H, S. on September 15, 1930 had a. company of thirty-four. The colony was organized with the following officers, Governor, Frank Kiblerg Associate, Amy Miller, Secretary-Treasurer, Vera Miller. They selected Service Rather Than Famef' as their motto. They were rortunate in having Mr. Suter as honorary member and Mrs. llcenberry as advisor. The natives of the other colonies called them such names as rats and greenies but that did not discourage them. The other natives felt a little superior to them. Two members of the colony, Cleta Rhodes and Raymond Hilbert, entertained the other members at a water- melon feast. In the Spring the colony had a costume party. CHAPTER II-T1-IE coLoNY GROWS In the year 1931 immigrants from Clover Hill, Pleasant Valley, Spring Creek and Harrisonburg increased the number from thirty-four to sixty-one. New officers were elected. The officers were as follows: Governor, Grace Bowman, Associate, Louise Bloseg Secretary, Harold Chumbley. They were fortunate in having Miss Cora Click as advisor, and still holding Mr. Suter as honorary member. They were now better acquainted with the natives of the other colonies, and were beginning to be and act as superior as the other natives. One outstanding event of that year was the farmer and farmerette party. The Sophomore Colony was entertained bv the Junior Colony after having won the race of getting subscriptions for magazines in order to get more funds for the school. CHAPTER 111-THE COLONY GAINS CONFIDENCE Arriving at another day of election with the new Governor, Leon Michael, Associate Governor, Vera Miller, and Secretary-Treasurer. Ruth Alice Lequear, the colony was growing rapidly and began to gain confidence. Many important events have taken place since our last election. The colony was entertained at an outing by their honorary member, Mr, Suter, a party was held later in the year and enjoyed by all at- tending it. At one of the meetings of the general assembly, monograms were awarded to six members of the colony for their splendid work in athletics and literary events of the year. A second meeting was held by the general assembly for the awarding of the five point certificates sent out by the State Health Department at Richmond. Over two-thirds of the colonists received these certificates. The colony worked hard and played an important part in the publication of the state annual and thus ended another year with a feeling that they had helped make history. CHAPTER IV-CONFIDENCE XVON The last year and perhaps the most important period in our history opened before us and on the morning of October the second, the colony assembled together for its last year of work. Again an election was held, Governor, Elese Eye, Associate Governor, Kenneth Snyder, and Secretary-Treasurer, Mary Hutzler. A new leader was added to the colony, helping it to progress more rapidly. After the Christmas holidays, the colony was quite fortunate in securing a new home room. Assemblies were held for discussing the annual. A staff was elected in which all the members of the colonies took part. Again as in past years, our colony was outstanding in athletic events and more of the colonists received monograrns than ever before. Our social events have been enhanced by the new building and all the colonists have enjoyed it. After commencement, the colonists will depart and enter into their new step in life carrying with them pleasant memories of B. H. S. -MARIE D1zoR1cR, MARGARET PRESTON Toon. It seems but yesterday that I was back at dear old B. H. S. with that old gang of mine aud here I am in far-off Japan with an ocean and a continent between me and home. And how lonely I am! This has been positively the worst birthday I've ever had-it's not because of the age I've attained either. Oh Diary! What can I do to get over this terrible loneliness and home- sickness? May 30, 1947. Dem' Diary, I'm so happy! I have so much to record tonight that I hardly know where to begin--but here goes. As I was coming home from my work this evening, my attention was attracted by a sign which read, Prince Ali, Crystal Gazer. Now I have always considered crystal gazers fakes, but the terrible loneliness which I have experienced since coming ltere, together with an overwhelming desire to see someone from home, completely overpowered me. Before I was really aware of what I was doing, I had entered rhe prince's place of business. It took me only a moment to state my errand and in a few seconds more the prince had seated himself before the crystal with me peering eagerly over his shoulder. As the first scene unfolded, disappointment engulfed me for I recognized it to be the botanical gardens here in Yokohama. A young man was bent over a plant which he was studying intently. As I looked he straightened up, and my disappointment vanished, for I recognized the young botanist to be Willard Hill. The scene shifted to the Y. W. C. A. Hospital here and behold! Here were more of mv classmates. Charlene Phillips is head of the Y. NV. C. A., while in the hospital section I saw Ruth Alice Lequear, now a successful missionary, visiting a patient whom she had converted. Several white clad nurses that I recognized as Neva Marshall, I.el'a Click, and Cleda Hedrick were grouped about the bed, Oh Diary! No more lonely days for me! I'm going to look up those folks tomorrow. The scene moved across the Pacific to San Francisco. To my surprise I saw Elese Eye at the head of a training school for physical education directors. Several of the instructors in her school were old classmates: Roy XVill, Horace Miller, Slemp Layman, and Ray I-Iottel. Again the scene changed and I found myself watching a ball game. Who was at the bat? One of the world's greatest champions, Leon Michael. At the Hi-Hat Golf Club I saw Pauline Garber and Orville Cupp. Pauline was busily calling Fore A little Japanese boy was acting as caddy. The scene in the crystal began to change and to my surprise I found myself look- ing into the szreat Sears. Roebuck, and Co. business in Chicago. There I saw Daisie Fifer and Annie Shank, both holding excellent positions in the clothing department. I next found myself' looking into the gymnasium of one of the largest teachers colleges in New York State. There I saw Rachel Lequear giving