This first day of May in the year of our Lord One Thousand mine hundred and Fifty-one. - lsEALD ISTORY i H tg, an E In the fall of 1939, five little innocent children with smiles on their faces and unaware of the things to come toddled up the hill to their school of learning. we were: Richard Carlson, Clark Cole, David Campbell, and Barbara Barnhart. Clark Cole being the only one having gone all twelve years at B. H. S. , Jessie Brown guided our foot-steps the first year. Upon returning the following year, we found Miss Ione Swanlund, as our instructor and it was al- so in this year that we were Joined by Dick Brawdy and Lyle Williams. Florence McCre1ght was our third grade teacher. Our fourth year found us in a different room and with a new teacher, Vera Wollenhaupt. In the middle of the year Barbara left us to continue school at Omaha. Miss Wollenhaupt returned to see us through the fifth grade. Margaret Jones was our instructor during our sixth and seventh grades. Our eighth grade found us with Murriell Shatava as our teacher. We had three new additions to our class: Max Hurd, Delmar Williams, and lohn Vetter- lck. During the year Beverly Wyllie and Barbara Barnhart joined us. Through the years we had the usual trials and tribulations of elementary students. It was a happy day for us when we received our eighth grade diplomas which cert- ified that we were now ready to begin high school. High School here we come! In the fall of l9h7, fourteen shy and meek freshmen entered the halls of dear old B. H. S. we were: Myrna Cass, Helen Carl, beverly Wyllie, Phyllis Christensen, Barbara Barnhart, Phyllis Jean Campen Clark Cole, Jack McDermott, David Campbell, Marion Saylor, Kohn Vet- terick, Dick Brawdy, Max Hurd, and Delmar Williams. Our sponsor was Dick Clark. We were duly initiated into high school by the class of l9b8, who were very generous with the paddles, chocolate-covered soap and all other activities that make up initiation. During the year Phyllis Christensen left us to begin married life. Our Sophomore year found us with only twelve members having lost Marion Saylor who decided to continue school at Greenfield. Our sponsor was Mrs. Golz. During the year John Vetterick left us to continue school at Indian- ola. We entered our Junior year full of high spirits for we were now upper- classmen. We were happy to have John Vetterick back with us. The main events of the year were our Junior-Senior banquet which was held at Creston and our Junior Class Play, 'Faith, Hope, and Flarity'. We received our class rings this year and of course we thought they were the prettiest to be found. Our sponsor was Larry Love. At the beginning of the Senior year we had eleven in our class,Dav1d Camp bell having moved to Greenfield. Our first undertaking was the initiation of the Freshmen. The high school annual was our special project of the year. Our class flower is the white rose and our class colors are fushia and white. Our notto is, 'Out of the Harbor into the Sea'. Some of the high-lights of the year was our Skip Day and Senior Class Play. Mr. Jones was our sponsor. Our last four years have been very happy ones. Our teachers have done every- thing that could be done to make life pleasant. Our associations with one another have been pleasant and we have made friendships that will continue for the rest of our lives. With this we bid farewell to B. H. S. CLASS PRGRHECY Q CLASS PROPHECY In 1965, a group of B. H. S. graduated of 1951 gathered together to see what each had done for the past lb years. A picnic lunch was held at the Bridgewater park to climax the day. The day was spent talking of classmates. They found that Delmar Williams had married and lives on a turkey farm in Kentucky. Hia pastime is spent singing hillbilly songs! Those music lessons did come in handy after all dldn't they, Delmar? Dick Brawdy wasn't able to be there as it was time for his program over K. W. A. A. He's their favorite singer on that station in Chicago. Mrs. Brawdy, the former Shirley Fletcher, works at their home in Chicago. Someone has to care for the children. Much to everyones surprise we found that Max Hurd ls yet single but has plenty of women on the string. iSame old Maxi He still lives on a farm just south of town. Jack McDermott and his wife, the former Marlene Knlep, live on that McDermott ranch raising angus cattle. They just welcomed their second se' of twins so both parents were absent. We wonder why? Somehow they got on the subject of teaching and Clark spoke up and said he liked it very much. He teaches high school at Red Oak while his wife teaches Junior high. Of course 'Grandma' Beaman cares for the little Cole baby while the parents are at school. John Vetteriok is in Indianola working in a factory helping Uncle Sam build planes. Everyone was surprised to hear he's not married and says be never will be. We wonder! Beverly Wyllie, now Mrs. Jake Pots, is keeping house for Jake and her 3 little girls, all having red hair. They now live in Iowa City where Jake is employed. Myrna Cass works in Omaha as a typest and filing clerk for Commercial Extension. She's not married yet but had a big 'sparkler' on the third finger of her left hand. Lucky guy!!! Mrs. Bill Harris iBarbara Barnhartl keeps house for B111 on their farm by Anita. I guess they're raising lots of kids. Baby goats that is! At this point a baby started crying. Who should go over and pick him up? None other than Helen Carl, now Mrs. Dick Johnson. They're living on a farm by Richland. Last but not least we come to Phyllis Jean Campen. She's now Mrs. Max Jacobson, having celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary yesterday. They're living on the Jacobson farm north of Fontanelle and have four little boys to make the home complete. 