t I I The East varsity swim team compiled another successful record this season by finishing with a 10-2.-1 record. The high point of the mermen's year, however, was their victory in the Somerset County Inter-Scholastic Swim Meet in which eleven teams from the county participated. Leading the team to such a fine record this year were senior co-captains Charlie Iohnsrud and Peter VanNuis. Pete broke and reestablished quite a few school records during the season in both the 50-yard and 100-yard Freestyle events, while Charlie followed suit in the 200-yard Individual Medley event. In the County meet Charlie was a triple winner receiving gold med- als in the Individual Medley, 400-yard Freestyle and 400-yard Freestyle Relay events. Pete won the 50-yard Freestyle event as well as anchoring the winning Freestyle Relay while also taking a bronze medal in the 100-yard Freestyle. In addition senior Jim Merriam and Bruce Kasten alternated between the Butter- fly and Freestyle events. Jim was also a constant performer in the Freestyle Relay. Senior Mark Patterson turned in consistent times in the Backstroke, while seniors Bob Mann and Kevin Trask contributed in various events especially in the Wat- chung Hills and Mid-state Carnival Relays. Unfortunately these fine swimmers will be graduating but in departing they leave a fine legacy. Another senior who will be sorely missed is manager Maureen Lennon whose skills of organization and attention to detail added greatly to the stability and success of the team. Sophomores Eric Bodnar and Tommy Eckert compiled points consistently throughout the season in their events in addition to gaining recognition in the County meet, Freshmen Biff Von Fabrice, a real surprise this year, won a silver medal in the County competition right behind teammate Iohnsrud. In the Mid- state Relay Meet East clinched a total of 3 gold medal finishes and 3 silver meal finishes from a total of ten events. In the State Meet Peter VanNuis took a third place in the 100-yard and a fifth place in the 50-yard Freestyle Events. The 400-yard Freestyle Relay team, starring Pete VanNuis, Charlie Iohnsurd, Eric Bodner and Jim Merian, won a third place. The team thus ended an excellent season with a tie for third place in the State Meet.
