Our 21st Year v.] The 1982 Unitas staff feels privi- leged to be able to congratulate B-R on its twenty-first anniversary year. Our school has gained local and state- wide recognition for both our curricu- lar and extra-curricular activities. B-R has sent its graduates on to some of the finest colleges in the country. The fact that it continues to do so is a testimony to the faculty, to the administration, and to the student body, For twenty-one years this school has enthusiastically received the freshmen of two towns, educated them well, and changed their lives dramatically for the better. Few schools in our knowing have done so fine a job. The founding fathers did well. They designed a school for peo- ple: based on the idea of treating stu- dents as j eople. Your graduation from B-R represents ach ievement . Congratulations . The importance of education will become more evident as you continue to gain in knowledge and grow towards maturity. The process of education is critical to your survival in our complex world and also serves to insure the security of a free society. Thomas Jefferson was one of the greatest advocates of strong public education. He had the foresight to project the consequences of ignorance. Jefferson stated, If a nation expects to be ignorant and free in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be. Public education has guided you away from ignorance by embarking you on a journey towards understanding. Public education stands for something - it does not fall for anything. It does not trickle down from an elite class to a common class. It simply is an opportunity for all. It is too precious to be lost in political retoric; protect it, cherish it, and above all give the gift of this opportunity to the next generation.