1-4vlnrq,,, .. .,.....- -rf:-WN A lllIllllH3 I X I N 'Hn.'.qf 'ff'i1j1 ' 5 1 35:5 5 -' F f'l'.- , K +131 ,IW , ,1': .f. .' ffl' Y .f . Our main events this year was Freshmen initiation, which the Seniors had a part in of course, and a Halloween picnic and dance sponsored by the Freshmen class. If f , VJ' ' 1 5N'. X Noiff-U Wv rev I Early this fall we BIG seniors decided while we were initiating the 'Freehies' we would have them write an essay on 'Why I Like The Seniore'. We had fine results, but we thought Euclid Sullivan had a very good one. It is as follows: As I set down to compose this great work of the year I am reminded of a story my first grade teacher read to the class about a little boy named George She was trying to teach us to always tell the truth. For eight long years I have made every effort to do this, but now as I venture into a school world fill- ed with doubt and seniors, I fear I might ere slightly, as I tell why I like the Senlor's. However, I have very little to lose as I am writing this on an envelope sslavsged from the wastepeper basket by Clark Cole's desk and with a pencil loaned to me by Johnny Vetterick which he has used for the last three years, lor has he used it??l. I have a special liking for my good friends Max Hurd and Myrna Cass for their thoughfulness of refreshments for the Freshman. As I am a lover of good music I can not help but listen to Phyllis, Helen, Barbara, and Beverly as they keep a steady rhythm of gum chewing while Delmar keeps a steady time for them with the rattle of his Chevy as he comes a- round the bend on two wheels. As for Jack and Dick special mention should be made of them. Their imitation of Frank Sinatra as they make their evenings trip to the school park. The kindness of the Senior class as they offered we miserable Fresh- man gum Tuesday reminds me of two Irishman, Pat and Mike. Pat, the owner of a hen with cholera gave it to Mike. The next day Mike returned it to Pat saying 'I'll be just as good as you are,' and gave it hack to Pat. At the close I will remind you that any resemblance to classes living or dead is purely fictitious and should be regarded as trash and this masterpiece of noneence thrown into the bottom of the wsstepaper basket where it belongs. Euclid. Junior High Room The Junior High Room was again opened this year with nine students and Neva Sinner as teacher. Eight grade: Alberta Bloom, Robert Golly, and Judy Johnson. Seventh grade: Vivian Bloom, John Gipple, Lois Golly, Ronnie Kniep, and Norma Rechtenbach. Sixth grade: Donnie hwmbrran. Changes were made in the civics, health and history texts. A new set of Semi-Contour maps is an added attraction to our room, besides being very useful in the teach- ing of the social studies. A new set of encyclopedias was also added to our library. As our part in the annual fall carnival, we presented the one act comedy, 'Billy's First Date,' which we feel was a success. We held a Christ- mas party with a gift exchange. All the Junior High girls and boys are out for basdetball. Three of the boys have participated in inter-school games. The girls are still hoping for a game in the near future. Norma Rechtenbaoh and Donnie McMorran were absent the day that the picture above was taken. Delmar: 'It says here they have found a sheep in the Hamalaya Mountains that can run L5 miles an hour.' Coach: 'Well, it would take a lamb like that to keep up with Mary now a days.' A., 1 Intermediate Room When school began, Barbara Colbert was one of our Fifth Graders. She moved away in December leaving Jane Gipple, Marlene Kordick, Mary Metzger and John Waage in that grade. Fourth grade: Jerry Bloom, Rita Gipple, Betty Cass, Judith Ford, and Sandra Gipple. Third grade: Gary Firch, Frances Cass, and John Conaway. We enjoyed parties on Halloween, Christmas, and Valentines day. Especially did we enjoy inviting our mothers, grandmothers, and little sisters and brothers in December to see our playlet, The Christmas Fairy and Scrooge, We presented each guest with a small gift which we had made. We have also enjo- yed many birthday parties. Our new library books are highly appreciated and we have read all or them. We have carried our projects in some of our subjects and organized a club which will help us in many ways. In the spring we had nature study hikes and a picnic in the woods, with our teacher Miss Maude Chapman, who enjoyed them as much as the children did. Primary Room Twenty-two pupils, divided evenly between grades one and two, with fourteen boys and eight girls, were assigned to our room for this yeer's work and play. Aside from our regular work for the year our attention has been fixed upon the progress of the construction of our much needed improvement, which had its inception on the minds of and the plans made by the men who were serving the community three years ago as promoters of school aflalrs. we hope tc express our appreciation cy marked effort on our part in our regular work and in demons- trating that we know how to live in our nicer