Diplomatic Poachers by David Byrd In Monticello, a small Aroostook town in Maine where 1 live, Dan Johnson and myself were discussing the possibil ities of shooting a deer Sure, It was a month before the season ocened and if we were caught, it might cost couple of hundred bucks but deer steak tastes mighty good sure tastes good That's the way we U8lK6d As if we were going after a deer just for the U of itn But there hadn't been much work that summer and we could have used a little meat at home that we didn't have to buy Dan, he's a pretty big boy, weighs about one sixty, five ten tall, fairly good looking, has brown hair, crewcut and twinkling blue eyes He has a velvet voice, and never has any trouble talking people into his way of thinking When he wanted to get a deer, all he had to say was nDave, there's a pretty good size buck hanging out on he old Jones farm 'Ne can shoot it and each ta e quarter give the rest away that's all there is to it H With our backs to the lowering san we started out for the dilapidated farm of Izah Jones, who, twenty years ago nkicked the bucket , leaving his farm to the elements was one field cut in a pine woods on the side of a big hill mud bottomed lake at the foot of the hill, covered with lilly pads and frog scum, filled with eels and leaches fthe leeches are feared in this town, everyone thinks they'll suck the blood from you if you venture into the water? There is much food in the water, thnrefore we could usually see a lot of ducks out on tae lake We stopped by the lake shore and gazed along the opp osite S136 I didn't see anyth ng, but suddenly Dan nudged me and said in a quiet whisper, ' here's a duck in the reeds, no, lt's a damm craneln Uwe couldn't sh ot it a1yway,n I sa No,' he said, It would scare the deer Leaving the lake, we cut across the field towards the top of the hill, the sun's sinking rays making our shadows long and unreal Once at t1e top we walked along the edge of the woods, being as quiet as possible, which wasn't very hard to do, as it was a pine woods, and the needles made a soft spongy carpet Dan had the rifle and was in the lead He stopped and looked intently at a clump of bushe that had grown up in the field He said in a low voice, 'Dave, I tzink there's a dcer'1n back of that small j us a - 9 t .N ' k a W . - . It ?hey named the hill after Mr. Jones. There was a shallow, 'TA 1 Q 8 A ' H .IQ ' D S L C c ump of bushes over there But too 'ate There was a snort, an explos on noise, and then stlllness The deer was gone Dan said in a disguste voice, nIt was a olg bu k n nfhat ooe must oe around here some place, let's s t down oy tue edge of the field and walt, maybe we'll get shot itn a we s t We waited Minn es seemed like hours, and all the C1 e the san was sinking lower and lower Five, Per Fifteen minutes larer we tarned our heads and froze Twenty feet away, ln the dusky light, was a deer It hadn't seen d ye , and kept walking fearlessly towards us, aw re that Dan was ready to shoot The roar of the gun made e Jump It seemed too loud it echoed and bounced over the field and across the lake and came back at us good shot, we though We cut it throat and st rted for hose, running as fast as we could It was very dark wnen we went back, and there was no citement forgot the light we were very nervous Ne pmsed the lake and turned tovaros tae tcp of the hill I heard a splash out on the water We reached the top of the hill, sat down to rest, list ening for any lurkine beast or being, and especially for Daniels, the game warden Danials was a nice guy, but if he caught us he'd certainly take us in Once we heard a heavy metallic click, as if a car door were being shut with an a empt at stealth 'Probably our ima ination, said Dan, getting up Let's get 'o work By following the edge of the field we soon found the deer, a fat doe When 1 examined lt, I discovered the hind quarter completely ruined The bullet went through her stomach and out hrough her left hind quar er tearing it so that the blood settled there, turning the meat a blue black color we had just finished taking out its entrail , fumbling in the dark, trying not to make any bad cuts in tue meat, when a bright ligh f'ashed on and Danials' low voice said, W ad some luck boys? Almost in lockstep, we jumped into the woods and ran Danials shouted, op! W to ln' now who you are anyway nHe s just trying to trick u , said D NKeep go g I was in he lead, but I tripped and fell, Dan fall ing on top of me 'hen we got up Dan was in the lead We didn' run very far, but slowed to a walk, then stopped completely After llstening a short time, we be gan to walk qule ly towards the edge of the woods We couldnft hear the warden he must have been lis ening for us to make a move, or gone deeper lnto the woods.
