' ' A ' C I O : . - N , - I N N' : D 0 2 0 ' nr l , V D A A O - QYQSKD Sfigforqa In the fall of 1937 six little boys and girls marched up the hill and became 'students' We were Evelyn Showers, Dean Rechtenbach, Dorothy Roos, Francis Stewart, Richard Williams, and Joy Cole Of these six, only Dorothy and Joy have gone through the twelve years together Lois Walton guided our footsteps the first year Unfortunately Francis Stewart moved away leaving only five in our class The next year we found ourselves in the second grade with Jessie Brown as our instructor Evelyn Showers moved away during our third year and we also lost Dean Rechtenbach Delores Ruch and Wayne Hughes joined us this year so we still had five in our class We soon were in the fourth grade with a different room and a new teacher, Winifred Long Vera Wollenhaupt was our instructor in the fifth, sixth, and seventh grades In our eighth year, Mrs Arthur Jones was our teacher During this year Richard Williams moved to Vinton We had the usual number of parties every year Valentine, Halloween, Christmas, etc I'm sure we'll always remember those dear old school days After going through the usual trials and tribu lations of elementary students quarrels, pranks and punishments, appearing in programs scrubbed and shining in new dresses and ribbons, long pants and ties, here came eighth grade graduation We each received blue diplomas and were we proud High School here we come ' Our sponsor in our Freshman year was Mrs Gertrude Patterson During this year we were merely 'green' and didn't ac complish anything of great importance Those in our class were Delores Pfundheller, marilyn Schrader, Tom McDermott, Dorothy Roos, Joy Cole, Wayne Hughes, Marllyn Williams, and Delores Ruch Our sponsor in our Sophomore year was Robert Preston Marilyn Williams left us this year, decidlng to continue at Greenfield The main event in our Junior year was our class play, 'Chintz Cottage,' Oh, the things that took place during that class play We definitely learned still had our original eight We also got our class rings this year, of course they were the finest to be found Iws Laura Bailey, who was our sponsor helped us plan the Junior Senior Banquet The banquet was held at the Iowana Hotel in Creston The dining room was decorated with bright crepe paper and in one corner was a small windmill with a rock garden around it The table had one long row of blrght colored tulips All these effects were used to bring out the theme of our banquet, Holland At the beginning of our Senior year we had sever in our class, Marilyn Wllliams havirg moved The initlatlon of the Freshmen was our first under taklng We found it great fun for us but we feel the poor Freshmen thought differently The high school annual was our special project during the year The highlight of the year was our skip day We went to the Drake Relays and had a very enjoyable time Our Senior Class Play, 'Rainbow Cottage', was held at the close of the year we will always be grateful to our parents and teachers for making it possible for us to arrlve at thls iunction of our educational career O what the words 'ad lib' meant. 's 'V' if x. f' 4 Man. .Q ,.,..v ' 40' 'Fab L s., There were nine of us who entered high school as poor green Freshnen and who spent the first week barping lnto the wrong rooms in search of our class We were Laura Cron, Sherry Gionle, Elma Rechtenbach, farie Raasch, Ruth Raasch, Joann Warrior, Lonnie Scott, D1ck Pcrorran, and Pamor Rechtenbach Piss TcKahan lS our class sponsor and we elected officers as follows President Toann 'arrior V1ce Presldent Lonnle Scott Secretary Treasurer Narie Raasch Reporter Ruth Raasch One of the outstanding events of our freshman year was tle inltiation to the Senlors In the evenlng the rlrr school was invited to a party, at Wl1Ch we furnished the entertainment, spurred on by the paddle wieldlng Sen iors We are now awaitlng our senlor year when we wlll have a chance to use the paddles o the ooor freshles of '52 The subgects whlch we are taking this year are General Sclence, orld History, Erglish I, and Algebra The entire class part1c1pated in sports except Laura Cron who was unable to play basketball due to a broken arn Sherry Gipnle and Wlma Rechtenbach were on the girls basketball squad and Lonnie Scott and Dick Iclorran were managers for the boys squad 'QW Junior High had an enrollment of 13 during the year, but Dorls Poore moved away at Christmas time, leavlng an enrollment of 12 They were Larry Bauer, Frank Cole, Jacquelyn Day, Ruth Garside, Lewis Giople, rarlene Khlep, Paul Prichard, Edward