The Moline Cross divides the college seal into four equal parts. The tleur-de-lis is the crest of the family of D. C. Flory, founder of the college, and the open book symbolizes know- ledge and the fight against ignorance. The cardinal and the dog- wood branch are symbols of Virginia, and in the lower right corner is the personal seal of Alexander Mack, founder of the Church of the Brethren. The crest is topped by a two-headed eagle representing the college's athletic teams. The motto is translated beauty, goodness, truth, and harmony. The New Breed Today's college student is one of a new breed. Living in the space age has made him aware of the need for tremen- dous intellectual ability and achievement. Awareness of the rapidly shrinking world has emphasized the need to re- late to others in satisfying ways while still maintaining his own individual personality. He has lived in an age of cultural opportunities and appreciates beauty and charm. He is proud of his college and enthusiastic and spirited about its athletics. r In these ways, then, the modern collegian is different. The Bridgewater student is typically unique from the col- lege student of the past, academically, socially, culturally, and athletically. The 1968 RIPPLES pictures the chal- lenges and accomplishments of these unique students, THE NEW BREED.
