag curls and yellow ribbons a la Pocahontas, white stockings, and huge cardboard signs. The boys had it easy with their green neckties and freshmen caps. We were a little bewildered and self- conscious that week, but not the least bit daunted. We beheld the haughty seniors march into chapel and were only mildly impressed. We performed every distasteful task assigned us by the sophomores without batting an eyelash. In fact, we were even then showing signs of becoming one of the most exceptional classes Bridgewater ever had! Remember how many times we were forced to deliver the Gettysburg Address, to sing the Alma Mater, to hold doors open for snooty upper-classmen, and give all sorts of humiliating performances on the front steps of the Administration Building? But we weathered that week intact and settled down to do some studying, or at least we intended to. After initiation, things began to go more smoothly. In December we had our Freshman Party when we really got to know all the members of our own class. Then came our first Christmas banquet with all its Yuletide fun and gaiety. In January, Mardi Gras was held and scores of freshmen went to pay their respects to its handsome King and lovely Queen, Lee Fleming and Helen Judge. But no sooner was Mardi Gras over than mid- years were upon us. High school cramming was a cinch compared to this. Exam week seemed to last a month, but as was to be expected the freshmen didn ' t do badly at all, and several of our more gifted members attained Scholastic Honors. In March, we presented our chapel program of Freshman Life, and who can ever forget those scenes of typical speech and music classes. We were actors as well as intellectuals! April brought with it the Freshman Tea in Tillinghast where freshman girls used to good effect the social graces they had duteously acquired in Miss Pope ' s Social Usage classes. Then came our Freshman Social with Spring Fever as its theme. It couldn ' t have been more appropriate, for we had long since snapped out of our October habit of studying. And finally came June when Bridge- water held its beautiful centennial program in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the college. For the first time, we freshmen really came to know and be proud of the tradition that was Bridgewater, and to understand more clearly its background and its ideals. Came September; the energetic and enthusiastic class of ' 43 were now sopho- mores. John Henry Fitzgerald was again our president, and we were all set for a Ol } big year. What an initiation we gave the new freshmen! Revenge was sweet! In our newly acquired wisdom, we informed them that exams were terrific, the instruc- tors — Simon Legrees, and the courses — useless. It gave us a new sense of dignity to watch them hold doors open for us and carry our books, besides doing all the other menial tasks we invented. In December, we put on our Gay Nineties Social, one of the highlights of the social year. We followed this up in January with another social success, our Sophomore-Junior Prom, The Mid-year Mirage. In March we presented our chapel program, Truth and Consequences. Joseph Comerford, that connoisseur of genial wit, served as Master of Ceremonies and the class of ' 43 again rang the bell for tops in assembly entertainment. The year, as a whole, seemed to pass more quickly than our freshman one. The newness of college life had worn off, and we became more or less engulfed in the routine of classes, quizzes, term papers, and exams. But we still found time for cokes and milk shakes at the drugstore, fast games of tennis on lower campus, dancing in the gym at noon, and a geog trip in the spring. Our sophomore year wasn ' t quite as eventful as freshman one had been, but we managed to keep from stagnating. And in June, we looked forward eagerly to our Junior year. We really came into our own that year. We had attained the lofty status of upperclassmen and now spoke on equal terms to seniors and instructors alike. Most of the girls had acquired Little Sisters, a prop to egos already inflated. Were we ever as gullible and high-schoolish as they we wondered. Impossible! i Training School was the big event of the year. For some it brought eight weeks of slow torture, but for the majority of us it was an enlightening experience. As teachers for eight weeks we learned more through practical experience than we had in two years as students. But Training School had its humorous aspects, too, and most of us had a lot of fun. Can we ever forget the music lessons we tried in vain to teach for Miss Rand? Music was cer- tainly not one of our strong points, and it was with a feeling of relief that we again entered classes in the college. In December, however, the com- parative peace and tranquillity of our college life was rudely shattered. We were at war! Bridgewater rallied at once to the emergency. Some of us left for active duty; others enlisted in various branches of the Reserves. We took First Aid and all manner of defense courses. We had prac- tice blackouts and air raids. And gradually we began to adjust ourselves to living in a nation at war. Christinas Banquet was soon upon us and we tried to forget Europe in the jubilant cheer and joy of the Christmas season. In January we held our Sophomore- Junior Prom, The Sleighbell Serenade, and due to the enthusuastic support of both classes it was a big success, both finan- cially and socially. Before we knew it, elections had rolled around and we began electing those who would lead us in our Senior year. The final results couldn ' t have revealed more capable leaders, for we had elected Luella Eaton as President of S.C.A., Amy Went- worth, Dormitory Council President, Paul- ine Hey, President of Day Students, and Lea Hearn, President of W.A.A. Suddenly it was June and for the first time we were part of the Daisy Chain. 32 } We felt older, more mature, and a little sad. We were almost Seniors and the realization was a bit frightening. And now we really are Seniors. We have outgrown the cocky self-confidence we flaunted as sophomores; the careless, glib tongues we wagged as juniors. We are beginning to attain a little of the wisdom that only Time brings and a little of its reserve. We have not lost our sense of humor nor our love of laughter. This is well because our class faces a grim future which will afford no opportunity for waste of talents. During Senior Week, we wore our caps and gowns for the first time; gone now was the air of haughty dignity that seniors conventionally display and in its place we felt only an awareness of our own inade- quacies and a realization of the responsi- bilities and sacrifices we were yet to face. Thus the War continued to color the thoughts of all of us during the year. Our sports and social activities were seri- ously curtailed. Through practice, air raids and dim-outs became a matter of course; life was not all defense routine. In December we had a better-than- ever Christmas Banquet followed by an evening of fun and entertainment such as we ' ll never forget. Then in January came the culminat- ing social event of our four years, the Senior Dinner Dance. Those of us who attended had a wonderful time in spite of the innumerable transportation difficulties that presented themselves. During the course of the year, several of our classmates had left for the armed forces, and in February we held a farewell banquet for the Army, Navy, and Air Corps Reservists who were called up at that time. Those who joined the services in their senior year were Bob Fox, Randall Powers, Bill Campbell, Joe Comerford, Jimmy Lynch, Jerome Nathanson, Jimmy Nolan, Joe O ' Donnell, Jim Garvey, Eddie Cheromcha, Tommy Hurley, Joe Killory, and Ralph Shapiro. Classes seemed empty and drab after that, and many of the girls talked of joining the WAACS or the WAVES. From then until June, campus extra- curricular activities were reduced to a minimum, and even many of the customary events of senior week were omitted. At Graduation we were a class reduced to al- most half of our original numbers. Though positions promised to be plentiful, most of us looked into the future with little or no anticipation. Our nation was in the midst of a costly war, and we felt momentarily bewildered in the midst of a gigantic war effort. But there were those of us who looked to the future with a broader vision, realizing that ours, too, will be a task of true patriotism, for it is we who will mold the youths of today into the men who will make the peace and build the post war world. In them lies the hope of future generations; it rests with us to make them worthy of that trust. Ellen Mercer, ' 43 {33 } Class Ode Our college years are memories now; We ' ve bid our last farewell. We go to meet a challenged world Whose future none can tell. . In stricken lands, our fellow men Are crushed in fear and shame. They plead with us to keep alive Their freedom ' s dying flame. We must accept that challenge now; They shall not ask in vain! On the ruins of those ravaged lands We pledge to build again. We ' ll build a new and better world On truths we long have known, That our sons may reap the fruits of Peace From seeds that we have sown.