Sshrader, and Iorma Slnner all in the eighth grade Sally Campbell, Dean Cass, and Kay Giople in the seventh grade Our teacher was Mrs Nurriel Shatava In the carnival program we presented a musical number, 'Sunbonnet Sue W All State pupils tests were given January ll We were hosts to rural students from Washington and Jackson townships In February we had a picture contest judged on originality, neataess, mounting, and coloring The winners were Kay Gipple, rorma Sinner, and Sally Campbell Basketball was our main sport activity Our girls were included in the high school training program with Norma and Marlene making the squad wayne Hughes took over the coaching for our boys Although we didn't win all our games we did have fun Ruth Garside and Kay Glpole were chosen from our room to help Barbara cheer lead Current magazines found weekly on our reading table were the following Current Event, Young America, Junior Review,and Young Citizen as well as The Grade Teacher and Normal Instructor. Those chosen to represent our room in the spelling contest held at Green- field were Ruth Garside and Marlene Knieo. Marle1e and Kay kept a perfect spelling record throughout the year. Marlene has had perfect attendance this year.Activities included parties and entertainlng our Mothers on St.Patr1cks Day. Vs K' I We Q I , S We have twelve enrolled this year. In fifth grade: Norma Rechtenbach, Ronnie Kniep, John Gipple and Billy Lents. The fourth grade: Donny McMor- ran and Tommy Lents. The third grade: Jane Gipple, Nancy Davis, Sue Camp- bell, Mary Metzger, Ronda McCall and Larry Lents. Nancy moved away in'the spring. Everyone enjoyed parties on Halloween and Christmas. On Valentine's Dey, we invited our mothers and little brothers and sisters. We used the things we had learned in school for our program. It consisted of music, which Mrs Campbell had taught us, Geography pictures and stories which we had worked out in a Geography project, stories about birds which we had studies, choral reading, and some health exercises which we did with the victrola All Fifth Grade children have written the names of states in the United States and their capitals on an outline map They made a very thorough study of the United States this year Fourth Grade have studied about oioneer days in the United States The stories they read were extremely interestlng Of course we all want to use good English If we don't, we write it on a piece of paper and out it in an error box We have Club , we open the box and find out the mimakes have made Our treasurer counts the money we bring which gives him lesson in Arithmetic Our spelling chart looked fine There were more perfect lessons than those with words missed Exoerlments in Sclence vere interestlng, we wlsh we could have done more We have learned to know many blrds, which have come to eat the food we put on our feeding board The D1CtUT6S of many other blrds are on our bulletln board We wlll know many of our summer birds when they come back from the South Our bulletin boards have been decorated in keeping wlth each month Third Grade made the March olctures of wlndmllls and tulios Fummq On the opening of school in September our department had ten pupils dlvided between first and second grades and has remalned the same through the months except for one slight change Grade one had Johnny Conaway, Gary Firch, and Roger Gioole The girls were Fra1ces Cass and Carolyn Golz Joe Moore was enrolled in grade one for one month Grade two had one boy, Dick Golz, son of our superintendent Our group enjoys real work and plenty of reading, penmanshio, numbers, and language as well as lots of fun wlth games in our room and also in the gym We also liked art and parties, and sometimes entertain our mothers Our teacher was Mrs Lillie Gibson She had about the most fun of any of us We took oart in the carnival in October when we helped with the musical DTOUTGM giV1UP several selectlons with our Rhythm Band We also conducted the FlSh Pond for the carnlval wh1ch netted several dollars for the fund For the School ChT1StmdS Play, 'Why the Chimes Rangn the chlldren of our department sketched the WlFdOW for the churck ln the back drop of the scenery facu ywash ngtor's blrthday we entertalned our mothers, grandmothers, an 0 0 ' n H A . , a I The girls are: Judy Ford, Betty Lou Cass, Sandra Gipple and Rita Gipple. . They were: Margaret Bower, Viola Ahnen, Kathryn Gipple, Myrna Cass, Beverly Wyllie, Helen Carl, Barbara Barnhart, and Phyllis Campen. These girls served a very delicious Carnival supper in the Primary Room which was transformed