calisthenics to several hundred college girls. In the capitol of this same state I found Charles Miller delivering an impassioned speech to the farmers on How to Bring Prosperity Back to the United States. Nagar 5,934 1 g on P wi- '. f A5 K ' 'Q BW ' ' . DA pf 'A 'J 'QL'.ifv' Now to the state of Texas. In Dallas I saw Elvert Airey in a resplendent blue uniform with brass buttons directing trafhc to the capitol. Marie Dedrick is teaching kindergarten in that city and the crystal showed her standing before a large group of children who seemed very eager for work. In St. Louis I saw a large beauty parlor wich the sign, Be-th's Salon. I found that Elizabeth Rhodes was the proprietor and she was very ably assisted by Charlotte Hawkins and Virginia Williams. They catered only to the very wealthy, ' i' In a famous hospital in this city I saw Byard Shank and Alice Wright who are doing outstanding work for such young doctors. Near the hospital in the residential section of the city, I saw a beautiful new home just ready for Esther Leatherman, who is now the devoted wife of a famous Presbyterian minister, to move into. Cleta Rhodes had done the interior decorating for the house and J. W. Cline was the architect. Things began to change and my eyes rested upon a broad-casting station in Denver, Colorado. Earl Revereomb was just closing a speech on My First Airplane Trip over the North Pole. He is now a famous pilot. When he finished, Raymond Hilbert was put on the air for fifteen minutes of popular song hits accompanied on the piano by Harold Chumbley. Wilda Sandy appeared on the scene next. She is dean of the University of Colorado. To my surprise and joy I found that Amy Miller and Lenna Huffman were teachers in the same school. The next city I looked upon was Miami, Florida. There I saw Edith Cox, who is now a millionaire's wife, in her beautiful home overlooking the ocean. Dorothy Liskey is employed as her companion. The scene changed ever so little and I saw a large ship. Hallie Miller was the owner, Roy Berry, the captain, and Nadine Atkins, hostess of the beautiful craft. Roanoke, Virginia is the scene of interest next. In beautiful modern homes on the same street I saw Vela Evers and Margaret Preston Todd hard at work on their chosen vocations-keeping house for two. Elizabeth Miller is a dress designer in that city and is drawing a fabulous salary. The next scene made my heart beat fast and brought back many tender memories of days gone by. It was our old Alma Mater-but how changed. There were now three buildings instead of one. The grounds were a marvel of landscape gardening planned, I found by our old classmate, Mary Hutzler. I was interested to note the change in the faculty. Kenneth Snyder, known to us as Hi-pocket,', was principal. Frances Whitesel was director of Home Economies, Grace Bowman, head of the music department, and Ward Huffman, teacher of American history. Louise Blose was very eapably taking care of the little tots in the first grade, who adored her. I glanced across the street to the brick bungalow where Weldon had lived when we were in high school. I was not surprised to see Vernie and Weldon, now happily married, rocking contentedly on their front porch. The last scene to unfold before me in the Crystal was Harrisonburg, now a large city of about a million inhabitants. There I saw Vera Miller, now dean of the State Tcacher's College. Wforking as secretary in her oHfice was Blanche Guyer. I Went out of the place happy at having caught this glance of my classmates and inspired 'by their successes to work harder myself. And now, diary, good-night! vy ,ns 'Stagg' na 49 nzikeflil , QQ x. ,-5 Class Will E, SIHE Senior Class of Bridgewater High School, 1934, being or sound mind and of good character, do hereby make and declare this to be our last Will and Testament. There was a large group of freshmen who were determined not to mind being called uratsv. It really wasn't half bad being called rats because we had the bright side of the future to look forward to. Mrs. Ikenberry, our advisor, gave us lots of help and encouragement. We were not as green and bashful as rats', usually are and soon we had a business meeting to get organized. Wfhen the meeting ended we had the following ofhcersz President, Robert Miller, Vice-President, Marieta Sanger, Secretary-Treasurer, Mercedes Allen. Our motto was Rowing not Drifting. Flower was Honeysuckle and colors were Blue and White. We were also very fortunate in securing Mr. Glick as honorary member. School went on just the same until one day our hearts sang for joy. The end of the second semester was at hand. School was out, we weren't rats any more. Gur sophomore year opened with a bang! and we were allowed to tease the rats. We didn't let this interfere with our work, we went on just the same 'KRowing not Drifting with Miss Cora Click as our class- advisor. We had a business meeting and elected Mary Hutzler President, I. N. Dovel Vice-President, and Ruby Huffman Secretary-Treasurer. We were well represented in both basketball and baseball.. Several boys and girls were awarded B. H. S.'s. Our boys won first place in class baseball. Were we proud of them? Juniors already! Our hopes of the future are being fulfilled. Our class officers are: President. Woodrow Landis, Vice-President, Robert Miller, Secretary, Ruby Huffmang Treasurer, Edythe Devier. Mr. Glick is our class-advisor. We are well represented in basketball. baseball. and volley ball. We are very luckv in having the manager of the baseball team. Raymond Fry, in our class. Conamencement will come and go and we will be separated for a few short summer months. onlv to return again and keen Rowing,' anxiously until we re'-eh the height of our success as seniors. EDYTHE S. He has helped us to uphold the standards of our school by his teachings of fair play and sportsmanship. Through many painstaking efforts, Miss Miller has brought her team to a very successful season. A dry remark which nearly convulsed the basketball squad certainly helped to put pep into our practice. Miss Miller surely stands for clean sports. She has put fighting spirit into every member of our team-this she puts next to good sportsmanship. Are we happy to have had her! xxff S Jes!! S ,,,'2'4 Organizations I pf e ,gp Ie' UQ!