quarters and exercise proper care of them. we are very grateful to the community for their generous approval of the bonds and those who have put much time and effort into the completion of the project which has added so much to our comfort and that of the entire school. We are expecially grateful to our present local Board of .education for our new white oak floor, it is a beauty and a daily delight and a daily delight and was badly needed. The teacher in this GBPBIUMOHU is Mrs. Lillie B. Gibson. Recently we were enabled to acquire some new books for our already generous chlldren's library, among them are a nice copy or The Real Mother Goose illustrated by Blanche Fisher Wright, and splendidly illustrated copies of the life of Abraham Lincoln and of George Wahington. These have lithographic illustrations by the authors Ingri k Edgar d'Auleire and they make the character seem very much alive to little children. Our children had a very minor part ln the Carnival program. Two ot the fl ' rst grade chlldren, Monica McCall and Stevie Frich served as attendants at the coronatlon of the King and Queen, Marlene Kniep and Dick Brawdy. At the Christmas Season each department produced its own program, and our department gave a playlet for their mothers and little brothers and sisters. It was e ti l d ' ' n t e A Tired Mother s Chrlstmas Dream. We also enjoyed a Christmas tree with a happy exchange of gifts. Our attendance through the year has been marvelously good, there being weeks after weeks of perfect attendance and punctuallty which is a rine testim- onial for the mothers who have charge or the little ones. Another matter of note has been the advent of the new playgroune equi- pment which ls a source of deep satisfaction to all the children and especially those of our department. Larry Buckner and Terry Wyllie was absent from school the day this picture was taken. E. .Carnival King and Queen October 27 was the date of our Annual carnival. We feel it was a great success and were well pleased with the proceeds. We had the usual program including a one-act play by the Junior High and a one-act play by some of the High School girls. The Girls Glee Club sang and dramatlzed 'My Merry 0ldsmobile.' The lower grades and Intermediate rooms also participated in the program. The stands and concessions which we had were Ring the Duck, Dart Throw, Novelty Stand, Baseball Pitch, and Basketball. The Home Economics girls also had the Snack Inn where you could get something to eat or drink. Since bingo had been outlawed and we couldn't have that, we solicited and had an auction. Although it couldn't take the place of bingo, we were well pleased and wish to sincerely thank all those who contributed. Tickets were sold on a table and lamp as door prize which was won by Ruth Garslde. Tickets which were sold on King and Queen votes also gave the holder of the lucky ticket a chance on a cute little red and white plush elephant, which was won by Lonnie Scott. Dick Brawdy was voted King and Marlene Kniep as Queen. The grand finale was a dance at the gym. Fred 'Pop' Krlslnger played. It was a grand success with a large crowd enjoying themselves until a rather late hour. During intermission we had a cake auction of some very good and beautiful cakes. We wish to thank everyone who helped make this carnival a success. X: L-A YA Qf. Among them are canning, the different cuts of meats, home management, personality traits and cooking. We have sew- ing and a few other units to take up before the end of the year. At our carn ival we had a food stand which proved quite successful. We have a home econ- omics club and have chosen the following officers: Ruth Raasch ------------------- President Jo Golly --------- ---- ----- Vice-President Norma Sinner ---- - - ---- Sec. k Trees. Marlene Kniep ----------------- Reporter The girls in home economics this year are: Connie Campbell, Ruth Garside, Marlene Thompson, Margaret Waage, Mary Lou Dwyer, Jackie Day, Elma Rechtenbach, Norma Sinner, Joy McCann, Marlene Kniep, Jo Golly, Joyce John- son, Joan Warrior, Ruth Raasoh, Laura Cron, and Marie Raasch. Those girls making up the squad were as forwards Norma Sinner, Ruth Garside, Jean Bond, Marlene Kniep, Marie Raasch, Mary Lou Dwyer, and Joann Warrior. At the guard end were: Myrna Cass, Beverly Wyllie, Elma Rechtenbach, Jo Golly, Helen Carl, and Jackie Day. Others participating were Phyllis Campen and Joyce Johnson. Our record for the whole season including the tournaments was 9 victories and 10 defeats. We made 697 points during the season for an average of 37p0ih l per game. Norma Sinner had a seasonal tetal of 273 points for high soorer Marlene Kniep made 2h6 points, while Jean Bond had 63 with Marie Raasch making 58 and Ruth Garside making L8 points. Some of our games were played with the better teams in the Southwestern section of the state such as Richland, Zion, Orient, and Prescott. On Deo 5th we beat Prescott, which was then the eleventh top team in the state. Zion also was rated as one of the upper teams in the state when we played them. All these games were very close and we feel we did very well considering the competition we played. Marlene, Norma, Beverly, and M rna recieved special honors of being on the honorable mentioned list in the county. The outlook for the Bulldogs in the future looks very good. There are a lot of good promising underclassmen coming up.