into a comfortable dining room. The girls were dress- ed in blue skirts, trimmed with eyelet, and crisp white blouses. Popcorn, apples, and candy were sold by the Home Economic girls at all the ball games. This money was used to buy new equipment for the Home Ec- onom1cs'Room. A new Singer sewing machine was purchased for the girls. Household management was a main unit of study during the year. Many different articles of clothing were made and were shown at a style show. A May Tea for the mothers brought the year to a very successful close. AFRICULTURE While the Sophomore and Junior girls took Home Economics, the boys took Agriculture They were Dean Rechtenbach, Johnie Warrior, Leo Raasch, Leo Chafa, Leo Rechtenbach, David Campbell, Clark Cole, Max Hurd, Dick Brawdy, Delmar Williams, and Jack McDermott They studied hybrid corn and made several fleld trips to examine different types Different varieties of oats were also studied A course in farm shop was included in this class The boys made bookcases, porch swlngs, wardrobes, utility cabinets, lawn Ch8lTS, and other articles for the farm home They also made a set of backboards to be used as play ground equipment here at school The boys are hoping this new equipment will bring forth several experts at the game of basketball Smashed thumbs and small cuts were the evidences of this course but it was engoyed despite these mishaps During the last two months of school, rationing and livestock feeding were studied GLIDER During most of the second semester, the Senior Class directed by Mrs Robert Preston, tried to make this Glider a great success We went to the surrounding towns and sold 8dV6It1SlHE Then came the hard part of writing and typing articles and ads One day was devoted to picture taking 'e also worked several evenings on this project BAROMFTER On November 2 the newspaper staff was elected by the student body to wr1te articles for the Barometer section which appeared in each edltion of the Bridgewater Times during the school months A report of the varied 8CtiVit1SS and special class work was given from each class in high school and from the grades The sports column was given much space The humor columnist occasionally added 'their' bit t the news Other items as the calendar, locals, and humor were found in the Barometer tant editor Helen Carl and Myrna Cass were feature editors Leo Rechten bach and Leo Chafa were boys sports reporters and Beverly Nyllie and Sherry Clpple were glrls sports reporters music reporters were Kathryn Gipple and Davld Campbell Home vCOHOmlCS was wrltten by Phyllls Campen and Viola nh en The Church edlto s were Barbara Barnhart and Clark Cole Grades news was wrltten by Lax Hurd and Ruth Raasch The soclety news edltors were Delores Ruch and Elma Rechterbach The Humor was wrltten by Varlhm Schrader and Jack McDermott I' , f , O . . This 1S the first time Bridgewater boys ever won a Sectional Tournament ln ba ketball The boys had some trouble the flrst half but came back the second half to win At the half it was tied 25 all All of the fans ard players vere extremely happy after the game DISTRICT 'room war 'r AT HARLAN 'iota 56 March 3 Bridgewater 31 The Wiota Quintet defeated us 1n the District Tournament Although we were outscored we were not outclassed The Wiota boys were exceptionally good or making baskets while our boys couldn't seem to be able to score 'PEP' VEETIIGS If you hao ened to be go1ng by the Bridgewater High School on days of D8SK9tb3l1 games ard heard a lot of commotion in the assembly, it was only the cheerleaders, along with all the High School and Junior High getting 'hep' with a 'Pep' meetlng During the Girls Tournament the boys got together and composed a 'Skit' to entertain the g1rlS They slowed us new ways for Viola, Elma, Beverly, ard Vyrna to guard their opponerts They demonstrated to the forwards, Joy, Sherry,Kathryn,and Norma new shots they thought would help win their games The boys also gave a good demonstratlon of how Kathryn should rur down the floor The girls got together and gave a 'Sklt' for the boys during their tour narents They gave them some 'Flre' water to pep them up These 'pep' meet ings seemed to give the boys and girls the right spirit ard the games uammy worked out the way ve had them planned The cheerleaders were Barbara Barnhart from High School, Ruth Garside, and Kay Glpole, both from the Jun1or H1gh They were dressed in black balle rina skirts, white blouses w1th a black ribbon across the nont w1th B H S written in gold HEP' H P' HEP' Three cheers for our old Hlghl Voices ring' IEP' FEP' HEP!
