Much interest was shown in the National T.K.A. debate question for the year, 'lResolved that the foreign policy of the United States should be directed toward the estab- lishment of free trade among the nations of the world. The Speech Club was larger and more active the second semester as a result of the return of service men who had some experience and interests in forensics. Representatives of the club participated in debate tournaments between T.K.A. chapters in the state held at Natural Bridge, Virginia in December 1945 and February 1946. i .ln recent years we have not had the opportunity to meet other colleges in debate because the general trend has been toward tournament debating, however, we did have one with Lynchburg College on February 12, debating the national question. The Forensic Council approved representation for the Grand National Tournament to be sponsored at Fredericksburg by Mary Washiiigtoxi College on April 18-20. It offered opportunity for contests in debating, oratory, essay and poetry reading, response to the occasion, after-dinner, impromptu, extemporaneous and other forms of speaking. However, interest was good, and a team was developed which, though small, received acclaim for its speed and endurance. The loss of Hob Richards, who was leading the state in scoring with twenty- two points per game, was a hard blow to the team, although this loss was partially offset by a group of veterans which entered on February lirst. l The season was only mediocre in regard to l games won and lost. Our record for the season was three games won and twelve games lost. SH EETZ, Ma-:lager The notable events of the season were: Bob Rieliarfls being placed on the All-State second team. Mason, Beahm, Clague, Martin, Smith, Petchcr, Dixon The l946 season of Girls' lelasltethall was destined from the lirst to be a f'lmCllll one with nine games scheduled. The girls got off to a bad start, losing the first three games away from the home court. The team was strengthened by tlte return of Ina Mason, l-lelen jordan and Connie Dewese, players on last yearls team, now the lirst string guards. Also returning for her second year was Rennie Newton, who showed decided improve- ment and became known for her famous running one hand shots. As usual, new additions to the team were made, the majority of which were from the freshman Margaret P. Dixon Condi Sara Zigler Manrzger l l y class. The tirst string forwards were Betty Beard, Virginia Carter and Betty i .lean Garber, representatives of the freshman class. These three worked together, making a perfect trio. Carter handled the ball very well and could be depended upon for her side shots. Garber's position was under the basket as she possessed a dead eye for short shots. Beard was a versatile player, possessing the ability to play at forward equally as well as at guard. Clague, Sehlosnogle, and Beahm l shoxrecl great promise as forwards. Also deserving honorable mention are Eye, l Peteher, Mason, and Martin. who did good jobs as guards. The team worked hard and experienced a very enjoyable season under the y able leadership of Coaches Clague, Garber and Dixon. One familiar example is PRINTING. Once editor, once compositor, or press- man catches the spirit of the shop, the spell is seldom broken. Like the odor of a camp fire, or a whiff of salt air, the beloved tang of printer's ink, symboli- cal of a great profession, gets into your heart and soul. School Annuals, Magazines, Newspapers and Special Printing, all smack of it. It is an invisible link that binds all intelligence together. It is the stimulus for creation in business or romance. This craftsmanship, this devotion to service and alert- ness to business needs, has nourished and developed an eno-rmous industrial vitality, and whichever way the course of the future runs, the printer will always find himself able to adapt his helpfulness to new opportunity.
