Although the school was originated for the children of Brethren families, all who sincerely sought knowledge were welcomed by the founder. Later, known as the Virginia Normal School, the institution graduated its second class in 1887. During the third session, the school was moved to the more convenient location in Bridgewater, Virginia. The name was changed to Bridgewater College a few years later in honor of the town. The Bridgewater football team finished the 1975 season with a disappointing 2-7 record. The team needn't rationalize its per- formance. The football team, hurt by mistakes at crucial points, played a rugged schedule, including Randolph-Macon, Shepherd, and Madison. Individually, senior C.J. DeWitt fFarmvillej led the Eagles. The 6' O 180 lb. flanker grabbed 64 passes for 836 yards, leading the nation's Division III in pass receiving 17. 1 catches per gamej. His honors include being named All-VCAA, chosen to the Kodak College Division III All-America Team Qselected by the American Football Coaches Associationj, and honorable mention on the Small College All-America Team. The ineffectiveness of the Eagles rushing attack caused them to employ the pass as their primary offensive weapon. Sophomore james Anderson gained 262.yards before spraining his ankle. Junior Steve Snarr replaced him, started the last four games and provided the rushing game with some punch as he gained 418 yards. Sopho- more Tom Wingate connected on 48. 1 percent of his passes Q86 for 179l for 1049 yards. . Defensively, standouts included senior tackle Bob Dameron, junior end Mike Stevens, sophomore linebacker john Holland, and freshman linebacker Todd Crenshaw. Stevens recovered four fum- bles and Crenshaw intercepted three passes during the season. Hol- land was an honorable mention for All-VCAA. The frustration of the entire season can be summed up by the Madison game. Trailing 10-7, the Eagles twice had the ball first and goal on the one-yard line in the fourth quarter. They were unable to score. The Hrst time Madison's defense held. The sec- ond time, Anderson plunged into the line, but didn't penetrate the goal, according to the referee anyway. The entire BC crowd disagreed with the decision. On the next play BC lost a fumble, dashing all hopes for an upset. C. 1. Dewitt doing his thing' i e .,. r fi . -X ,-f, . S. ' . . The trenches! This year the Men's varsity suffered through a tough season, experiencing many close loses. The team posted a ll-15 record, which is respectable except for the fact that the team includes 8 seniors. Tom Wright was the leading player on the squad, averaging 20 points and 15 rebounds per game. Den- nis 'Dagwood' Gibson also did an outstanding job un- der the boards. Wes Allen carried the team early in the season when they were searching for the right combination. Ricky 'Leap' Davis performed very creditably at point guard, when given the chance charging up the team in many instances with his style of play. The cagers dropped two close contests to WSLL, by 5 and 4 points respectively. In tournament play, the Eagles posted a 1-3 record, beating only EMC. They lost close games to Maryville, Towson, and Lebanon Valley. The Eagles posted a 4-9 showing in the VCAA, with 5 of those games having been lost by six or fewer points. The JV posted a 7-4 record. They played aggres- sive ball all season. Coaches Whitelow and Glick's attempts to play all members of the squad should yield results for next year's varsity. ' Leap does it! ! Al- though the faculty is the determining force for most matters, the Student Senate involves the student body in many aspects of the op- eration of the College. Thus, the Senate is the most important student organization on campus because it links the opinions and ideals of the students with those of the faculty and administration. R L H 'R - A 5 511,331 ..-f -dw' Na..- KJV A Although Bridgewater Col- lege has changed in many re- spects, the institution con- tinually strives to meet the high ideals that were estab- lished during the founding of the school in the l88O's. Many of the old buildings still exist interspersed among the newer structures. How- ever, just as the old and new architectures have established an equilibrium in the present day campus design, so too have the past and present traditions and innovations emerged as Bridgewater College as it is known today. 199 Dear Fellow Students, We would like to thank you for the support that you have given us with this years Ripples. We have enjoyed being co-editors, although at times we felt as though we could never get the Rip- ples completed! This year our country is celebrat- ing its 200 year anniversary. Keeping this in mind, we have tried to portray to you the history of Bridgewater Col- lege as it is a part of our country's his- tory. . From this, we hope that you will realize how honored and priviledged we are to be able to share in our na1:ion's Bicentennial. To you, our fellow students, we proudly present the 1976 RIPPLES. We hope that in future years when you look through this yearbook many fond mem- ories of old friends and events will be brought to mind once more. 5614141311 200 1 1 1 1 1.11 111 . , 1 1 O Q45 sig-4154, 1 1,11 114, Q11' 1 W9 ,M11.1. 1 1111111 A lf ,2',ff'3f' '91j5',.g11 1' ' 1 Hu?
