Coach Leta lost eight letter winners from last year's district championship team, and consequently anticipated a rebuilding year. However, much to his surprise the team got off to an outstanding start with a 5-2 record in the first part of the season. Due to injuries and some very improved opponents fSouth Plainfield, Ridge, Somerville, Bound Brook, Eastl, the record slipped to 5-6-2. The team made a late surge winning three out of its last four meets to wind up with a record of 8-7-2. Although it was not an outstanding record, the team was able to finish with a winning record in what could be termed a very difficult season. lt should be mentioned that the team increased its number of meets to 17 this year and met some of the best teams in the state, such as Piscataway, Hunterdon Central, and Delaware Valley, all of which are perennial state powerhouses. West was the defending champion going into the district 18 tournament this year. West placed fourth with two champions, Jeff Mase and Greg Lord. John Ward was a runner-up. Freshman Drew Wurst and ,lunior Don Hutchins placed third and fourth respectively. Jeff Mase, the star of the team, won his third district championship, third Christmas championship, and completed his third perfect undefeated dual meet season. ln post season competition Greg Lord and Jeff Mase entered the regional tournament held at Hunterdon Central. Both ,leff and Greg captured regional titles which enabled them to be eligible for the state championships held at Princetonis ladwin Gym. Greg Lord was pitted against Newtonis ,lohn Zwieg last yearls runner up, and was beaten.
