Catherine ' s short stay at Bridgewater has made us truly believe that she has accepted Carlyle ' s admonition that thought will not work except in silence. As a well-balanced individual, she is willing at all times to share her serious moments; as a keen appreciator of wit and humor, she invites that particular contagion which we all like to feel at times. 27
