THE STORY OF BRIDGEWATER CLASSICAL ACADEMY AND EARLIER SCHOOL HISTORY Wrthm the last srxty fxve years rn no department of our publrc and school l1fe has more marked progress been made than ln the sphere of educa t1on Srxty flve years ago our people d1d the best they could to support our publrc schools on a htgher standard reallztng the need for better burldxngs and equlpment For thrs reason our town today may be proud of our school burldlngs equrpment and well organrzed system Academres occupy a large space rn the htstory of educatton rn Massa chusetts Marne and Aroostook From the close of the Revolutlonary War to 1820 when Mame becamea state a hundred and n1nety frve towns had been mcorporated wtthrn the Provlnce of Mame by the Massachusetts Legrsla ture There were a large number of Academres establtshed under the laws of Massachusetts before Marne was admrtted to the unlon both rn the state of Massachusetts and rn the Provmce of Mame In many cases these academies were grven one half townshlps known as academy grants from whlch they sold lumber stumpage etc to help defray thelr expenses From 1791 to 1820 twenty frve academres were mcorporated tn the drstrrct of Ma1ne Between 1821 and 1891 the Mame Legrslature establlshed a great many more academles and sem1nar1es most of Wh1Ch had already been grven land grants Brldgewater was made up of two grants the southern half was granted to Portland Academy the northern half was granted to Brrdge water Academy rn Brtdgewater Massachusetts The deed provrded for 160 Srxty years ago our schools were recorded as school drstrrcts The frrst school house ln our town was at the Boundary and at one trme there were seven drstrrcts and schools as follows Boundary Corner Centre Snow Settlement Bunker H111 Montreth and West Road Th1S wrlter taught rn three of these drstrrcts namely Montleth Bunker H111 and Corner In those days teachers were pard seven dollars per week Each school had one teacher who taught all grades from the ftrst to the etghth Pnor to the constructron and openrng of our frrst regular hlgh school tn 1901 our town matntarned hrgh school terms rn drfferent d1str1cts One term would be held at the Centre School the next at the Corner etc It IS from tlus hrgh school system that the wrrter has a lugh school drploma dated May 1 1896 and srgned by Charles G Brtggs Prrncrpal At thrs ume the town felt the need for xts own hxgh school A school lot was purchased from Mr Albert Chandler and a one story burldmg was erected rn trme to begrn the frrst term of the school year tn 1901 In 1910 another story was added to this butldmg The upper story was used for the hrgh school whrle the lower was used for grades frve to elght Thrs burldlng burned rn March of 1940 A new lot was purchased a new lugh school was erected dedrcated and ready for use by March of 1941 . . . - .
