Another Successful Year West's Field Hockey Team showed their excellent ability by beating their first challenger, 2-1, on scores by Sue Fink and Regina Alonzo. They started out with a new coach, Mrs. Yohn, and a determined team. This year's forward line was made up of two seniorsg Jeanne Kotula and Sandy Jenstrom and three juniorsg Sue Fink, Regina Alonzo, and Roseanne Palermo. All were returning varsity players. Debbie Buhl and Sue Steinhauser, both goalies, will also be leaving the team. Debbie had a total of 48 saves throughout the season. ln the defense were fullbacks Kathy Salerno and Georgeann DeLuca, both sophomores and new to varsity. West's outstanding halfbacks were sophomore Marlene Young, and juniors Carol Mutchler and Gail Mueller. Because of the combined efforts of the offense and defense, the team went throughout the season undefeated. The decision for the Mid-State Champsw was a game between West and East. The game was tied for a while and there were some close plays, but Regina Alonzo finally scored two goals to shut-out East 2-0 and give West the Mid-State title. The chance for the county and state title was lost when West fell to Manville and Hopewell. This year's substitutes, sophomores Sandy Furda and Lisa Lare, and juniors Linda Powelson and Terrie Gallagher pulled through for West when they had to. With these and other fine players, it looks like West is going to have a strong team for quite a while. Sue Fink fabove rightj follows through. RIGHT: We won againl.
